Easily one of the best buys if you're sticking with the lowest trim. The select sport trim is okay if you can get it under MSRP. Immediately loses its value advantage once you hit the preferred trim. Better off just going for the CX-5 at that point.
@ The select trim’s between the two is only a $3000 difference. Which is why I said if you can get the trim under MSRP, then it might be worth it. Although the true price difference between the two is closer to $1,500. Since the CX-5 comes with standard AWD and more standard features per trim.
@ Right but if my budget is $30k, you have a choice between a bare bones Cx5 vs a Cx Preferred and save a bit of money it’s not the obvious choice you make it. Cx5 for my area are going for $33-$35k. That’s before taxes etc.
We have a 24 CX 5 that we like very much and I'm thinking about the CX 30 but don't know about the rear suspension. The 30 would be gorgeous without the cladding. The body lines are every bit as beautiful as the 5 . Hope Mazda doesn't change the 5 too much in the next generation. Just make it better.
Been a lotta years since owned a well powered small car. Had a great little 6cyl Beamer in Germany. What a rocket! Had a so fun to drive little wedge shaped Volkswagen Scirroco. Since those days been Jeeps, trucks, and a great Honda Accord Coupe. Maybe it’s time to give small and fun a try again!
If space is not a big concern this is the best you can get in the class in my opinion in terms of style, premiumness, quality and power. This something Mazda knows how to do best. This definitely a class above in terms of material use and it looks aesthetically pleasing which isn’t a given in all vehicles in this segment.
One must remember the rear seats are for the non-paying customers who should feel privileged just to be in your presence let alone riding with you. This vehicle would be perfect for me and my 41 pound pug. She just lost a pound last week. Check the picture.
My first time to see you guys and one of your reviews. I appreciate the detail and statistics and your insights. I am big on comparisons to get a perspective and I note your efforts in comparing this vehicle to others in its class. However, since the title implied a specific comparison to be able to choose between the CX-30 and the CX-5, I would have liked to have seen some more comments about that also. That is specifically the decision I am in the process of making - more than the CX-30 against its direct peer group. This did help me, but also the comments with so many stating that they would personally prefer the CX-5 even as they were impressed with the CX-30.
The Mazda CX-30 is a sleek crossover SUV with a stylish design and a smooth ride. It's a great choice if you're looking for a mix of comfort and performance.
Test drove it! Engine is buzzy! Not smooth! Needs more than a 6 speed transmission. Felt sluggish and interior is way to small. Not cargo space either.
I have a 2021 turbo. It’s been great. My 2 complaints are it’s small on the inside and it only gets 26.5mpg at 80mph. Otherwise, I love the torque, handling and the quiet interior.
No, you shouldn't, at least not if you plan on having people over 5'8" in the back seats routinely. Frankly, it seems to me that a Mazda 3 Hatchback will have nearly the same functionality and be more fun to drive, while the CX-5/CX-50 siblings make for better "Sport UTILITY Vehicles", just by virtue of being able to tote two adults in the back seat. On the other hand, if adults in the back seat are NOT a consideration, and the Utility/higher stance component is a BIG consideration, then yeah, this wee crossover rocks. I would be considering it were it not for the adults in the back seat.
Great review and good timing as my brother is considering one of these or the CX-5. Solid vehicle that has always been a great competitor in the auto market! Thanks guys! 👍
I'm getting a new vehicle in the spring, and the CX-30 is definitely in my top 5 to research list. I haven't actually taken one for a test drive yet, but I'll be curious to see about interior space up close and in person. One of these units was parked next to me at work the other day, and obviously, I couldn't open doors for inspection, but It definitely crossed my mind about how small it appeared. My other concern is I have a very small lightweight trailer I use for hauling a fishing kayak and grabbing pieces of furniture, etc. For whatever reason, these aren't rated to tow in North America even though I'm sure they're more than capable. Wouldn't want to void my warranty.
It’s small enough to be a deal breaker imo. Great for city parking but too small to fit golf clubs in the trunk (w/ the rear seats up), and realistically only seats 4 adults comfortably. I own a CX-30 but if I had to choose again, it’d a CX-5. Much larger greenhouse, larger cabin, and much more practical. And not to mention, a larger fuel tank.
I just bought one and I just love it. Bought the base GX model and compared to most other car makers you get a lot of bang for your buck. I have owned a Mazda for decades. I love the brand, very low maintenance compared to most other brands.
@tammyrobinson5249 was the 3 hatchback ever a consideration in your purchase? I find the 3 hatch a much nicer looking car. I really like this car, but Mazda is falling behind in comfort and tech features. After thinking about it for many months (during which I was set on buying the CX-30), I’ve decided to go with the BYD Yuan Pro for its interior space and price. Also, in my country, it costs $12,000 less than this Mazda CX-30.

Literally zero point to this vehicle. Just get a mazda 3 for a few grand less, or step up to the CX5. I hate this subcompact class, makes zero sense, no more practical than a sedan but $2-3k more expensive.
360l boot capacity vs 430l in mazda cx30 was a winer for me .I owned 3 for 2 years have now cx30 nearly 3 years and is better comfort and noise insulation plus I mentioned bigger boot..
@@RobSinox exactly same for me... Even with 430l not "so much" for a 4 persons family 😢 Hate that they did not try to "push it" on the latest years, since X2 (which was clearly its direct rival) with those 470l seems almost PERFECT for the size... (But has not mid-hybrid engine so probably because of it big trunk...)
For me, the deal breaker is all that plastic over the fenders and on the sides. Once all that plastic fades under the sun, the entire vehicle is going to look beaten up.
There is no plastics on the side. It’s only around the wheelbase and once you get used to it like I have a white one no snow pearl whatever white it looks really good. I like the look.

Unfortunately, it looks awkward, like a Mazda3 on stilts with some horrible giant unpainted cladding on it. Not a good look. It's also very dark and cramped inside with poor outward visibility. Monochromatic black interiors look cheap and generic. I hope Mazda increases the wheelbase and gives it a more chiseled SUV-like appearance similar to the MX-50, with lighter interior color options for the next generation.
Mazda is a king especially in 2.5L + 6 speed automatic! Real man not simp will buy this fun car instead of minivan! Real man should take care about his own comfort than pax.
A real man will do whatever they need to for their family. I can not stand minivans, but sometimes that is the only option for some families. If you need a rear facing car seat, the CX-30 is terrible, but if they are all forward facing, should be fine.
