Do you incorporate cycling in your run training?
Easy recovery only, after downhill running soreness.
Definitely! Zone 2 training is done on the racebike for example.
running 65k a week and riding 100k on the bike. keeps me fit @67.
I was run-only for 12 years & was frequently injured and I always bombed during marathons. Since incorporating cycling (and swimming) 10 years ago--and running LESS--I've become a much faster runner!
🙌
I could literally copy/paste this. Same exact story for me. Not even a little faster either. The improvement in my running since taking on triathlon 9 years ago is pretty significant
Same here Anthony. I was a big runner in my school years. Started getting all sorts of overuse injuries. That's how I got into triathlon, found I couldn't run 5 days a week anymore. Crazy thing is, now i run 2-3 times a week max and as fit/fast and injury free as ever. Knock on wood. 😂
How long per day would you guys bike for?
started cycling 4 weeks ago for a 70.3 and I'm literally growing new muscle groups out of my thighs!
I had been working with a run coach for 2 years trying it break the 20min/5km mark, came so close, 20:21 was as low as I got.
Dropped run to less than 30km a week, went to a Sh!t ton of cycling and didn’t just break 20 min, I blew the doors off it, 18:57.
Great! I am in the same path of sub 20min. 8 years of running, but last 5 months I dropped 5 minutes and got a 21min in 5k race. Just 3 days ago, started to feel a mild pain on gastrocnemius transictional area with the achilles. Overtrainning perhaps. Now , thanks the video and your comment, I will sure add cycling volume towards the sub20 dream.
How much is your cycling volume per week?
@@rodrn9640 when I posted this, was 300-350 per week
But some very high intensity at least 2-3 times a week
@@Tri_Ing_Guyhey man so how long per day would you say you were biking?
@@Tri_Ing_Guy That's quite a large volume. What's your cycling heart beat ?
In my opinion there is no such thing as a “recovery run”. The stress on the lower body from running makes recovery difficult to achieve even if the pace is easy. A recovery ride is a much better option as the stress is taken off the joints and muscles 💪🏻
I've thought this for years. Recreational runners need straight up rest and often end up running recovery runs too hard like most of their other runs.
Very nicely said..
Very interesting. For recovery rides, do you cycle for the same amount of time as you would have for your recovery run? And how would you describe your level of effort?
@@michaeloconnor2895 I personally don’t do recovery runs. But when I do recovery rides, I always do them on the turbo to minimise environmental influences. Intensity wise, super easy, able to breathe through my nose, Z1 power.
Recovery runs are still useful. It gets blood into your muscles and help your muscles recovery.
OK.
I swear every time I mention a topic out loud to a friend or a colleague, GTN releases a video on it within 24 hours!
Literally today I mentioned that one liner - running more doesnt make your a better cyclist, but cycling more can make you a better runner. Its definitely no the first time!
Kudos to you again, GTN.
Haha we are just that good!
i couldn’t run for about a month. i chose to get on the bike since i couldn’t run. i ended up cutting 21 minutes from my half marathon time. crazy
Wow what sessions did you do?
This is a great video. Thanks GTN! I’ve been running for 12 years but about 3 years ago I started to get achilles tendonitis. I increased my cycling & now focus on short 10k running events rather than half marathons or marathons. I didn’t realise how much it helps with running :)
Ive always loved biking and its a great way to supplement your running when you want to work different muscle groups and less stress on certain leg areas...I had a broken toe...and my doctor told me the only cardio I could do was cycling for 3 months so it really helps with injuries.
I just got tendinitis in my left foot from too much running, barely can walk ugh but I have no pain while cycling. Crazy! So cycling every day while my foot heals to run again. Definitely going to up my cycling, and reduce my running going forward.
Sorry to hear that - hope you're able to run again soon!
Love the pheasant photo bomb at 4:50.
😆
I’ve been cycling almost as long as running, but running made me a better hockey player. After I started running I became the fastest skater on the ice most of the time.
