Leaders of the Sahel Alliance meet in Niger after leaving ECOWAS

West African leaders are currently grappling with the decision by the military rulers of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, to form the Sahel Alliance States or Confederation of Sahel States. The leaders of these three countries, which had earlier this year cut ties with the Economic Community of West Africa - ECOWAS - following military coups, met in Niger, while ECOWAS held a meeting in Nigeria.
