  • Happy to announce that our Spotlight Artist of the Month is Sir James Paul McCartney... Thank you to our alpha patron Gail and our discord members for getting all of this together. Y'all are the best. I had no idea Paul went blues on this album (thats what you get for not listening to all of it lol) track 2 and 3 are bluesy as hell with a McCartney spin... the other 2.... not so easy to classify. But they sound amazing... This album rocks, man.
Link to original content (Please support the artist! I'm just giving my opinion, go get the real deal.)
If you’d like to donate to the channel or just show your appreciation, all the details are below. I created this channel for my daughter, so she has videos of her father talking and doing something he enjoys(listening to music and talking about it) since I don’t have any of those of my father. :) thank you again for your generosity guys, I appreciate you all more then you will ever know.

This is my favourite Paul album.... If I had to choose of course... I wouldn't want to, but there it is. As for John thinking some of the lyrics were about him, it's not a surprised, I remember that back in the day just after they broke up John and Paul were at each others throats for a couple of years... each interview they did back then always had questions about each other. Keep on Rocking young sir.

I love how this album is now considered one of if not his best records.
I bought it the day it came out and loved it but was devastated by how disliked it was at that time. Critics. Many fans and the other 3 beatles all had nasty things to say about.
I think it was pre judged before people heard it.
We were all pissed off at Paul for splitting up the fabs .
When I was issued as paul and Linda it felt like 'here we go again" we all had enough of John and Yoko.
I got a lot of grief for defending this album. I feel vindicated now .

I Loved this Album!!! It was the Summer of 1971. Listening to this brings back wonderful memories of my girlfriend at the time. We didn’t make it as a couple, but we were lifelong friends until she passed 3 years ago. Here’s to you Darlene! Enjoy Eternity!
This was Paul’s opportunity to show everyone how gifted he was as an Arranger, Producer, and Songwriter…not to mention his lead vocals (range), and Harmonies! Most of the Songs on Ram have 3 to 5 different Songs within them! 😮 I knew Denny Seiwell personally. What a great drummer on this album! Paul is just a man with so Many amazing talents!

Smile Away is a nod to Paul's 1950 rock n roll influence called B Bop. Linda was on peddle base and sounded so good. Paul ever so positive has the tile repeated Smile Away and the refrain at first stats, I don't know how to do that, smile, then changes to ,I'm learning how to do that. Paul taking a sad song and making it better.

Loved this album. At the time when the record was released everyone panned it. His former band members publicly gave it bad reviews. His next album "Wings Wild Life" also had bad reviews. I liked it too even though it was a bit under-produced. It's quite amazing that he continued on since (a) his was getting constant bad reviews, and (b) he wasn't getting much money from Apple Corps/ABKCO. He really needed Linda to make him feel better.

I don't think being indirect is the same thing as sugar-coating. I know you're not doing this, but a lot of people use terms like that to dismiss Paul's lyrics as meaningless, saccharine or superficial, when they are not. The first 3 songs you reviewed here are a case in point. Dear Boy is Paul being a sore winner; he is calling out his rival for not appreciating Linda when he had her. 3 Legs also has a nasty streak in it. Smile Away is about resilience, not letting what others say or think about you get you down. The lyrics are pretty graphic rather than sugar-coated, though it has a positive message. Smile through the pain; you will persevere. Rise above it.

Over the years, this has become my favorite McCartney album. While, IMHO, nothing he did solo can compare to the masterpieces he wrote with The Beatles, this album is so chock full of wonderful melodies and artistic exploration that it stands at the top of the McCartney's extensive solo catalogue. As an example, if you listen to "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey", every second, from the first moment to the last, is brimming with melody, counter melodies, on and on. Like the song "Band On The Run", this song has a number of sections or "movements" that a less talented artist would have made into an entire song.
Ironically, this album came out at the height of his vitriolic and contentious exchanges with John Lennon. But, while Paul's "digs" against John Lennon were fairly constrained, Lennon was not a constrained man, especially when he was angry. And his album from the same year (1971), "Imagine" contained the brutal "How Do You Sleep", as well as "Crippled Inside" and others that left no doubt as to his feelings to his former best friend and writing and singing partner. But, like "Ram", Lennon's "Imagine" album was probably my favorite of HIS solo album. It's strange how often "negative" emotions (rage, sadness, hatred, jealousy, etc.) produce great music. Both "Too Many People" (from McCartney) and "How Do You Sleep" (from Lennon) are GREAT, memorable songs.

@@lauraallen55 , the "Plastic Ono Band" album is definitely the other strong contender for Lennon's best solo album. But, for me, songs like "Jealous Guy", "Gimme Some Truth", "Oh My Love" and, of course, the title song, makes it an album that I'm more often in the mood to listen to than the intense pain and anguish of the Plastic Ono Band album, as brilliant as it is.
Whenit comes to solo singles, Lennon's contributions beat his former partner's, certainly IMO. Songs like "Cold Turkey", "Power To The People", "Instant Karma", "Happy Christmas", "Mind Games", "No 9 Dream" "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" and "Woman" are all-time classics. They are much stronger than hit songs like "Silly Love Songs" and "With A Little Luck", on which McCartney's reliance on putting out shallow, cutesy records sometimes obscured his genius as a songwriter.

@@alanstein5930 No, POB is not music to have a pleasant time to for sure, but it is important work if there ever was any.
You perfectly expressed how I've always felt about that side of Paul's writing. While there are some of that style I like well enough to go out of my way to listen to, most of it I go out of my way to avoid. I much prefer the type of thing he did for Ram over With a Little Luck type of song.
Even some of his big ones with the Beatles, I could do without. Songs that everyone went gaga over like Yesterday and Let it Be are not songs I ever care if I hear again tbh. Songs like For No one, though, yes. I wish that's about as far as he ever went in that direction.
But Paul knew it sold, and apparently that mattered to him.

These were great - thank you. SMASH THE LIKE BUTTON, fellow listeners! And no doubt Paul is all over the place - in a good way - in his style/genre of song. But I disagree - sort of (after all, we should all be allowed to agree to disagree as long as it's done with respect) - with your comment on "Smile Away" backing vocals sounding like The Beach Boys ... sort of. They do kinda sound like that, but to me it is more reminiscent of the sort of swing rhythm and shooby-do-wah backing vocals on "Revolution 1" from The Beatles aka the White Album (my personal favorite as opposed to "Revolution" - the B side of the single "Hey Jude") - but "Smile Away is just a smidge faster than "Revolution 1" in tempo. And of these 4 songs, I think "Smile Away" was my favorite.

"3 Legs" is an example of why this album came under criticism at the time for being loaded with trivial songs that feel like 'White Album' leftovers. Many of the songs also promoted a rural domesticity that felt a bit out of step with the protest sentiment in vogue in the early 70's (that John had fully embraced). But the album has aged well, with "Smile Away" being a highlight for me. It's a great throwback to the kind of thing the Beatles did in the early days on songs like "Shout".
