1966: The Severn Bridge, a motorway suspension bridge that crosses the rivers Severn and Wye between Aust, in south Gloucestershire and Chepstow in Monmouthshire. It took 3.5 years to build and was opened by the Queen in 1966. It replaced the Aust ferry. But by the 1980s traffic levels had tripled.
