“A Car Is Born” is a 1972 Ford Motor Company promotional film that shows how the modern automotive assembly line produces a precision machine. It contains shots of 1972 Mach 1 Mustangs and Torinos as well as designs (shown in clay model form) for the 1974 Mustang II.
The film begins with a literal bang - a massive explosion of earth followed by scenes from construction sites and factories. Molten metal drips from containers while the scenes are interspersed with clips of car owners explaining what they look for in an automobile. “Where does a customer’s new car begin?,” asks the narrator at mark 02:26. “It begins in the minds of people - our first resource.” It also begins in auto manufacturer’s scientific research laboratories - with a montage of scenes flashing on the screen as the narrator explains how those settings serve as “gateway to the unknown” - as well as in factories and through the use of machines. We learn of the electrocoat paint process as a car is shown being dipped into a solution at mark 04:32, as well as an experimental “powered paint process.” A discussion of safety protocols soon follows with scenes of a salvage yard mixed with cars in factories being smashed in the interest of safety. Yet is is “people who make the system work,” says the narrator at mark 06:18, and we see a variety of scenes of factory workers going about their daily routines. Performance and design are always key areas of improvement in Ford automobiles, the narrator explains come mark 07:55, with engineers always taking customer concerns into consideration when designing and redesigning their product. The film takes its viewer into the design center at mark 08:28 to see the idea in action, from seats to AM radios to electric windows. Design and engineering draw closer together by mark 12:52 as a new vehicle is shown being constructed using both machine-made and man-made parts. There are scenes from test tracks and a series of manufacturing images. We watch as the vehicles rolls down an assembly line until at mark 24:52 as “the car has come to life.”

It's actually a Late 1972 Video if you date all the cars and look at all the clay Models. It is NOT a 1960's Video. There are a bunch of 1972 Mach 1 Mustangs on one of the factory lots.. Some of the Clay Models at the Design Studio were 1974 Mustang II's in Clay Molds. This makes sense since Ford was usually two years ahead at the Ford Design Studio. It IS a Late 1972 dated Film. :o) Tony K. MCA#70001.

This should be retitled, as it's definitely not the 1960's. The newest cars on the roadways here are 1972 model year. The clay and first edition (in creation) cars are 1973 models. The time of the filming must be 1972.

Um. I think I saw this when I was in elementary school in the 70s. We had Movie Day on Friday's. They showed these promotional films a good bit. Always loved these types of educational films.

Back when cars were mostly ordered and purchased, You got a LOT more variety. Today most people lease whatever is in stock. This leads to "mass market" (read that as BORING) sameness in paint, trim and interiors.

My father worked and retired from the Ford plant in St paul minnesota started mid 1960s. Told me his finger got attached to a seat frame by means of a metal ring to hold the fabric to the seat frame ...said he had to walk with the seat until someone cut the ring ...I work at ford today... be a massive safety investigation in that issue...

Did you see all those idiot lights on the dashboard of that Ford LTD? After 10 miles or so, more than half of the light bulbs that illuminate those idiot lights will burn out. So when an engine or electric problem comes up, the idiot lights won't light up and warn you that you've got real serious problems with your car.

  • @rickprusak9326

Did anybody tell these car builders to make a car that doesn't stop running on a nice and sunny day? Did anyone tell these auto engineers to build a car that doesn't have multiple recalls on them before and right after you buy them?
Doesn't the auto company engineers ask if customers want vehicles that don't start rusting as it goes down the assembly line?
Car companies make their vehicles cheaper and cheaper but charge multiple thousands of dollars for crap on 4 wheels 🛞. A car is born and dies in your driveway or on the street in front of your house.
