My Sweet Sixteen party was a luncheon at a local nightclub. (They we’re open for lunch on Sat. for such celebrations.) Johnny Ray was the entertainment and at the time he was my favorite. Still have the photo of our table with the guests. Still a warm memory, after all these many decades.
When I was 2-1/2, my grandmother took me to W.T. Grant to buy a record because I was constantly singing this tune. I didn't know the words but when I sang the melody for the girl, she pulled out "The Little White Cloud that Cried" and played it. I jumped up and down with pleasure! This was my first record.
I was about that age ('49er)...i would sing that song in the kitchen by the woodstove. I'd sing it wit all my might. Drama queen they say I was. I love singing still. Just put on the Tempts, Tina Turner...youll hear me singing all the way to your house.😃
Saw him At the Tropicana in Vegas 1963 I was eighteen and had A cognac For the first time. Many more followed but that was a great start for my love of music and all the talented performers I had the pleasure to love
Love this, love it so much, known since my childhood but only now do I think I truly understand it. Thank you Johnnie Ray for taking me through those 'building' years and happy memories of growing up. And what a voice... Special man, Bless you x
Originally from Oregon, he made his name in Detroit. Singers in Detroit, black or white, are known for energy and total commitment. That was Johnnie Ray. He sang like life and death were at stake on every note.
This songs ends my very favourite episode of the TV series "Happy Days" Season 1 ep. 4 "Guess Who's Coming To Visit" The short lived character "Moose" dances in the deserted Arnold's with "The Girl" I saw it in the throws of grade 7 puberty 1974, it's such a touching scene and I've never forgotten it.
I went walking down by the river Feeling very sad inside When all at once I saw in the sky The little white cloud that cried He told me he was very lonesome And no one cared if he lived or died And said sometimes the thunder and lightning Make all little clouds hide He said "Have faith in all kinds of weather" "For the sun will always shine" "Do your best and always remember" "The dark clouds pass with time" He asked if I'd tell all my world Just how hard those little clouds try That's how I know I'll always remember The little white cloud that sat right down and cried (The little white cloud that cried)
My papa just passed at 89 years old. This was his favorite song to play. He would always have me find it on RUclips for him cause he couldn't figure out how to use the computer lol. Rest up Papa Hank.
@Kent Lewis Most films of him singing are in black-and-white, so researching what his eye color was can be difficult. Still photos taken for publicity could have fake eye colors.
@@kathrynfauble9053 Perhaps you are being intentionally, dryly funny. If not, it is worth noting that "blue-eyed" in this context is a metaphor for white people. A white person does not need literally to have blue eyes to be considered a blue-eyed soul singer.
In the February 2nd, 1952 issue of Billboard Magazine, Johnny Ray's "Little White Cloud That Cried"* peaked at #2 {for 1 week} on it's 'Records Most-Played By Disk Jockeys' chart, and for the week it was at #2, the #1 record for that week was Johnnie Ray's own "Cry"... @MyCorvette Johnnie Ray lived in a house in Los Angeles near Doheny Drive. He was very much a loner and did not socialize much with entertainment industry insiders. By 1981, many residents of Los Angeles did not know who Johnnie Ray was. He was no longer a member of the Screen Actors Guild.
Thanks! Johnnie Ray created quite a sensation prior to Elvis He was deaf in both ears Hardly any footage available when Johnnie created havoc with audience with his gut feeling gyrations "Cry" inspired many of us to sing from total soul!
Before he got a hearing aid he always want with one hand over an ear. The first time in heard this was on happy days. I fell in love with it. He had some other great hits. The sad thing was that somebody outed him as being gay, and in that time it could ruin you. It ruined his career. He became a very heavy drinker, and died of liver failure. Very sad. He has a great song called cry.
I think he wrote that song, and believe he had a very unhappy life. Everytime i listen to it, i tear up because i can feel his pain. i am 80 years old, and he was one of my first crushes, I will always remember and love this great talent who sang from his heart.

