Hi, I work for the USPS in kern county at a distribution center and we throw the mail for Darwin. They literally get a small amount of parcels and letters for their small population. We actually do the mail for all those small towns in that general area. Lone Pine, Big Pine, Keeler, Olancha, etc..

When we lived in Lone Pine (1978-1981) they discontinued mail to Keeler, making Keelerites drive into Lone Pine (30 miles round trip daily) to get their mail. They fought back and won, and Keeler has had uninterrupted mail service ever since.
Your mail center used to be in Mojave. If you lived in Big Pine and wanted to send a birthday card to someone in Independence (next town over) it had to go Mojave first, then make a u-turn and go all the way back up to Independence. They claimed it was faster than dropping their mail directly at Independence on the way to Mojave.
@@lancasterritzyescargotdine2602 yes it was in Mojave but the processing and distribution center closed and those operations were moved to Bakersfield.

I agree! It’s truly an essential service and sometimes a major means of communication for these small communities.

The portion of Hwy. 190 from Olancha to the junction is currently closed due to extreme flooding in late August 2023. Its reopening date is currently unknown.

I saw another video featuring Darwin, and the residents acted very very secretive about the location.
They didn't even want the channel owner to say the name. I mean, it's not a secret place, in fact one with a very significant population historically, engaged in fairly large-scale industry.

Yep, I tried to respect their privacy by just doing video of the place and not people. I wouldn't want to be bothered too much by a bunch of RUclips yahoos either. But, it is a very cute little town if you just want to hang out more-or-less off the grid. We saw a bunch of guys just hanging out by the post office, but didn't film or bother them.
How is their water situation? Do they have a pipeline, or do they have to drive water in by truck?
I believe they get the water pumped in from a spring about 8 miles away; probably truck in water, too?
Did you see the gold fish ?

no kidding? it was a bit awkward, I think the residents like their privacy. I tried to be respectful and not nosy around, kept them out of the video shots too. cute place, a bit out of the way. i liked it.
There is no such word as "sierras". The word Sierra is Spanish and is already both singular and plural. Only blue-collar bindlestiffs say 'sierras'! If you're in Olancha, you are not looking at Joshua trees. Cholla is Spanish and is properly pronounced "choya". Only blue-collar bindlestiffs say 'cholla'!
Yep thanks. I think those were Mojave or Blue Yuccas, not Joshua Trees (oops) they were sort of far away. Of course, it is choya....I just like saying cholla the blue-collar way - but, I went to the correct choya in subsequent videos. I did not know about the Sierra vs Sierras terms...thanks. Thanks for watching.
