ABOUT BROOKLYN NINE-NINE
"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" follows the exploits of hilarious Det. Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and his stoically ever-professional captain, Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher), along with their diverse, lovable colleagues as they police the NYPD's 99th Precinct. In this final season of the series, Jake and the squad must try to balance their personal lives and their professional lives over the course of a very difficult year.
Rounding out the ensemble is Sgt. Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumera), who has a passion for organization and a weakness for dork dancing; Lt. Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews), a mountain of a man whose most powerful muscle is his sweetheart; Jake's best friend and human puppy dog, Det. Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio); and the incredibly secretive, tough-as-nails Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz). Also part of the Nine-Nine are veteran officers Det. Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller) and Det. Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker), whose only skill as police officers is their ability to make a passable pot of coffee.

For those wondering about the maths here, I'll try to explain as best I can.
When you make your first choice, before any doors have been opened, it's a 1 in 3 chance of picking the exact one that has the car behind it. That means it's a 2 in 3 chance that *either* of the other two doors has the car behind it.
Then the host opens one of the two other doors, showing it's empty. But because it was a 2/3 chance that either of the other two doors have the car, and the opened door has no chance of having the car, that means the remaining door carries the full 2/3rds chance of having the car behind it. So like Kevin says, you have a 2 in 3 chance if you switch as opposed to 1 in 3 if you don't.
It's super weird to think about, but I hope that helped!

Actually, there's a different explanation. What you refer is a theory by Steve Selvin. Which is Kevin side of the story. Meanwhile, Raymond believe that "Probability doesn't kick in" which is what Scott Smith said back in 1990. Scott Smith said that the doors have the same chance of 1/3. He believes that when one of the doors is revealed and it was a goat, both doors now have an equal 1/2 chance.
This is actually a good paradox
This is a very wrong way to calculate probability. by definiton, probability is ratio of favourable outcome to total outcome. In this case, total no. of possible outcome changes when host opens the door. Total possible outcome change from 3 to 2 while favourable one remains 1.

Yep, 3 doors, 1 prize, 2 duds, no matter what door you initially pick you will always be shown one of the doors with a dud, since there is a 2/3 chance you will initially pick a door with a dud and a dud door is always exposed, switching increases your probability of picking the prize door.

your chances only increase if they open one of the remaining two doors which you didn't pick.. if you just pick a door out of three and they straight open it, without opening any other doors, you'll just have a 33.3% chances
The best, most obvious way I've seen it explained is this;
Just imagine that the same rules apply, but instead of 3 doors there's 100. If you choose one door, the host eliminates 98 other doors, and then asks you whether you want to keep the door you pick or switch to the one he left, obviously you're going to fucking switch. The logic is the same even with 3 doors, it's just not as immediately obvious.

If anyone is actually interested in the maths. The reason that you should switch door is because when you picked one of the three doors it was a 1/3 chance of having the car. Even when you remove one of the other doors the chance of it being behind your door is still the same at 1/3, meaning that you have a 2/3 chance of it being behind the other door.
Math teachers should really just increase the number of doors to make it more obvious: 3 doors is the minimum for the puzzle to work, but it means the difference in probability of winning isn't that large.
Imagine a Monty Hall game show, only now there are 100 doors. After you pick your door (1% chance of picking the correct door), the host opens up the 98 of the remaining 99 doors which he knows doesn't contain the prize, and leaves 1 door left.
Your pick: 1/100
The remaining doors: 99/100
Hell, the host doesn't even need to open the doors! He can just say:
The remaining doors: 99/100

As hilarious as Holt was in this scene, Amy's reactions make it even better. Her whimper when Rosa told Holt that he and Kevin need to bone, her cringe when Rosa repeated it, and her rocking in the chair when Holt shouted, "BOOOONE?!" were beautifully done.

It's easier to visualize if you imagine there being more than 3 doors. If there were 100 doors and they opened 98 after you chose one it becomes much more obvious that you should switch. Basically the chance that switching will get you the prize is equal to the chance that your first guess was incorrect, which in the case of Monty Hall, is 2/3.
