Native New Yorker here… 41 years old, I have to say that in the 90s when NYC was “Dangerous”, your biggest fear was getting mugged on the subway… nowadays, your biggest fear is getting killed on the subway. The people just look like something is “not right” compared to the 90s…. It’s truly sad.

Former New Yorker here who moved out in 2000. The big difference back then (70s, 80s, 90s,) vs now is that housing was MUCH more affordable. It was also easier to hussle for cash and work. New York was still the city you could make a life for yourself if you tried from rock bottom. Now its a lot harder to hussle and find housing. Hence people move out and the ones left are left to suffer.

I'm a MTA Transit Road Car Inspector for 22yrs. My experience has taught me, you should always have a partner with you if you are going to roam the platforms at these times for hrs. Be mindful of your rear when you are at the edge of the platform while looking over the tracks. It is better to look over the track close to the support "I" beams to hold on to in case someone tries to push you on to the tracks. If you happen to get pushed and you have no time to get back on the platform then take off your back pack and lay down between the 2 tracks with your face turned to the side, suck in your tummy, keep your arms at your side and try to pull any clothing tight from getting snatched by passing train. It could be close especially if your belly is as big as mine lol. There are other options but they require experience.

Having been born in Manhattan 75 years ago and growing up in Queens, I could write a book about that subway. Although I moved out of NYC 15 years ago, much of what you showed has brought back memories, and honestly, very little has changed. The subway cars may be newer models and the advertisement may be more high tech but from my earliest recollection going back to the 1950s riding those trains with my grandmother as a child was an experience not to be forgotten. It was peaceful then but things began to change for the worse in the 1960s. The subway cars even had cushioned seats until vandals began slicing them up. West 4 station by Greenwich Village hasn't changed at all. Yes I was there around 3 in the morning sometimes coming back from a concert or hanging out. The same sights and sounds, the screeching of subway cars, the smell of urine, the scary people. During the early 70s I was a student at Columbia University up on West 116th Street and I had to commute by 2 trains from Queens. I had to drop out after just a semester from the stress every day from that subway ride when finally some homeless person threatened to cut my throat. What with the heroin epidemics and crime of the 1970s and 80s the subway was just a nightmarish hellscape. And today seems like things have not gotten any better. Thank you for your presentation.

You would think a city this large and all of the available resources we would afford to regain control of our city unfortunately the ball was dropped. It's been almost a decade since I've gotten on the train here in NYC and I won't simply because of this madness. I hope these videos are making it up to City Hall, Borough President headquarters, and Albany. I pray one day soon that NYC be restored. I pray that program and outreach services retrieve these people who suffer from mental illness and that they to be restored. This is sadness at it's best... Lord help us...!!! Yea, making shock content (for those who are unaware) like this will get views and clips will go viral, but 3am in a train station that you know in advance is “bizarre”? It’s not worth it. Until the MTA starts spending money on public safety and gets audited, all the bad things people see and hear about NYC subways will only get worse.

As a FORMER homeless person here in Pittsburgh who lived on the streets, you should NEVER approach people that close like you are doing. Some of them folks are COMPLETELY out of their minds, and you have no idea what they are capable of. Take heed, stay safe. Excellent film job! 👍🏻📽

I just take the midtown trains during evening times when its still crowdy. Never during late hours/night. I've never took an elevator and I never will, even not during day time. Fortunately never experienced scary or dangerous shit (except for the drugs and homeless problems), hope to keep it that way. Like u said, keep safe distance from the platform, dont ware earphones, look around, stay focussed. Subway system is perfect to get around in NYC, but always be aware of strange things/people. If u hesitate or dont trust the vibe, take a taxi or stay inside. Same advice for Europe public transport. Be safe everyone! Greetz from Amsterdam😇🤗

The West 4th Street station is actually quite an impressive and complex piece of transit underground infrastructure - eight tracks, six subway lines, converge on two levels. South of the station is a major multilevel interchange where each of the four tracks going in one direction can switch over to any of the other. For passengers, it allows a relatively easy transfer between train lines.
It is sad that we do not take care of fellow human beings who are having mental health and drug issues and provide them with needed services so that the only 'safe' space for them is a subway station. Say what you will about each of the 'homeless' people you saw, they're human beings and they're clearly should not be there and should instead be sheltered somewhere where they can be safe and receive help to live good quality lives. Some might even be able to return to living productive lives.
I have taken the trains late at night - lately and over the last 40+ years - and I have never been assaulted or mugged in the subway. There have been unpleasant situations, but I've never been the victim of a crime. As much as the 'homeless' people that you saw look disturbing and do strange things, they will leave you alone (as you experienced yourself). But, it is uncomfortable because you don't know that everyone is, indeed, peaceful, and because you see them doing things that are prohibited and just 'bad' for them, and for the other riders.
