  • Homebody - Game Review
Hey, welcome back to the "Veteran Game" RUclips channel! I'm your horror-obsessed host who enjoys nothing more than a good, terrifying piece of media that I can dissect in all its fearful glory. And today, we're diving into a spooky gem that’s caught my attention: Homebody.
Created in the unlikely setting of the Game Grumps office, Homebody is a psychological horror game that has frankly exceeded my expectations. Jory Griffis, known for his narrative contributions to the popular Dream Daddy dating sim, seems to be the creative mastermind behind this project. And let me tell you, his touch has left a mark.
So what is Homebody? Well, imagine this: you're part of a group of friends trapped in an old house with a killer, suspense thickening in the air. You play as Emily, a young artist grappling with anxiety and paranoia, struggling to reconnect with estranged friends who have begun to drift apart since she left home. The narrative weaves a chilling tale of one horrifying night, suffused with profound emotional and psychological undertones.
Homebody opens with Emily battling an anxiety attack as she’s late for a reunion with her friends. The fear of disappointing her friends nearly convinces her to turn around, but she musters up the courage and heads to their meeting place, albeit late. Emily's psychological battles are a pivotal part of her character and contribute to the growing tension amongst the group.
A few hours into the game, the power cuts out, and chaos ensues as a killer breaks loose from the locked attic. Friends perish one by one, including Emily herself. But this isn't the end. Instead, Emily wakes up, and you, as the player, are thrust into a Groundhog Day-like scenario. Forced to relive the same bloody night, you must use your accumulated knowledge from each restart to try and find an escape before the cycle repeats itself.
This time-loop mechanic adds an intriguing dimension to both the narrative and gameplay, challenging you to solve the same puzzles within a tight time frame. The mystery intensifies as Emily’s attempts to talk about the recurring events are mysteriously altered, and the veil of oblivion around her friends starts to show signs of wear.
Homebody doesn’t just stop at a strong premise; it keeps you on the edge of your seat with countless twists and turns as you try to escape the cursed house. The gameplay is a simple point-and-click puzzle style, interjected with compelling narrative pieces that keep you engaged. The characters are likable and well-rounded, and much like them, the game has a lot more going on beneath the surface than meets the eye.
In conclusion, Homebody is a brilliant piece of psychological horror that will linger in your mind long after you've put the game down. With a narrative as unpredictable as it is fascinating, you'll find yourself glued to the screen, trying to unravel the mystery behind this strange house and the friends within. So if you're a fan of games that get your heart racing and your mind whirling, Homebody is one you shouldn't miss.
