  • The Big Bang and the history of Matter By Ravi Sinha (Physicist and Activist)
How long has the Universe been around? How big is it? What does it contain? What is at the root of forms of Matter? When and how did ‘We’ appear on the scene?
These are among the most primitive and the deepest curiosities of us humans. Religions and philosophies have expressed their opinions on these questions but only science has answers that are accurate, consistent and supported by evidence.
This lecture gives an easy and non-technical introduction to the origin of the Universe and the subsequent history of space, energy and matter.
What evidence do we see in the Universe today for the theory that the Universe was born in the Big Bang about 14 billion years ago? How did forms of matter appear in the course of expansion and cooling of the Universe and how did hundreds of billions of galaxies each containing hundreds of billions of stars like our Sun were formed? How do the same laws of Nature that determine the properties and behaviour of fundamental particles also determine the origin and the history of the Universe? And which are the questions that still remain unanswered and whose answers are being sought by the scientists working at the frontiers of science?
This lecture attempts to shed light on this subject in a manner that will be accessible even to students of non-science streams and to any layperson who may be curious about the secrets of Nature.