I have started cycling a few years back and now find that running is really good too, a great combination
@gtn is it time for 45+ series? How to train for triathlon for the aging athlete or late beginner? This vid reminds me of why, as a former runner, I got into triathlon with the exception of there was no GTN to offer/influence training.
Bro. It will make you a better person.
I have gotten shinsplints from running too much, I’m gonna cycle and swim the next 2 weeks too recover and try too keep my endurance :) thanks for the video!
Long time cyclist here, I was constantly getting shin splints when I tried to get into running which was really impeding my progress. I found taking my runs very slow and steady (zone 2/3 max) has really helped me increase my running frequency to now a few times per week instead of once every few weeks.
I've found using my mountain bike on the road for recovery works out better than my road bike due to the softer ride and relaxed geo. For cycling training however, my road bike is still the go-to.
Any chance for the video swimming for runner? Much appreciated.
My mate who got me into cycling after a 30 odd year gap loves it when i refer to it as cross training 😂. I recently suffered a back/hip injury (not running related) and wasn't able to run or barely really move about but could get on the bike(from a step!) and do a few flatish gentle miles and it really helped get movement back.Getting much better now and running ok but dropping runs from 4 to 3 a week for now for regular/longer cycling.
Not sure if I can agree with this. People who are predominantly road cyclists and use running as a cross workout are generally not fast runners or marathon enthusiast. I run every week but I spend more time on my bike. I feel like my cycling has gotten better and more efficient through running but the opposite cannot be said of the same.
The reason for this is running and cycling do not target the same muscle groups. Running focuses more on hamstrings and calves while cycling engages the quads and glutes more prominently - essentially, running utilizes more muscles in the back of the leg, whereas cycling emphasizes the front of the leg muscles when pushing down on the pedals.
As a welder there's a thing called "Travel Speed" Humans get comfortable with their travel speed. Whats happens when you put a runner on a bike is you begin to increase their internal travel speed, their new normal. 👊
I can't imagine trying to present while cycling...you can't peak at the script, you can't really talk with your hands, and you have to pretend not to be out of breath. Props!
Thanks! our presenter's do make it look easy!
I ran my first beach and trail marathon yesterday. I was meant to be racing Manchester but didn't feel comfortable traveling there in a packed environment. The furthest I have actually gotten around to running since last October has been around 28k with the majority of my runs being around 15 k at most. Consistency has also been up s**t creek. A few months ago I signed up to Rouvy & for the past 7-8 weeks a good 90% of my training has been on the bike so I was kind of surprised that I could still manage 42k yesterday. Sand dunes are not an easy running environment.
Excelente felicitaciones 👍🆗
4:48 why did the pheasant cross the road?
GTN, another great video, thank you! Is the opposite true - will running make you a better cycler? If so, well, there's your next video!
Thank you!
Less cycling and more flying, says photobomber at 4:49. :)
I've been cycling for a while, my muscles grew, I got stronger and my cardio is much better. I don't know why but after 20m run my legs are burning
Love the gear - is this still available?
Brilliant video !! Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The research on this is mixed. It seems that using cycling is more common with high-level trail runners than high-level road and track runners.
Ive been looking into using indoor cycking to replace my zone 2 long runs, i have a young family and getting out to do those longer runs is hard for me especially as i live in a really hilly area, so staying in zone 2 running from the house is practically impssible so i have to drove somewhere which again isnt always convenient with a young family. Not only that it is much easier to stay in a heart rate zone on a sationary bike. I want it to benefit my running though. So does zone 2 cycling help improve running performace over all? Id be running 3 times a week with 1 or 2 zone two session on the bike per week.
Cheers
as well as cycling - try rowing too
I do both of it when I exercise in gym, but not too sure how often sounds good for running in treadmill🤔🙋
Casual pheasant passing by in the background
One race a week on Swift and to strength sessions in the gym and I can still break 20 minutes in the 5K
Nice Ben!
