Hi John, Yes the target is much thicker than usual. The target is thick for a couple reasons. When they are thick they will not dry out and split as quickly. Knives don't usually wear out a stump or Round. What wears them out is drying out, cracking and then splitting. These rounds are part of my permanent mounted throwing course so they do not need to be portable. Usually they are cut about 8 inches thick and will last for a few seasons and they are not as heavy, but if they are not rained on regularly, they will split. We don't get much rain here. Also, these are the size that I found them. I was willing to use my pick up to hoist these heavy things in the air hoping that they would last a long time. So, yes thinner targets are the norm. And No I don't think that straw bails will work.
