  • We are planting Christmas Trees in 2021. See how we butt prune our trees before they get loaded into the planter and see how the scribe made the rows so we can mow both ways with the planter

    Thank you for posting this type of information, it really helps us newbys! We definitely need to look into a planter in the future.

      This was my second year using one and man what a difference. in the past we were planting under 1000 trees and we could hire some local high schoolers to help and we could get done in a day with say a total of 5 people. Now with the planter it takes longer to prep them than it does to plant them. I do see them posted in the Christmas Tree Facebook groups pretty often so keep in eye out and you could find a used one.
      Thanks for watching!

      Thanks Alan. How did planting season go for you? I hope you didn’t let your old job get in the way haha. The bad part about the drone is that now I want one haha. I have some really cool shots of the farm with it. Also I feel you could really show the customers what you have to offer.

    Drone footage really shows off the good cross hatch work. Well done! I want to think this is your first year with the tree-equip transplanter. If so, I’d appreciate your perspective on how to best set it up and what you think of it. You’re WAY more flat than I am and I have trouble with planting on hills because of the berm it leaves. Another great video - thanks Tony!

      Thanks for watching Ryan and as always the support! This is our second year with it. The planter does have a ton of adjustments for the packing wheels there was a video I saw in one of the FB groups that looked like the planter had some sort of skids after the packing wheels that smoothed out the ridges. I might go back with our 3pt landscape rake and smooth out those ridges.

    Hey Tony would you mind a quick explanation of why you prune the trees that way?
    Also have you found that the root dip makes a big difference? Thanks!!
    That drone footage was awesome, quite the operation!

      The trimming of the bottom branches is something new I wanted to do that year. I wanted to try doing while they were seedlings because it is easier than when they are in the ground. Normally when the trees get to be about 3'-4' high the grower goes through and trims the bottom branches off the trees. This creates the handle of the tree, makes applying herbicide under the tree easier, deters animals from nesting under the trees, and lastly easier for our customers to cut the tree. But when they are in the field it is a very labor-intensive job. Walking up to each tree, bending over, and cutting the bottom whorl of branches. So, my though was to do it while they were small. Here I can sit in a chair and just knock out all the trees in one sitting. I was concerned with mortally rate, I was taking branches off a small tree, but this did not happen. Survival rate was great and I did all types of trees we grow. I will be doing this moving forward from now on.
      I've used the gel dips for helping retain water. I can't say I've noticed a difference in survival. There are other dips out there that help with tree growth and I've seen pictures and they look great. I'll see if I can find the link. I want to give those a try sometime.
      Hope this answers your questions.
      Tony

      It is a Christmas Tree planter made by Tree Equipment Design. I'm not exactly sure the model. Thanks for watching!

    Tony is that a kelco planter. It looks like you don’t have to till and it does a good job?

    • @Hillsidechristmastreefarm
      @Hillsidechristmastreefarm  2 года назад +2

      It’s actually a tree equipment design. We don’t till at all we do band spray to kill all vegetation. It’s works well and has drastically increased our efficiency. The hardest part that I’m still trying to figure out is spacing in the rows. It does had a wheel that clicks but we haven’t be able to get it consistent. This year I’m trying landscape paint!!
