  • Our three co-hosts are stuck in the multiverse and need to get back to their home universe. Clearly, the only way to do that is to explore our cultural obsession with multiverses, alternate timelines and parallel worlds, and tie it all into a conversation about post-modern art, pop culture, and the lessons these stories teach us. Also, each episode, one of them is an asshole who will probably sabotage the whole thing.
Boy Howdy! This week we discuss 2001’s The One. Michael and Abe contemplate how they didn’t figure out how Adam says “Boy Howdy!” constantly throughout this one.

Jet Li and Jackie Chan’s on screen styles have always been very different. While Jet Li will use longer takes he typically doesn’t go wide for very long.
But Jet Li and Jackie Chan weren’t the only ones to move over to Hollywood from Hong Kong in the late 90s. After the Hong Kong handover in 1997 the film industry declined. John Woo, Michelle Yeoh, Yuen Woo-Ping, Chow Yun Fat, Sammo Hung, and more all came over. And they all brought their stunt teams.

Jet Li has always been light hearted about all his movies, as far as I remember. Somewhere there's an old X-Play interview of him talking about his PS2 game and laughing about how he can only fight one person at a time even when he's surrounded by bad guys. He describes it as them taking a "mid-fight noodle break" until it's their turn to get smacked around.

One “saving grace” of this movie for me is that final fight. It is a beautiful exercise in character and storytelling in fighting style and fight choreography.
The evil Jet Li using a closed fist, offensive striking style. While good Jet Li uses the open palm, defensive, flowing style. Two beautiful displays of Kung Fu that perfectly define the characters and their motivations.
They went to the effort of making each character dress differently so as to differentiate them. But the choreography is so beautifully done that they could be dress the exact same and you’d still be able to tell them apart.

I love when people who are most often the protag/hero have opportunity to play the villain. You know he was having fun.

I think Seth is an alternative name for the god Set.

The "slow punch speed up" thing goes back to the 40s. I'm having a hard time remembering the details but I've seen it in old black & white movies.

    It's really closer to string-theory than multi-verse.

Hah, just re-watched this a few days ago. Always a fun and silly ride.
Reminder: In the Multi-verse the verse where Gore gets elected is the violent one. What a goof.

It's not just a "martial arts" movie it's a "superpowered martial artists" movie, so the cg makes sense

They finally touch on something I always thought when people would complain that John Connor looks different between each movie. They are all John Connor because that is the baby that Sarah has, but the sperms were all different.

I think it makes sense if Jet Li is the only person or one of a few who have so many copies throughout the multiverse.

You guys should do the Jimmy Neutron Fairly Odd Parents crossover movie trilogy. Make it a Shooting Threes crossover.
