    It is a crime that this has so few likes. The arrangement of a heartfelt song is spot-on. God preserve The Corries and Cyril Tawney.

    I love how they arranged and performed this. This version evokes a strong feeling of sorrow and disillusionment perfectly in tune with the lyrics. The Corries really were the masters of the folk song - brilliant.

    Cyril Tawney wrote this song from the rhythm of an engine when he was serving on submarines with the Royal Navy. The Corries version very much captures the longing a person may have to be home with his or her loved ones, but also the claustrophobia and grinding routine of a submariner's day to day life when serving their country miles away from home. Best wishes to all the sailors out there, military and maritime. Be safe and happy. Love and peace.

    Cyril Tawney once said on the Mike Harding show IIRC that the intro was meant to sound like the big diesels in the submarine. This is the only version I have heard that gives that feeling

    I've heard this song by artists all over the folk world and I've song it myself nearly everywhere. You have to remember it is about a jilted sailor who, having received a 'Dear John' letter is contemplating suicide.
    Unfortunately when I was in Gibraltar on the way home from the Far East in 1974 exactly this happened to a ship-mate of mine who did commit suicide. So this song has VERY macabre memories for me.

    I love Pentagle dearly, and Davy too, but this version I have to admit captures the mood of the lyrics best of the versions of the song I've heard.

    Cyril Tawney brought me here - I miss him. Would he like this? Maybe ... he was a highly educated musician and had room for other styles. Anybody ever see a reaction from him to this?

    @ Morse1883,
    Hi again, just left you on the Cyril Tawney page.
    The comments you make here are very valid. This is a most beautiful version of what was originally a primitive sounding song with just a nylon stung guitar as accompaniment.
    This is aristocracy to Cyril's lower deck, if you understand my meaning. Both versions have their place in sea-shantie history.
    I saw the Corries perform this a couple of times - stunning live but Cyril's was just him and his guitar.
    Thanks for posting

    • @DjNikGnashers
      @DjNikGnashers 2 месяца назад +1

      That is a strong statement, and wild claim.
      I think he had a good voice, but it wasn't even the best in Folk music, let alone best voice of all time.

    • @mariogaeta8911
      @mariogaeta8911 2 месяца назад

      @@DjNikGnashers it was an emotional statement at the time of hearing a voice that I think is one of the best. Is that ok Officer? I imagine your friends love you telling them that their opinions are wrong 😂.
      I get them confused anyway, I think Roy is the one with the beard.

    • @DjNikGnashers
      @DjNikGnashers 2 месяца назад +2

      @@mariogaeta8911 Well, if you had typed 'in my opinion Roy had the best voice of all time' that would have made sense, and not made you sound like an emotional little child who states something is the best and it must be the best because I said so ner ner ......
      I wouldn't tell any of my friends their opinion is wrong, because an opinion is just that, and we are all entitled to one.
      What I would say, is that nobody can state something sounds the best, or looks the best, because both of those things are subjective to the listener/viewer.
      I think the voice on this is great, I find it a little bit too smooth for Folk however, and personally I think Folk music needs voices with more character, even if they are not technically as perfect.
      Hence I like listening to Bert Jansch, Davey Graham, Nick Drake, Dave Evans, Jim Croce......

      @@DjNikGnashers well given that you’ve never met me, my statement was about 7 words long and was clearly stated as an opinion your response doesn’t make a huge amount of sense. And the idea that a person can’t say what sounds or looks best is absurd. You don’t need to clarify that a statement made on a subjective matter is an opinion. That’s called stating the bleedin’ obvious! 😂 I gave you a thumbs up because you clarified your opinion later on in the message, but do you not see the irony of taking such offence at someone’s opinion that you tell them that their opinion is wrong? You do realise that you were literally using your opinion to tell me that my opinion was wrong.

      Please accept my apologies.
      It was a bit tongue in cheek, and meant to be banter, please don't take offense.
      You stated 'Roy had maybe the best voice of all time', and it just sounded a bit like a statement instead of an opinion, that was all.
      Peace.

    I have a completely off the wall thought about this: what about a Status Quo version!
    Hmm, seems to be in a key 'between the cracks' of B and B flat... of course, if your band contains instruments which can be tuned easily (unlike, say, piano) that's not a problem...
