Plymouth Hoe and Mayflower 400, on the trail of the Pilgrim Fathers, CWT Visit Devon!!!

- In our video we explore Plymouth Hoe, discovering some highlights: which 'Beatle Bum' would you choose? and why is it called the 'wedding cake'? Watch to find out what we are talking about!
After exploring the Hoe, we make our way down to the Barbican. The Barbican is rich in history and buildings that the Pilgrims would have seen when they visited Plymouth in 1620. Of course it would have looked very different to them! Then it was a busy port with goods and people arriving and leaving. Today it is a modern marina with cafes, shops and the National Marine Aquarium.
This year Plymouth is celebrating Mayflower 400. The 6th September 2020 is the 400 year anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower, carrying 102 passengers to the New World to set up a colony. Join us as we uncover interesting historical buildings and facts about Plymouth at the time of the Pilgrims.

Morning Andrew and Sarah I would like to thank you both very much for doing lovely vlogs of Cornwall and Devon and mainly for cheering me up love to you both Martin West Yorkshire
As a American thank you for sharing a piece of American history. My family history traces are arrival to America after the war of 1812. Sadly here in America there are people in this country that wishes to wipe out all traces of our heritage. Thanks to the people of Plymouth that they are preserving that small piece of History of America's beginning.
Oh gateaux way with you Andrew! I love Plymouth, have some very fond memories there. Lovely video guys.
As an American with ancestors who ventured over during William Penn’s time this was fascinating. Not sure from which port my ancestors left England but I think some of then stopped in Ireland where an Englishman married an Irish lass and than moved on to Pennsylvania. Your ending comment about returning to the Shire had me laughing! I love the Hobbits.
Thanks for your lovely comment! It's great to hear family stories tracing back to this era. And of course, like a hobbit, we get two breakfasts!! Sarah :)
This was wonderful! On my first trip to England in 1998 I flew into Paddington and took a train to Plymouth. My goal was to get to St. Ives, but couldn't get there in one day. I stayed in a row of newer townhouses that had replaced the ones destroyed in the bombings. I walked a bit in Plymouth when I got there, and popped into a small museum about the town history. I promptly fell asleep in a room with a video presentation. When I emerged (surprised!), I watched a bike race going through town, and saw a huge waterfront pool, and the park you showed at the top of the hill. So...I didn't see much before going back to my B&B and crashing. I missed so much - it was so fun to see all the historical buildings you showed here!
What a great story! I guess that was the jet lag, or maybe a hearty lunch! We never knew there was so much to see in Plymouth and had a great day discovering it all. Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrails very jet lagged. Flew in from west coast US (Washington State, Seattle area)
Some clever flying into Paddington
😅
Thank you, Sarah and Andrew for another great video! I loved going with you as you explored all the little back streets of Plymouth. Meeting Malcolm was very serendipitous!! Such beautiful old buildings. And that cobblestoned wharf..... amazing! Thanks for taking us along on your walking tour!
Bettina from Connecticut
Our pleasure! Yes, Malcolm was amazing, very knowledgeable. We are trying to contact him to say thank You, we will keep trying! Sarah :) Sarah
You two are adorable! I’m a native of California, but a descendant of Mayflower voyager John Howland. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed your tour of Plymouth. I watched this two days before our American Thanksgiving celebration in 2020...while I was making my pumpkin pie , to be exact. I can’t wait to see more of your videos! Keep up the wonderful work!!!
Wow, thank you! Sarah :)
I love old buildings! Wish I could see inside. I’m a history fanatic.
It sounds like this video was just right for you! Plymouth is full of history, just a pity that we were not able to go in the Merchant's House. Sarah :)
The actual embarkation point for the travellers on the Mayflower was behind the Admiral McBride pub across the road from the Mayflower steps - there was no pier, steps or pub in 1620 ! The best view is from the Ladies loo at the aforementioned pub - honestly !!
Brilliant comment! Andrew asks "How has he been in the ladies' loo!?!" A new video - views from pub loos in Plymouth!!! Sarah :)
Thanks for showing us Plymouth, interesting history, stepping back in time looking at some of those amazingly old houses and yes so lucky they were not destroyed by the blitz.
Glad you enjoyed it, we had a great day discovering the old houses! Sarah :)
I was worried one of you would get a nosebleed by leaving ‘the shire’ 😉. What a beautiful place Plymouth is and the historical buildings are stunning. X
😁We had a great time, I want to go back and do the Gin tour! Sarah :)
Cornish Walking Trails Sarah, I don’t think you should take Andrew on a Gin tour, it would be much more fun if we did that one together 🍸 😂 x
Absolutely fascinating video!...and what incredibly beautiful historic buildings...I had no idea they still existed. Thank you also for remembering those brave souls who set sail for the Americas 400 yrs ago into very much unchartered territory. I hope Plymouth will be having some worthy commemorative celebrations on 16th September.
