Brilliant video mate - doing the hike in 2 weeks and this has really helped on a couple of points that I was concerned about - i.e. poncho or no poncho/ how much food to bring/ bringing a water filter. Btw can highly recommend the Altra Lone Peak 7's for your next hike - absolutely astonishing comfort, quick-drying and not a single blister!
Setting off on the WHW at the end of this week so this was so helpful! The start of the exercise bit made me laugh so much 😅 Cheers from just up the coast from you in Alnwick 😊
Like it! BTW me using a poncho plus your army wet weather trousers, paclite, ok, camouflage, but light and cheap with zippers to get them on easily. Very useful also when it is getting a bit colder....
Yes full beast mode on attacking insects..Here in the US ticks and mosquitoes especially can give you lifetime illnesses but mainly just the comfort is why why to do it. Have fun stay safe.
Very informative video which is greatly appreciated as we are doing the walk next spring.we will go with more confidence now after watching your video. Thank you
Hey, glad you back safe. Regarding the shoes, gore tex holds water, trail runners are like a swimming pool tied on your feet. But if you stay on the path and dont carry heavy. Thats 15-20 kg in my mind, its ok. But i would never give up my high rise hiking boots, for any other shoe. They are kevlar renenforced, leather breathable, goretex level water resistant, for stabilety and safty from spraining ankel or slipping on wet or uneven surfus. They dry fast, if wet. And come with a warranty. Spraing a ankel, missing a step or slipping is one of my biggest fears when alone, and in the mountains even more sow. But hey, i over practice over coustion. I do bring along crocs, for chilling around camp, i aint a masocist :) They work well for biking, wading while flyfishing and being a lazy peon :D Best of luck, lots of love. If you like my comment check out my channel, Holmen.
Thanks for the comment! My trail runners have just arrives today, im off on a hike to test them out and see how they go. Worst case scenario I have a new pair of running shoes, I hoping for the less technical terrain hikes they should also be good for. We'll see 😀 Of course, ill check out your channel. Atb
@@DazzyOutdoors you dont have to, but thats kind. Only saying cus i enjoy your content. Best wishes, lots of love to «Little Britan». Sorry for your loss. And good luck blazing throught those trails!
I wore Altra Lone Peak trail runners on my thruhike of the Colorado Trail this summer. They're lightweight, no problem getting them wet. Worked great. Next time I might find shoes with a little more support for rocky trails.
Yeah you'll be fine. Theres only one slightly confusing part, and that is before Conic Hill you'll see two WHW signposts. If you take the left route you'll bypass Conic Hill. Or you can go right and it'll take you up and over. I recommend going up there, the views are unreal!
Really been enjoying your channel.....no ego at all and all topics based on first hand experience. Well done and thanks for taking the time and trouble to share! 👍
Try Altra lone peaks for trail runners. They have an open toebox and are zero drop. Which means that the heel side is not raised up. Do not use the Sawyer mini. It sucks. Use regular Sawyer squeeze.
Ive already got my running shoes on order. Those Altras look great though and to be honest sound like they'll be more suited to the job. But I like the look of Nike's, I know im a dafty 😂
Hey, Daz, you might also like to consider carrying Hi5 powder pouches. These will give you lots of energy as well as providing you something flavoursome to drink during your hikes rather than just sipping water. They don't weigh much but will give you a lot of slow-release energy. You may be able to order them from Wiggle or Planet-X. They're rocket fuel for cyclists.
I hadn't heard of them before your comment. Thank you! I'll most likely be ordering a few of these. It's exactly what I was missing on certain sections of my hike
Really rate Altra lone peaks go for the none waterproof ones and carry some waterproof socks, had a pair for over a year never had a blister or saw spots. Or go light weight boots, Altra lone peak trail, just got some myself and so far so good.
@@DazzyOutdoors I personally have, had good experiences with them, when I hike I just chuck them in my bag if using none waterproof trail runners then swap them out if my shoes get wet through.
