  • In this video I discuss the environmental aspect of filament and propose a rating you can use to decide how environmentally friendly your filament is.
    The rating looks at both the spool your filament is on, and the composition of the filament itself. The combined rating produces a value with a maximum of 6*.
    Spool Rating:
    0pts - Black Plastic Spool
    1pt - Clear/White Plastic Spool
    2pts - Cardboard Spool
    3pts - Masterspool Refill (no spool at all!)
    Filament Rating:
    0pts - Oil Based Virgin Polymer.
    +1pt - Plant Based / Biodegradable (e.g PLA).
    +1pt - Contains recycled material.
    +1pt - Fully recycled material.
    +* - Recycled material is from post consumer waste.

    I've been just thinking about setting up rules for myself. I am kinda new to FDM 3D printing and want to be a bit more consious about the materials I use. I quicky decided to go with PLA whenever I can, and found FormFutura's rPLA, recycling pre-consumer waste, on cardboard spool and cardboard packaging. I honestly don't see any problem with it when printing. I'm glad I found your video, it'll help me rank/choose more easily.

    Great point!!! The spools. The only thing is Callum, PLA is not biodegradable unless it meets very specific conditions. It has to be constant temp, in a special type of plant, with certain micro organisms. Very few plants do this. If you leave a benchy. in the forest for 10 years it will still be there....

    Kudos!, EVERYONE should be this conscientious about the planet and how they act on it, especially makers.
    I pray you become mega successful!
    Going to buy my first 3D printer (Flsun Deltas look best so far), really ready for a building material that if it gets lost in the natural world it won't damage land, air, water or wildlife, even the fact that holding rainwater makes it stagnant is what concerns me about FDM/FFF printing waste, yet I need to make prototypes of concepts.

      Thank you for watching and for your comments, much appreciated! I hope you had a good Christmas:)
      Good luck with the new printer, let me know how you get on. I have never actually tried a Delta, but know many people love them for their speed and quality results.
      You'll see the previous comment asked about compostable filament and I pointed them in the direction of GrowLay filament which looks interesting, maybe that will be useful for your project too. In the future, I hope to produce bio alternatives to all the commonly printed materials (PETG, ABS, TPU, etc), so appreciate your good luck wishes.

    Thanks, I didn't realize the ecological impact of the spool

      Yes it's easy to overlook, but certainly plays a big part. If you think just in terms of your own impact everything seems quite small, but when you look at an industry as a whole with thousand of users even small changes really add up. Thank you for watching the video :)

    Recycling from pet bottles is unfortuate, as pet bottles are already part of a closed system that can be recycled almost indefinitely... though this video is great overall! Very nice and informative

    Thank you for the CaptEco and growlay leads ✔️ and this video.
    If you have never heard the "Mr Fusion" reference in the comedy movies Back to the Future(before your time), you should, you might find it relevant and/or funny.

      Unfortunately CaptEco aren't operating anymore, but we still have our waste recycled in similar ways. You might like to take a look at the Precious Plastics movement, I am sure you will have a local group

    @Callum Coles, Subbed✔️
    Also don't know if you get Chia Pet in the UK, it got me to laugh and think about a plant food source as a printing material, and then if you wish to keep the model longer you can dip and seal/harden/smooth the surfaces, otherwise push seeds into it, and then place it in the ground.

    • @CallumColes
      @CallumColes  3 года назад +1

      I've not heard of Chia Pet, but will have a search, thank you! On the subject of search, rather than google you might like to consider switching to Ecosia, they're a not for profit search engine that use ad revenue to plant trees rather than fill their pockets!

    Hey! Awesome video! As you know pla is only recyclable under certain conditions , do you know of any 3d printing material that is completly 100% biodegradable? I mean like no machines or special conditions, just degrades after a while outside
    Thx!

    • @CallumColes
      @CallumColes  3 года назад +3

      Thank you for the comment! As far as I am aware, the only filament that comes close so far is the experimental GrowLay filament, which is advertised as compostable. If you’re in the UK, we’re launching a filament recycling program soon, to turn print waste/supports back into usable products (3DTomorrow). This will hopefully provide a good alternative to throwing these bits away!

      PHA but its still not as wide spread as PLA. full PHA is about £40 per spool atm

      I guess one could just print in PVA and then make casts of it.

    Very nice video with a helpful scale. Do you know of any 6*-Filament? The closest I got was Reflow filament: Post-Consumer PLA on a Cardboard Spool. Unfortunately, they have no Refill-System and a limited color selection

    • @CallumColes
      @CallumColes  3 года назад

      Thanks! It was my attempt to simplify the environmental aspect so more users can make informed decisions.
      For 6* I only know of Fishy Filaments, they make a recycled nylon for use with Masterspool. It’s not an easy thing to make recycled filament from post consumer waste!

    Black recycled HIPS spools have 85% smaller carbon footprint than clear spools and 20% smaller than cardboard spools. Black plastics, while they cannot be recycled, they can be burned for energy and do not go to landfills, at least where i live. If they are thrown to landfills in UK, thats the fault of UK, not the fault of the plastic.
    PLA is not biodegradable except if you put it in industrial compost for like 6+ months. No one will do this really, so in practise it is not biodegradable, even tho theoretically it is.

    • @CallumColes
      @CallumColes  2 года назад

      Firstly, where have you got those stats from out of interest?
      The problem with the black plastic is the end of life treatment, even if they are to be burned for energy, that process further increases the carbon footprint and naturally is not a circular process. Cardboard spools on the other hand can be locally recycled in most areas.

      All are unfortunately, it’s a necessary evil to prevent moisture degrading the material.
      My company uses vacuum bags that double up as a reusable grip seal bag for on going storage or reuse in other ways🙌🏼