I, a little girl when saw him on the Ed Sullivan show singing this song. For a little Black girl the song brought resolve to my life.
When I was a little kid, my sister used to play this on her record player in her bedroom...over and over and over.
This is one of the saddest masterpieces of all time

Awww, how sweet. That was a little before my time, but I completely understand. Those were much more innocent times. Which we need today.
God bless

Saw an old video clip of Johnnie Ray on the Ed Sullivan show & he sang this with so much emotion!

IT WAS THE FLAME CLUB I BELIEVE..MAYBE I GOT THE NAME WRONG. DIDNT DANNY THOMAS ALSO START OUT THERE?
@@robertchesnosky3508 Yes, the Flame Show Bar. I don't know if Danny Thomas would have been booked at a black club.

Such an amazing, unique voice. Chills! I used to play this 45rpm record over, and over!!!
I went walking down by the river
Feeling very sad inside
When all at once I saw in the sky
The little white cloud that cried
He told me he was very lonesome
And no one cared if he lived or died
And said sometimes the thunder and lightning
Make all little clouds hide
He said "Have faith in all kinds of weather"
"For the sun will always shine"
"Do your best and always remember"
"The dark clouds pass with time"
He asked if I'd tell all my world
Just how hard those little clouds try
That's how I know I'll always remember
The little white cloud that sat right down and cried
(The little white cloud that cried)
thank you for the words!!!

A song that has been forgotten by people my age ... that should never be forgotten!
Not forgotten by Bob Dylan.
Love this song and Johnnie Ray. Remember hearing it on the radio back in 1951 when I was very young! LOL
wonderful memories of 1951
I was 2yrs old when my mom put this song on & i cried it was so sad & i've loved Johnny Ray ever since, such a beautiful voice😢😪🙋♀️💚💞🌼💌🌸💟❤
I have always loved Johnny Ray and this song puts him over the top :)
Lovely memories of my teenage years
Somebody once said that Johnnie was the link between Sinatra and Elvis....I think that's a pretty accurate description.
Yes, the first young rock star.
such an amazing voice for someone who was deaf, my favorite song when I'm feeling down
Treissa Barnett he was deaf??? Wow!
No link He is unique like an Edith Piaf
No link JR stands on his own unique talent
Listened to this when I was 13, loved his voice, dd not understand the angst he felt, now I know.. You are awesome Johnny Ray!!
Mrs H ...My mama's music...Now she's no longer here I listen and sing to it often
Not only the link between Sinatra & Elvis but IMO the first blue eyed soul singer.

I think maybe this song was ... hitting home for Johnny Ray
This guy came out of nowhere and introduced me to a new vocal style that I never heard before. I'll never forget hearing him for the first time.
Thanks for posting this wonderful recording by one of the greats. Bringing back memories

Had this played at my dad's funeral 😢
I found this amongst my Mom's things after she died. I wish I could've asked her what she felt when she heard it.

I love this song 😍 I have CDs my bub in Christ Jesus made copies for everyone at Church or any one who was listening to his radio station 😍
@Michelle Nine Many Episcopal churchgoers encourage each other to listen to Elvis’ music and Johnnie Ray’s music.
Why isn't he in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
always had a soft spot for Johnnie Ray from my 20tys
such talent.....

David used to sing this. Bernice

Thumbs up if Dorothy Kilgallen brought you here.
You can feel his torment. He looks so sad - and awkward - at the applause.
@Griwhoolda Maybe he needed mental health counseling. In the 1950s, in the United States, a stigma was attached to that.
I came here following the "Come on Eileen" rabbit hole.
Innovator..he was the first artist to...walk the stage....instead of just stand in front of mic
In 1976 I wrote a paper on the his
Come join my Johnnie Ray ~ "The Nabob of Sob" ~ The Johnnie Ray Fan Page. It's great.
Put johnny ray on rock and chips led me here
Nostalger. but whether its live ?
I expect it's live, what he's wearing in his ear is a hearing aid because he was partially deaf.
The studio recording had The Four Lads backing him, this does not. So yeah, live.
Never heard of this guy before finding out he had an affair with Dorothy Kilgallen.
