What I find most intriguing about Kim is that she got a recording contract in the first place. Seriously, after a lifetime of what would have been the usual route - music in school, singing in choirs and taking voice lessons, some Simon along the way would have said to stop trying as SHE HAD NO VOICE! She even makes Marlene Dietrich sound good! But then, it was the age of Janis, Stevie, Joe Cocker, Rod Stewart... voices that would never survive a televised talent contest today...
I disagree. Kim can sing! Having a charismatic voice is more important than being a 'technically proficient singer'. Bette Davis was old when this was released (when was Bette Davis not old?!) so having a mature voiced Kim Carnes sing it slightly out of tune made sense. Kim Carnes and Stevie Nicks have a similar vocal technique. A British reviewer in the 80s said Carnes & Nicks sang like chipmunks stuck in a cheese grater(!) which was cruel but he was just biased against Americans generally.
There you go, conjuring that early 80s musical magic. 👏
Amazing ! Thanks
