Snowzilla 2016 Timelapse - East Coast Blizzard (Reston, VA)

- My view of the 2016 blizzard that hit Reston, VA. 28in of total snowfall, snow drifts up to 3ft.
Shot on a D700 and 24mm f/1.4 in manual. Lens was shimmed to ~f/2 but I still missed my hyperfocal point, sorry for the front bushes didn't make it into focus. Processed with the help of LRTimelapse and Lightroom.
I think the best part of this timelapse is seeing the moon setting
I agree, and I believe it was full at the time, but perhaps not.

I kinda wish that street lamp had been out when the moon cast its light on the snow, but I like those lighted round bushes just before the snow got really deep. The neighbors all come out and help shovel the snow. Nice!

I like these videos, it’s interesting seeing snow pile up and the world cool down for a while. Also considering my country doesn’t snow and I was in Vermont a month before it happened.
After watching these snowzilla videos, I think Virginian has the prettiest neighborhoods.

Eehh, in Sweden in the start of December, this happend everyday from the 29th of November to December 4th.

I witnessed this happen. The blizzard. Pennsylvania. My sister, for some fuckin reason, tried to see if the snow would break her fall if she jumped from the roof. It didnt. She broke her leg. It was hell for both me and her

USA is awesome,I mean I live in Spain at same latitude as the north Virginia(39° N) and 700 meters of altitude,but you have so much snowfalls,while we have 2 or 3 in a year and about 10-15 cm max.
the most snow I see was in my town at 1000 meters of altitude(40-50cm).

I remember we got snowed in at Disney, there was no snow there, but the flight was cancelled so we had to stay at the hotel because we couldn’t afford to go to Disney again (we went for a week)

Is it snow often out there? On the news, I see them always talking about how big of a snowstorm they're getting and it's usually a couple of inches in NYC. Buffalo seems to have real snowstorms like this as well

My neighbor is always at work when the mail comes, so the parking isn't an issue. In this case, our whole neighborhood was snowed in, there was no way for a mail truck to even get to us.

How much snow fell in that particular storm? It looks like a good 8 to 12 inches accumulated. I live here in Columbus, Ohio and our biggest snowstorms are around 6 inches. I wish we got bigger snowstorms here because I love Winter.

Awesome. Since you were on a tripod with shots spaced out (I think you said 1 minute on NASIOC) why in the world didn't you stop down more than to f/2, though?
+Toshi Clark I was trying, but running out of time cutting shims out of cardboard and cramming them into the aperture lever of a $2000 lens =P
What I should have done is used one of my f/4 wideangles instead of the 24/1.4.
You have to manually stop down? I'm a Canon guy admittedly, so maybe it's an "interface with old lens on Nikon side is all screwy" deal, but why couldn't you just set it as aperture priority and let it run?
+Toshi Clark You can, but then you end up with aperture flicker. Canon guys unlock their lenses from the camera body and rotate it a few deg to lock the aperture... Nikon folks have to shim the spring-loaded aperture lever on the lens and not lock it to the body all the way.

buffalo,ny is ranked 2nd for most snow, our average is 8-10 feet every winter, its crazy 2 years ago 8 feet fell in 2 days, thats why our city has a bad rap
Snowstorms as big as that in that area don’t happen very often, but they get like an average of 20 inches a year

Snowzilla? This is everyday in Norway
Norway has proper equipment and infrastructure to deal with this. Northern VA does not. This kind of thing shuts us down for about a week here. My neighborhood doesn't even get plow service and we have to dig our own street out usually.

They do, but when the whole region is snowed-in, they are focused on getting the main roads open first.

I usually do 5min intervals, I'd have to pull up the app I used and see if I can figure out the frame rate. It's pretty slow, like 5-10fps.
