- 2 Men Ride Boxcar On Local Switching Freight Train Behind New Miami Fire Department. 6 Locomotives On Huge Train With DPU, 2 Trains Passing At Another Wye & Awesome Railroad Crossing At Rush Hour. These Trains Are In New Miami, Ohio And Hamilton, Ohio. Includes Train On The Indy Sub Passing The "Why" Where The Old Train Station Used To Be.
Looking for new angles to film trains near New River Junction, I decided to film a couple trains behind the New Miami Fire Department. This is an awesome looking old fire station that sits right next to the junction of the CSX Toledo Sub and the Norfolk Southern New Castle District. I heard two trains approaching northbound calling out the water plant signal and the New River Jct signal. I found an area where I could get an awesome view of the trains between the trees. This is my first time to get this particular angle. A few years ago I did film a Norfolk Southern train with a Heritage Unit here in the snow. It was snowing hard that day but it was a different angle.
The first train is a local that usually has a platform caboose. The caboose hasn't been seen in a while. On this day a couple of railroad workers were riding up high on the platform of a refrigerated boxcar. The local was reversing toward the Middletown Junction yard. Right after this train passed a huge train with CSX and Union Pacific power came through. This gigantic train had a mid train DPU with a total of 6 locomotives. I knew this train was coming because 1960gambit filmed it passing Glendale, Ohio and sent me a text. Leave a comment about this view of the train. Was this awesome or what? I like the fire station here because it reminds me of a fire department that I was a volunteer on back when I was a cadet.
Next, we go 3 miles south to another railroad wye. This one has a sign that says "Why" and sits at the location of where the Hamilton Depot used to be. This is in Hamilton, Ohio and is at the junction of the Indy Sub and the CSX mainline next to the railroad crossing on Martin Luther King Blvd. It was starting to rain when I started to film a northbound CSX intermodal with a DPU. Right after the DPU passed me I noticed a train coming off the Indy Sub and passing the intermodal. That was cool! The train coming off the Indy sub was a big one also. Right after the locomotives passed me it stopped for a few minutes and then went on south to Queensgate Yard in Cincinnati. That was really cool watching these trains passing. I heard the train on the Indy Sub call out a signal around Mile Post 28.3 or so.

The little shorty local was doing his job again providing potatoes for the hungry folks of Cincinnati. Some of those freight cars were creaking and groaning just like tired and sore muscles in the rain in dampness. That last train was a medley of freight cars and had a new player for all the gondolas that being OmniSource scrap. That white flat car with the blue wrapper was CW Colorado & Wyoming with the Avarz Steel Co name the same name younsee on occasion on newer rail. This time change is exhausting I think I'll take a nap with all the pets

Those were a couple of nice trains that you caught at the New River, Ohio near the fire station, Jaw Tooth! The two CSX trains that you caught in Hamilton, Ohio, at the wye where the Hamilton depot was originally located, were both long trains. The CSX train coming off the CSX Indy Sub backed up the traffic on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. Thank you for uploading this video for us to enjoy.

Wow! That was a fabulous NS mixed freight JT! There was a great array of different cars, including some brand new covered hoppers that looked very sharp. Everything looked so small from where you filmed that they looked pretty funny! I counted 189 cars but could be off 1 or 2. Excellent catch JT!

I heard the one on the Indy sub passing MP 28.3 signal. I was actually thinking about standing in the middle of the lot where the station used to be. I couldn't get there in time unless I walked over the tracks but I didn't want to do that.
D-P-U-I-C-U. Man the manifest train had a lot of locos and a DPU moving it, lot of power but a long train. Rail fan salute from the CSX, I remember a different kind of salute you got from one engineer several videos back. That guy must have been miserable that day! Jaw, you hit the jackpot on trains today. Great video!

That was quite a tonnage of traffic past there, for sure. The last one was as long as the Intermodal. I lost count again, with the articulated sets, I count the decks/containers but take an eye off to check for the 5-deck articulated ones and the count goes out the window. Nice one JT. Somebodys' spelling is off, it should be "WYE" and not "WHY". It's possible W H Y is a control point designation. Cool train meet. Excellent video again, thanks JT!

That steel load on the flat car with the blue tarp was supposed to be kept dry looks like but the tarp pulled off some at the front. Hope rain didn't hurt the load.

I might have to give up counting cars - lately they're so long, I tend to doze off, or my mind wanders and I lose count. Hey, I'll be 65 in July, so I'm entitled to doze off! 😄I tried looking up WHY on the Indy sub, but came up empty. I'm thinking something like West Hamilton Yard, but maybe if someone lets you know, you could share that in another video. Thanks again for another great video, Brian!

752 axles minus 36 for the locomotives (6) gives us a healthy 188 car train. Of those 6 engines, likely 3 were dead in consist, being moved for some reason.
Ok, so it's really a diverging track and not a true " Y", but you still can call it the WHY Y. Sorry I couldn't pass it up. Thanks for sharing. 👍

Just for info that isn't a wye in Hamilton or New River Jct. A wye is a triangular junction with three tracks where turning an engine or equipment would be possible. Those are just junctions that you visited.
Yes it is, a long one with about 800 axles.
You can't really help it what shots you can get in most areas. I can understand that Brian but they are some very awesome shots you got none the less my friend.

There is a wye on the far right track that passes over the river and makes it way up to AK Steel, Suncoke Energy and a few other companies.
