The Volkswagen Beetle remained the bestselling vehicle until the late 1990s. Since production began in 1938 over 21 million have been sold. It’s a classic design which dominated one of the toughest motorsports in the world for decades, off-road racing.
The Beetle was originally designed by Ferdinand Porsche when Hitler asked him to design a Volkswagen, German for “people’s car”. Porsche designed it to last!

Not really. The Corolla badge is stuck on a number of different Toyotas around the world as opposed to a single model. It doesn't matter, though, because the best selling vehicle of all time is the Honda Cub with over 100 million sold and counting.
And that makes it cooler than a bug?

I get very annoyed when programme continue claim that Ferdinand Porsche design the VW Beetle when the only thing he did was to copy “steal” the design from Tatra’s Hans Ledwinka of Tatra Cars.
You only have to look at the early Tatra company (originally Nesselsdorfer-Wagenbau) in Kopřivnice (Nesselsdorf), then in Czechoslovakia, now in Czech Republic, and between 1921 and 1937 Hans Ledwinka was their chief design engineer. He invented the frameless central tubular chassis (so-called "backbone chassis") with swing axles, fully independent suspension and rear-mounted air-cooled flat engine. This continued up to the end of car production with the 613.

The VW Beetle is not, nor was it ever, the best selling vehicle of all time. That title goes to the Honda Cub which has been in continuous production since the late 1950s and of which over 100million have so far been sold, a number that does not include the multiple unlicensed Chinese copies.