Loving your vids, WHW was very informative. I'm in the process of getting ready to do LEJOG next year which incorporates the WHW and the suggestion of trail runners is one to look at. I have two pairs of karrimor which are good for long walks over all types of terrain, pair them with some merino wool socks and you're on to a winner. I've only done a bit of the south west coast path with an overnight wild camp, learnt a bit just from that - like you say all learning experience ready for the next adventure :)
Thank you! LEHOG looks like a monster! I wish you the best of luck with it. Totally agree merino wool socks with whatever shoes you’re wearing is the way to go! Atb
Thanks for sharing mate, I got a hike planned for Oct, no where near what you've done, but there's some good tips there. Glad you mentioned your running shoes, that thought crossed my mind, so think I'll try it out! My runners are super lightweight and dry quick enough should they get wet, I'll also probably spray them up, with that waterproof stuff just before leaving to give them a little helping hand. Anyway, looking for to see your next adventure!
Yeah i'm thinking that may be the way now for longer hikes if the terrain isn't too technical. All the best for your trip, you'll have to let us know how it goes with the running shoes!
Not all summer bags are created equal Daz. I use the snugpak tactical 2 and though a summer bag, is rated comfort at zero degrees with a -5 limit. I used it in Scotland in March and it was great. If you think of a summer bag made for high altitude and you need the better performance. Same weight as yours too and not down.
@@DazzyOutdoors I'm a bit wary of buying their gear now as most of their production has switched to China, and since this has happened, standards have dropped. Your little tent experience has put me off further lol. Sleeping bags though, they seem to be spot on. This is my second and no complaints at all.
Enjoyed this video, thanks. About boots vs trail runners I've been seeing the recommendation to ditch the boots from RUclipsrs and I'm open minded about it but just saying that when I did the WHW and Ben Nevis last May I was glad of my boots (cheap and comfy Quechua MH100 Mid) against the relentless hard rocks of the Old Military Road which can be really punishing. (I got decent socks though, just as important). No major river crossings to do and dried them out in the drying room at campsite in Kinlochleven after getting hammered by a storm in Glencoe. No blisters after 100+ miles. I agree about the poncho..I thought I was being clever using one but gale force winds and rain made light work of it and my rain kilt.. useless... I got soaked :-) Like you said, should've tried the combo out before going!
Hey thanks for your comment! I’ve tried out some trail runners since making this video but they didn’t fit great so I returned them. So I’m back to the boots for now. You’re right though if committing to some trail runners there’s going to be some cons I’d also have to consider. I can imagine in the future I’ll end up settling for something in-between, like a lightweight boot. Atb
Your boots are light weight? I spent years in Lowa GTX combat boots, yes they are heavy but they keep your feet dry toasty & your ankles well protected from injury on rough terrain.
I want to try my look with them trail runners. I may not get on with them without the extra support, but at the end of the day at least have some new running shoes 😆
@@DazzyOutdoors There is that I guess. Not a criticism but I noticed on your video while you were walking your boots didn't look well laced up or very waxed up, both would go & long way to help you with waterproofing & comfort. You might find some gaitors useful if you don't have already. Will stop water seeping in through the ankle area of your boots/shoes. No wet socks no wet footwear. Especially if you want to wear shorts in the rain.
Well, you have definitely 'unsold' me on the Snugpak BIVI. I wonder if you just got a faulty one. The only part I can't be sure about is your choice of footwear. I need ankle support and prefer to try and keep my feet dry if possible and hence I'm seeking a lightweight pair of hi-leg boots. Were you happy with your recording gear too?
It is possible I did just get a faulty one, either way I think I’ll still just look for something else. Yeah it’s that pros n cons game again, on difficult terrain hikes I’ll probably go back to the boots, they’re definitely the safer option. I just had the GoPro 10 with me, but yeah I think it’s ideal for these types of trips. Waterproof lightweight and durable
@@DazzyOutdoors Yeah, a lot of long distance Hikers I've watched just film, post edit and upload straight from their smartphones. Screens are too small for my eyes to do that.

I've just switched from the Sawyer mini to the Katadyn for hiking, the flow rate is much better. Will still be using the Sawyer Mini/Water bladder combo for more static camps
I mean there’s the possibility I could’ve just had a faulty stratosphere, but aye im just going to stay away from that one in the future haha. Those Inov8’s look decent! Also great shout with the waterproof Kilt, I’ll check out your video. That could be a future purchase. Sawyer mini does the job for me, but that katadyn keeps popping up. Appreciate the tips man

I've already got mine on order now but I did see Hoka's pop up quite a bit when doing a little research before hand. I'll have to see how I get on. I appreciate the advice
If you're gonna go for trail runners, don't go for waterproof ones. Unless you're wearing gaiters and rainproof overtrousers, your shoes are gonna fill with water and stay wet the entire trip.