Yes, so do I! I think there was a budget set aside called Mayflower 400, they have refurbished the steps in anticipation of some US visitors, they look amazing but COVID might have impacted the hoped for tourism. When we visited the trail was about to be printed and the app nearly ready, again delayed by COVID. Hopefully they will have a fund for fireworks or something...Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrails Thanks for the info Sarah. Fireworks would be fantastic! I'm also hoping Royal Mail will release some commemorative stamps .
I left Plymouth after 42 years of living there for Cornwall and never looked back. X
Perfect! Jam first!! He! He! Sarah :)
Thank you for this wonderful video! ❤️🌞
Love your videos.cornwall is such a beautiful place thank you for sharing xx
Thanks for watching! Sarah :)
Another lovely video...
Thanks for venturing out of the Shire and hope you made it back safely to Hobbiton x

Thanks, We had a lot of fun! Sarah :)
Well we really enjoyed your trip into England.....ha ha!! The rich history of Plymouth and the wonderful Barbican area of this City just over the border from Cornwall was a good choice. As for the ‘Wedding Cake’ I vow to return one day and again it really was a ‘slice’ of history.’ Dah Dah!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Sarah :)
We are moving to Cornwall soon and we are really looking forward to going on some of your walks. Thank you for the inspiration
I hope it goes well for you! Sarah :)
Really enjoyable. I loved the beautiful old buildings and great it's being restored. As for the cake I think you were both the cherry on the top 😄
Ahhh! That's so sweet! Thank you!! Sarah :)
The actual steps are underneath the loo in the pub directly behind the steps. As local lore would have you believe.
This sounds interesting, a couple of comments saying the same thing, I wonder if there is any evidence?!? Sarah :)
Super interesting diversion - such an old place. My half-sister is a Mayflower descendant, descending from William Brewster. I'm a Jamestown descendant x2, from Anglicans seeking their fortunes in the new colony. I really, really enjoyed this. Thanks so much! Learned lots :)
Oh wow! I love hearing the stories about the settlers in the new colony, always try to imagine their bravery. I don't think I could take such a risk! Sarah :)
Yes interesting times, and yes they were brave - most of them died. But you guys have the most interesting history. I've been studying it for years now - can never get enough :)
Love receiving your comments, using Google translate is like opening a present. It's great that you enjoy our videos, thank you! Sarah :)
Great video! So full of history. This will definitely be on my bucket list of places to visit
We loved our little wander around, even if we were kind of winging it! Loads to see and the Barbican has a great atmosphere, Sarah :)
Yes you both seemed like you enjoyed it. It's a shame that some of the sites weren't open but at the same time it's understandable. Hopefully you will both get to go into those places later when they are open. 😀
Thank you for doing this fabulous video of my glorious city😎
Our pleasure! Really enjoyed it! Sarah :)
This was really interesting. And I am amazed by the magnificent old buildings. I have heard nothing of Plymouth before. Just passed a few times by train and over the Tamar bridge to Cornwall ;-) I was an eager Beatles fan from 1965 when I was 11 :-) Got the album "Rubber Soul" for my 12th birthday. And I still listen to their songs. Lovely to see the Apaganthus flower at the end. They remind me of The Isles of Scilly where they grow everywhere :-)
Hi Torunn, the Agapanthus are out in numbers at the moment. I too, love these flowers, especially where they have been grouped together giving so much impact. Although I have tried to grow them in our garden, I have not succeeded! Sarah :)
Awesome, so much I didnt know, thank you
I always feel I’m leaving England behind when I go across the Tamar bridge ❤️😁 really interesting video, had no idea Plymouth had those lovely buildings and little streets. Thanks for another great video Sarah and Andrew 😊x
Glad you enjoyed it! A real delight to find so much history, even if it had to be pointed out to us! Sarah :)
Aw how nice to see you visiting my city
We had a great time exploring Plymouth and, after years of visiting the rather unglamorous shopping centre, we were delighted to find so much history, it's great. (Of course, I totally get why Plymouth city centre looks like is does) Sarah :)
very nice place to visit, my friend
Thank you very much! Sarah :)
Had to watch this one in silence...will try to get the i pad back to hear what was said as I have never been to Plymouth...looked very interesting and olde worlde there....will I ever find out why it is called the 'wedding cake' I wonder?!! When I get the i pad back I will discover the reason why I guess (or I will have to google it).... Your virtual vids are a doddle though without the i-pad's help!! J x
HI Judy! Still having problems with the sound? What a shame! Packed full of facts this video, with some atrocious puns of course! We had a great day, Plymouth is a really great place to visit, Sarah :)
Managed to get the i pad!! It all becomes clear when you have sound!! Loving the Beatle moment. Has to be John of course....Imagine all the People.....and I now know why they call it the wedding cake (complete, with as you say, atrocious puns from your other half!! J xx@@CornishWalkingTrails
Very enjoyable and informative video as ever - thank you both so much. Interesting that at the same time Southampton is also commemorating the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers from there. There is a park alongside what in the Pilgrim Fathers` days was the quay from where they embarked on the Mayflower and the Speedwell. The park is named Mayflower Park. There`s also a splendid Mayflower memorial in the city centre and the city theatre is the Mayflower Theatre. So it`s arguable I suppose that Southampton might be recognised as the starting point for the epic journey but I agree that Plymouth was the last place in England to see the historic departure. (Of course, Plymouth Football Club are known as The Pilgrims.)
