- During the summer of 1993, between the end of Late Night and the beginning of Late Show, Paul Shaffer released his second CD, "The World's Most Dangerous Party." To promote it, he appeared on "Later with Bob Costas," which aired on August 19, and then on "ABC In Concert," broadcast two days later. Both are included here. At the end is an ad for the CD.
In one "Later" segment, Paul is self-critical when discussing Dizzy Gillespie's Late Night appearance from October 2, 1984. That performance ("Frelimo") is included here.

This series of interviews by Costas were great. I watched it every night.
Same. I wish that he still had that show. When it comes to engaging interviews, he still has no peer.
Dave summed up Paul perfectly, I thought. He said, Paul Shaffer loves show business in the way show business was meant to be loved. And boy does it show here. Paul's recalling of being a 12 year old kid in Vegas, with his parents, and deciding that LATER IS HIPPER has stayed with him his entire life. He's as hip as they come, and a true musical genius.
Costas is a very underrated interviewer. He asks the questions that capture the persons enthusiasm and reveal who they really are.
So true. I got excited when ever he interviewed some one I liked because of the way he interviews.
Bob is the best, in the biz. This was a tremendous interview. It's one of my favorite one's Costas did on Later, along with his interviews of Mickey Mantle, Paul McCartney, Audrey Meadows, etc. His technique, insights, and enthusiasm are unmatched, in the format. Imho.
You could say that, but he has ppl research for him. Costas once interviewed Benny Goodman but that was a disaster. Its either the people he works with and/or him who employs the idea of a research staff.
He's the best since Cavett, maybe better.
Underrated compared to who? Bob Costas has been one of the top interviewers both in sports, and in the general world for the past 40 years. And most people that are aware of Bob Costas know that. He is far from underrated.
Don Giller, this is great entertainment!!! You get the Nobel RUclips prize. Thank YOU Sir!
Amazing that Our youth have not found Paul yet, but they will. Paul was and is the quintessential performer. I loved how Paul got so into the music. His boyishness enthusiasm was beyond reproach. Thank You
Top notch interview. Dizzy Gillespie was fantastic.
This great!
You can't beat Shaffer and his musicality!
Thank you again Sir Don! For taping and sharing this masterpiece that ran into the ether in 93 and gives the doubters a reason why comedy nerds and Dave fans know why the Shaffmeister is a genius and the perfect and hippest sidekick for Dave. Nice touch of adding the whole Dizzy Gillespie performance to the post. Don Giller for President!
Thanks! Though I’ll stick with civilian life. :)
i'm switched over to letterman many times because of the musical guest, clearly the best late night band of all time.
This is a great interview.
This is music nerd heaven. Bob did a great and insightful interview that actually dug a bit deeper than I would have thought. And it is so cool to see the band play the songs all the way through. And on ABC of all places.
Paul, your grandmother, grandfather, father, Cecil and Samuel were my neibours in Fort William. Saw your beautiful mother give carriage rides for you up and down marks street. Cecil was my dentist. All great friends. Ever, Lois Bowles.
da fuq?
This is absolute gold. Thank you so very, very much for all that you post.
Thanks! Preparing something now from the same period but a lot longer.
Always like Paul for his talent and strangeness , class act.
Amazing that the only full length performance they showed was the one Paul said he was least proud of, with Dizzy Gillespie.
That wasn’t aired on Later. Don just spliced it in here for reference.
Speaking of that clip, I wonder why David walked over there and interviewed Dizzy standing up. It looked like the crew wasn’t ready for that.
I forgot Steve Jordan was still there for awhile after Hiram left.
I remember sneaking into the TV room at 2am to watch this when it first aired on TV :)
Love these old Later shows. Thanks for posting this one with Paul up.
Thanks; will be putting up more as I continue to digitize them.
This was an excellent show. The ultimate lineup was when NBC had Carson, Letterman, then Costas.
Don Giller Don, do you have the Later when Mick Fleetwood was on?
Don you are the best. Been looking for the full version of this for a long time. Easily the best Shaffer interview ever, as were many of Costas's interviews. That hour and half every night of Late Night/Later might be the best TV of all time and changed my life.
I agree; I taped a lot of the Costas shows and am digitizing them as well as the Late Nights.
have you read paul shaffers book Don?
I have and have quoted it when pertinent in a couple of uploads:

Paul Shaffer's first live-mic on Late Night, February 1982 -- ruclips.net/video/JY5hwPkdOvc/видео.html
thanks for the links don!
Don!
did you see norm MAC donald's new interview with dave?
This interview is fascinating. I love the stories about performing with James Brown and Bruce Springsteen. Paul thought that he and the band did not do well with Dizzy Gillespie, but Dizzy said they were just fine. Paul is one of my favorite Canadians, along with Martin Short and the guys from Rush.
Yes, I though that Paul and his band sounded crackling backing Dizzy. Like many accomplished artists, I think Paul is his own harshest critic. Great show!
Thank you thank you thank you
Paul is the real deal.
Even when he's "faking it"?
I’ve always like Paul . Nice interview!
@Don Giller
Priceless! thank you Don👋👋👋
I love Paul. What a career he's had. Springsteen however, is a goof. Always laughing at his own jokes that only he finds funny. I can't even watch him when he's being interviewed.
Get off my organ ya doof!!!
Great episode! I am still on the search for the Later episode with Pat Cooper- amazing stuff
December 28, 1992. I have it but haven’t digitized it yet.
@@dongiller Yes, please. 👍
$26.99 in 1993 for that double CD. Wow! 30 years ago!
Once again Don Giller, you are Da Man! I only wish you had the same interest in the original Colbert Report and original Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Thanks once again.
I have nearly all of those shows.
The laugh track is priceless
i loved Paul's reactions to chris Elliot on letterman
this was awesome.
Dizzy Gillespie!! What a classy, classy person!!! :) 18:45
I wish I had a better-quality video source for his performance. Maybe someday.
@@dongiller Rest assured you taught me about Dizzy today. I only knew him as a name, the unique trumpet and his legend. I'm actually sitting in Charlotte, North Carolina as I write this and plan to drive over to his hometown (which he mentioned during his interview with Letterman). I did not know he was from Cheraw.

Any idea why Dave didn't bring Dizzy to the desk?
Could you upload the Dizzy Gillespie performance as a seperate video?
I’d rather first wait for a better-quality video to come along. In the meantime, you can always download the video, then extract the performance from that.
Coral Gables 🌴🇺🇸 I went to school with Tom King and the Starfires AKA OUTSIDERS ! 🏄
Great stuff! What song does the band play with Dizzy?
“Frelimo at Tango.”
I should check out eBay for the album.
When did Later get a live audience?
29:13 is that actually Phil Beuth, or Elmer Gorry?
Phil.
Where was Will Lee on the final Late Night program?
Will was touring with Sadao Watanabe in Japan. He hated missing the last week of the show.
It’s a great interview, but he doesn’t ask Shaffer how he managed to pull off making all those Vegas, showbiz music references so campy and tongue in cheek while not being condescending.
And what about the spelling of his last name?
That in itself is pretty unique.
The audience is such a distraction here. Differences in shooting styles 30 years on.
Artie Fufkin, Polymer Records.
“Kick this @ss for a man!”
I was hoping that Costas might reference This is Spinal Tap and Arty Fufkin. Shaffer, in addition to his musical versatility, was a solid comedic actor. He frequently 'turns it up to eleven'.
