The time of travel was just before Durga Puja in October 2019. We reached Guwahati - the largest city of Assam and North East India, from Kolkata in around 1 hour and 15 minutes. We stayed at Hotel Embassy, at Paltan Bazar, just beside the Railway Station, which is around 22 km from the Airport. The most of the budget accommodations at Guwahati are available at Paltan Bazar area.
Next day we had the whole day to visit the major Tourist/ Religious places of Guwahati. The city located on the bank of River Brahmaputra, is surrounded by the hills and has a very scenic charm. On a day trip visited:
Kamakhya Temple - the famous holy temple located on top of Nilachal Hill. The journey from the city to reach the hill top is through hilly serpentine road. On the way, from the view point, one can enjoy awesome view of the parts of Guwahati Town, surrounding hills and Brahmaputra from the top. Kamakhya is the ancient temple and the holiest place for the Hindus in North East India.
Basisth Temple - surrounded by hills & forests. Located on Sandhyachal hill near Assam-Meghalaya border, the ancient temple was built by Ahom kings in 17th Century. A hilly stream flows beside the temple. Also a water fall is created on the stream at this place. It is said that there was the Ashram of Rishi Basisth at this place, once upon a time.
Balaji Temple - the beautifully sculptured temple, in South Indian style.
In the late afternoon we availed the River Cruise on Brahmaputra. WE boarded the Assam Tourism’s vessel - Jalpari, from Kachari Ghat and visited Umananda Temple located at a small Peacock Island in River Brahmaputra. On the entire river journey we enjoyed the amazing scenery of Brahmaputra, surrounding hills and tiny islands. We also enjoyed the sunset in the river and colours of nature at dusk.
Next we had the train journey to Haflong from Guwahati station at late night. The part of which was amazing through the forested mountains, crossing the tunnels and streams. The 170km Lumding-Badarpur mountain section via New Haflong, is one of the most exciting and spectacular rail journeys of Indian Railways. For that a video is already there in our channel.