Heartbroken that LCB is injured. Maybe that leaves opportunity for partner videos with GTN??
So will cycling help me run longer and faster. I run every other day and I usually run a 1.5 miles. Will cycling help me run a faster mile and also give me more stamina to run longer? Thank you!
That's a strong Jozi accent there my bru.
Who can't enjoy the 3 best outdoor sports put together?
Cycling pains (knee) dissappear by running, running pains are easily cured by cycling.
Will cycling on what would normally be a rest day (after a run) , Will it interfere with my leg recovery?
But does running help cycling? I find not. When I focus on running with minimal cycling my bike fitness decreases fast.
I can confirm this from my experience.
Would be nice to a scientific take on this question.
Running does almost nothing for your quads in my experience, and you really need decent quads to cycle with any speed or endurance. The little that cycling does for your calves is a lot more useful for running than the other way around
Running more destroys my bike legs
What is the thing called that you had put on your handles ????
Please any one can tell 😢😢
🙏🙏
Triathlon bar extensions, or aero-bars
How much power (watts) do you need to cycle on a stationary bike to equal easy run or tempo runs?
Its true
Is there any ratio for cycling/running?😂🤔🙋 I do cycling in gym about 10-15 min. but should I do more cycling for running longer distance? I want to hear more details about benefits of cycling brings to running, like: VO2max increase when cyclingthen go for running? Is cycling more often helps the strides/pace stays balanced when running longer distance/time? That type of studf🙏💦 I'm trying to expand variety exercises for improve running performance
4:50 That bloody peasant in the background. Disrupting GCN Royalty! Off with it's neck! Or, call Will Smith!
Running has made me a better cyclist.
Awesome!
Even better if you have access to a fairly heavy share bike.
I am a runner and want to start training for triatlon. What first bike should I buy? If I want to buy 1 bile, Shall I go for a tri bike immediately?
Just get a basic road bike, secondhand preferably to make sure you’ll actually enjoy it. If you enjoy it then you can upgrade if you want to but don’t spend a lot of money
Is this just for cycling? What about normal bike riding?
What do you think about replacing some long run (25km) by long ride (100km) for ultramarathon training?
Makes sense, when you are base building
I am trying this now, and that’s exactly why I watch this video 😂
Yaaa howsit
What kind of Tyres are on the road bikes?
Slick tyres usually between the width's of 23mm - 28mm!
If you want to be a faster runner, run; if you want to run for longer, run. Improving at running requires you to run; however, cycling helps with conditioning and allows you to continue to train when you're unable to.
Can you recommend an actual Marathon training plan that incorporates cycling into the program? I’m not sure one exists.
There’s a book “Run Less Run Faster” that incorporates cycling/rowing/swimming choices as cross training into the training plan.
Run 3 times a week and cycle twice the other days. Run training for marathon should incorporate: speed run (intervals), tempo run at 10k pace and one long run at marathon pace or slower. Cycle the other two days at whatever intensity you feel suits how you feel
@@jimjamthebananaman1and swimming 🏊 and strength 💪? 😂
Someone needs their gears adjusting! 😁
I’ve never found much cross over to be honest. Running is much harder on the body…
Try cycling every day (ie to work if you can) with runs 3-6 times per week. Every time I've been on that grind, I've seen huge gains in my running because the cycling forms a great base load while running is difficult to do at all without taking your heart rate into zone 2 or zone 3 unless you're at the elite level. You still have to do a ton of running, but the cycling basically allows you to add even more cardio without the joint/tendon/bone impact from running.
I disagree. Running will definitely make you a better cyclist though. An old man can ride a century, but few runner can even run a marathon
Is that.. Mark's Felt?
👀
First!
Why did the chicken cross the road?
It sounds terrible. You must repair your bike.
That’s disc brakes for you!
