.....so...because I just love to read the comments from the peanut gallery... 1st off, I could write a book about the pains and tribulations that come with trying to do what Eric does the way he does it. Everybody has their own style and their own method of playing. They create that over the duration of their career. He worked to do what he felt made him unique and showcased the kinds of musical ideas that he wanted to express, in as succinct of a manner as possible. When he RE WROTE the book (note every single electric guitarist playing today rips his licks and they are so signature that it is obvious to anyone who is familiar with Ej's playing where they come from. They stick out like RED ink on a black and white printed page), the availability of the kinds of gear, that fortuitously helped in the fine balance of the alchemy of that process, was already disappearing and decaying. That was nearly 35 years ago. Lots comes into play. Everybody seems an expert here and wants to chime their 2 cents. Everybody is a manager too. If he had done this he would be this. Well....if he'd been a girl and sung "Love Will Keep Us Together" and "Muskrat Love" he'd be the Captain and Tennille and you wouldn't be talking about his guitar playing. One guitar, one amp, one whatever...one jacket...one set of earmuffs..... it.doesn't dictate an entire scenario. "I don't like the geranium test tubes version as well as the glass bottom boat version of the pickle jar fuzzmotron." Most people have very simple set ups comparatively...and they have very simple jobs to do. Most guitar players have MISERABLE tone on their best days. He covers 6+ guitarists in one sitting...whereas most guys get ONE sound add or subtract wah wah.... As for the high E saddle...Eric always used a custom E saddle with a nylon insert to take the top end off of the e - string on the strat in the old days. This came from the nylon saddles used on Gibson ABR - 1 bridges. The guitar is a "Virginia" custom shop prototype guitar, hence the custom saddle. My god you'd think he put a left handed tremelo block in it.... oh....well...that's that other guy. The song is called S.R.V. because we were friends with Stevie....Eric wanted to make up a song that had some of the inflections that he heard in Stevie's playing that HE especially liked. If you wanna write your own Stevie Ray song with your favorite bits....man it's a free country go for it. As for this particular performance...I will add that everyone is really spoiled. You have a video of every burp and fart of every musician who ever played ANYWHERE at your fingertips on the internet. You know every person on the planet now has a telephone with a microphone and a camera and they think they're a mobile recording truck. There is NEVER a fair representation of what the ear hears from the speakers at the gig and even THAT is subjective, depending on what part of the room your sitting in....and this little Chekovian morsel...is one person's phone...at one position...x feet from wherever...at throw and go concert...with NO soundcheck to speak of...and an intensely MISERABLE monitor mix. This is a nice little gathering at a guitar show...it's not Carne Guisada Hall. We love the comments about Gene Hackman... at least I look like a YOUNG Gene Hackman....I hope you LIVE to be 60+ years old too...God Bless. Maybe you'll have some hair at all and we can recognize your features over and above the wrinkles where your face used to be. Eric does pretty well for 65 and he looks pretty damned good for 65...and really he can play just about anything he ever could...provided the gear will act right and give it up. That is a harder and harder thing to achieve with each passing day as I alluded to in the second paragraph. A great deal has to do with how the gear responds in your hand. The complexities of that....most people can't even begin to grok. The majority of people play with so much gain and saturation in their tone that they can do anything...but it sounds like that. He doesn't cheat. His style of picking and all of that is based around his concepts...if he changed that...then you'd complain he doesn't pick like he used to. It never ends... If you like Eric...that's fantastic! Keep supporting him! It's tough to go out and keep doing this at our age and even get by financially. If I'm involved...I'm out there playing for YOU...and we give everything we have...on every night. To quote Jack Bruce about Cream...roughly "some nights we were great and those are the recordings you are familiar with...other nights we were miserable." It's not a symphony where everything is written on a page and performed like an exercise. Its almost ALL improv within a framework...sometimes it's brilliant and maybe sometimes it's not. We do our best. If it's less than what you expected...try us again. If we lit up your tree, we're ecstatic. Go play your instrument. Write some songs. Jam with some friends. Life is short. It won't be long before the younger of you will be talking about this video and we might not even be alive. TT

It's just a harmonic with a pic instead of a finger. Not really that complicated. The complicated thing that he does is his chord progressions. They're ridiculous and impossible to any mortal human being like myself

Interesting that he has a different saddle on the high E string... I kinda miss his old strat he played on virtually everything back in the day, but his EJ model has to be one of the best strats that Fender has been making. Just wish it was 7.25" radius. Oh well, can't turn back time! EJ is a legend no matter what he plays.
I think it is the new custom shop 'Virginia' replica fender made him. He has a different saddle to soften the top end on his high e I think. There is a whole vid knocking about on that guitar :)
I always mesmerized by the voicing of his chords. It takes me seconds to adjust my fingers each chord, so the chord changes are particularly slow. I don't know how he manages it so quick. Well, yes, there is practice, but I can't see myself ever getting there.
Pisk Six, I’m sorry (in this instance) to say that I have fairly large hands so maybe I can’t understand wholly what your struggles are. There are so many great players today we are indeed spoiled I think. Extremely hard to rate one player over another being better......But....there are only 2 players off the top of my head that sound completely unique and original with their style, their sound.....that would be Jeff Beck and Eric Johnson...anyway in my little black book of great guitar players, Eric just gets a nod in front of Jeff Beck with more melodic playing...anyway my 2 cents guys.
There are Players literally THOUSANDS times better then EJ these days,( probably because it’s easier for any random person to get a nice tone out of even a cheap amp) unlike back then, so much more people taking guitar up and practicing all day...... but to even think that EJ is even in the top 20 thousands guitar player in the world is really probably untrue.