That's so interesting! Apparently the Speedwell started to leak and they had to call in to Plymouth for repairs. The more commemorations the better I think, to honour such a brave, bold journey! Ironically Andrew supports the Saints! Sarah :)
love my city enjoyed the vid
Cheers! Sarah :)
An English Springer Spaniel was taken on the Mayflower ........ how many points have I accumulated to date on your show ????? 🍷🍺👍🇬🇧
Ahh, that's so cute! I wonder if it survived? I would want to take my dog with me. You must be top of the leader board by now! Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrails ....... Google it
Good to see you both up yer in Deben!
Ooh, baby, do you know what that's worth?
Ooh, Devon is a place on earth
They say in Devon, love comes first
We'll make Devon a place on earth
Ooh, Devon is a place on earth
So Cool! Sarah :)
Thank you very much 🙏♥️
I could move in to those cottages strait away
Plymouth.....the birth of the civilised world
You are very funny!!!!
Love your videos. Is that a Detroit Tigers Baseball cap your wearing?
Indeed!
To get there u walked past my flat or not...u saw it though @-@
Blooming grockles!!!
😂😂😂
Is there any connection between Smeaton's Tower and Smeaton's Pier in St Ives?
They were both built by John Smeaton! Sarah :)
The Wedding Cake was definitely the "ICING" on this video!😇
Their videos only show relevant information, they're not 'caked' in irrelevant information 🍷🍺👍
It was a 'cakewalk' filming that piece.
LOL! Excellent! Sarah :)
Could of been the cherry .?
Am i the only one who is no longer getting notifications from RUclips when CWT put on a new video, same thing happened last week too.
That's interesting because our views are lighter! We were concerned that we had made a terrible mistake, filming a video in Devon!! Sarah :):
@@CornishWalkingTrails Definitely not a mistake to go to Plymouth, we very often nip over the bridge to Plymouth for a day out when down in Cornwall if we are staying around the Looe /Polperro area. Good job i know to look out on Fridays as i would have missed the last 2 videos, checked all my settings and am subscribed with all notifications turned on, nothing has been changed but they have just stopped.... puzzling ! Loving the weekly escape to Cornwall , it's like being there, which i will be in 5 weeks time ! Chris.
Can I just set the record straight, the Mayflower was built at Killingholme Haven in modern day South Humberside not far from Great Grimsby. So surely that is where it set sail from, not Holland where some of the Dutch first joined the Mayflower or Harwich, Essex, where the Captain of the Mayflower came from, or Plymouth they were just Ports of Call on the Journey to the New World from the Shipyard that Built the Mayflower in Lincolshire.
I don't like plymouth but a I love it 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
We love Plymouth too! Sarah :)
Great historical place. Would have love Trump to have visited for 2020 400th anniversary......
Dont know if you know but the survivors of the titanic were brought to Plymouth Mayflower steps after the sinking
That's interesting, the poor things must have been desperate to get back to the UK. Sarah :)
Andrews puns and other word plays are multi-layered.
He like to wrap them up! Sarah :)
Dewnans a'gas dynargh, welcome to De'm, land of deep valleys.
I love the hoe also. Not swam in the pool yet. Xx
The merchants house is also very haunted
Oh cool! Andrew would be up for a night in there... Sarah :)
Wow awesome history,,,,,I hope u have kids,,,otherwise Andrews dad jokes are going to waste. Lol🇦🇺😂
We have two kids and they were subjected to the dreadful 'Dad' jokes! Sarah :)
🙋♀️
Cornwall is much nicer than Devon. I think it's terrible the great old houses next to the new concrete blocks. If I would like a video that is outside of Cornwall, I would like a video from Stourhead Garden in the fall. We were there in early summer but in autumn the colors must be wonderful. stay healthy, best regards
