Moving from New Zealand to Pakistan!? - PROLOGUE

  • In 2018 my family and I moved to Pakistan after living in New Zealand all our lives. For the purpose of context, we’ve never lived in Pakistan before. My mum’s Russian and my dad’s Pakistani however they both left their home countries early on and travelled around the world which eventually lead to the birth and growth of our family in New Zealand. New Zealand is our home and happy place so my dad’s impulsive decision to pick up and migrate to Pakistan last year was one that no one but him was in favour for. Whilst most people desperately look for any way out of Pakistan our family worked in reverse, leaving everything we knew and loved behind for Pakistan. Saying this move was extremely difficult would be an understatement but if theres one thing I learned its that all things, good or bad, happen for a reason. I've decided to share my story and experiences with an honest perspective whether it’s to help anyone out who might be going through something similar or to simply provide an insight into this story which happens to be my life.

yall are being so judgemental for whattt. She's comparing Karachi to Auckland because she MOVED. A foreigner is not gonna view your counry the same way you do. I was born and raised in new york and visit Karachi every year. But MOVING from a country like New Zealand or the US to Pakistan is a VERY massive change. If I was her I'd be crying and complaining 24/7.

True !! syeda Kamal if you just visit Pakistan on vacation you come in different mind set , but you are moved from good then it's TRUE you complain 24-7, like me I came from USA after spending 28 years and I am on a project have to spend 2 years then go back to USA it's looks new word I am not talking about cleanliness I am just talking about system and specially language becuse pakistan still follow British system and american system is totally different I having so much difficulty in bank transaction buying cars you got confuse with currency million rupees vs million dollars etc etc some time and when you go to elite restaurant you have to act like lord or very sophisticated person means you can't touch food with your hands always use fork knife and napkins. If you are coming from america if you ask for napkins they dont get it. So now I am learning I have to say "tissue ". And plus when you are in line buying something from fast food restaurants even in posh area like defence people are standing that close that there front is touching your back.Plus too much show off if you elite you speak English and person who is middle class doesn't speak English or if someone speak incorrect, but I found Mistakes of elite people who speaks english they most of the time use wrong grammar, and in one minute conversation they use " you know" 15 times.

I moved to Karachi from Abu Dhabi (UAE). I cried for years and years!.. I was born there, I use to think that United Emirates is my country LOL. Shifting was painful.
My dad once told me "Look, son! wherever you go, People will call you a Pakistani. Pakistan is your identity, you can't run away from it" many of the nations that are now called "Developed nations" were once like Pakistan. "Under developing" with bad infrastructure and no rule of law. They changed with the passage of time, and Pakistan will also change one day and you will be proud of it.
"But it wouldn't change until we stop running from it, and start to change it".
I'm now in love with my "Identity". things are messed up, That's true. But i in my capacity will work for the betterment of my country ♥ :)

As someone born and raised in the US, I totally see where she’s coming from. To someone who’s never been to Pakistan, it truly feels like you’re in a whole new world once you set foot there. It makes sense for her to have a negative perception about Pakistan because all she has ever known and loved is New Zealand. I think it’s not fair that you compare a whole country with some areas of Just a city Pakistan has much more to offer sure there are areas where infrastructure is not the best but it’s not fair to compare only those areas with a whole country. And as for the natural beauty go pack your bag and go on a road trip across Pakistan. Pakistan has every landscape that u can think of including mountains jungle valley desert farm land coastal areas and I’m not talking about just Karachi’s beach There are whole lot of beaches beside the Karachi beach and when you compare Karachi’s beach with New Zealand’s beaches keep in mind that Karachi’s beach is the most famous and easy to get to beach in Pakistan and all of Karachi’s Citizens which are roughly 14.91 million come to this beach to enjoy and if u compare it to New Zealand that has the total population of roughly 5 million there are roughly 5 million people living whole in New Zealand while in just Karachi there are roughly 15 million citizens and Karachi alone has people 3 times the population of New Zealand land so in the end I want to say that u haven’t Explored all of Pakistan yet so Pack your bag and go on a trip across Pakistan :)

Every city has slums it’s not fair to portray them as the whole city it’s not Our fault if she doesn’t want to explore the whole Karachi. Everyone can Easily live in Karachi It doesn’t matter if U are poor/middle class/Rich or Elite. I moved from UAE to Karachi theJuly of last year. Although I am originally from Pakistan, I was born, and raised in UAE. I used to come to Pakistan for holidays, but never dreamt of living here. Moving here was a quite a hard adjustment to make honestly. Schools, Beaches, Malls, houses, everything basically was so different. I was so used to meeting people from all around the world, and here I only see Pakistanis. The education is quite hard too. I was excited, yet terrified of moving to Karachi. It's almost going to be year, but I still have new experiences everyday. The water, diary products, etc are all so different in taste, but thank God it's getting better. I really loved how you showed a completely different side of Pakistan, which many fail to see. Pakistan is labelled using certain words, and people don't get out of this frame. Pakistan has it's own beauty, that is exquisite and can't be compared to any other country's beauty, no matter how beautiful that country is. Thank you for sharing this journey! I can personally relate a lot.

She is not trying to portray Pakistan as a bad country, she’s just explaining how she felt through the whole process. Pakistan definitely has beautiful areas and is not anything like what the media portrays it to be, however any normal person knows that New Zealand is a much more developed country than Pakistan therefore the move would be hard for any person.

Problems are only there for the poor. If you are rich in Pakistan the lifestyle that you can afford here is not thinkable for ex-pats.No one in foreign countries can think of hiring maids, drivers and security guards. You can afford to live in the much better locality, housing societies. Also, you can afford much more luxurious cars, houses etc here. If you got money in your pockets life here is much better. Majority of people with privileged backgrounds visit foreign countries but don't settle there because the lifestyle and protocol they get here is not possible abroad. But sadly that's not the case for the majority of people.

As someone who’s ethnically Pakistani but was born and lived abroad (London) all my life I really can’t imagine having to leave everything and moving to Pakistan. I do try and visit as often as possible (almost every year) and usually only stay at Lahore. I actually enjoy going there it helps me stay connected to my roots and origin as we’re 4th generation in UK now. The visit can be really bitter sweet because when I get there, there are moments I just want to leave and moments where I wish I could stay longer. But nonetheless Pakistan is still home and it does give a sense of belonging I suppose. But it really must be hard for you considering you’re mixed race to be thrown into just one half of your origin that over powers the other. But who knows there’s must be a reason your dad moved out in the first place whose to say he won’t feel the same way again later on.
