I’ve got a 03 xterra supercharged, I’m in Tennessee and take it to all kinds of off road trails and they kick ass, I’ve never been stuck. this thing puts down power and pulls through deep thick mud, I’ve had this rig in my family since I was 4 years old when it was brand new and it’s only got 85k miles, you couldn’t pay me a million dollars for it I love this rig man
Awesome review! I chose my Xterra for the following reason: rugged outdoors purpose. As you highlighted it has a roof rack with storage bin for wet/muddy/dirty items, side steps on rear bumper, towing capacity, interior that can be easily wiped down, versatile rear storage with tie downs (you can purchase a Nissan storage/organizer bin for the trunk that integrates with the tie downs so it doesn't move, the rear hatch has a built in first aid kit which is missing in the Xterra featured in your video. My Xterra is a 2015 Pro 4X model which came stock with a rear locker and upgraded suspension from factory. Xterras also came in a 6 speed manual transmission as an option. Other than that it is a pretty straightforward, simple, utilitarian design with rugged outdoors good looks!
I've had my Xterra for over 10 years now. Here's a list of problems I've had to watch out for. Slowly losing rear axle fluid that I have to keep an eye on, making sure the fluid level is up. Drive shaft bearings that have worn out quickly causing a vibration there a couple of times. Blower motor ceasing up causing the fan speed resistor block to blow out. Driver's side window winder motor quiting. Both of those I've had success bringing them back to life by tearing the motors apart and cleaning them out but it's easier to just replace them. I took them apart to see if I could even though they aren't made to be taken apart. Thye're made to be thrown out and replaced. I've had the radiator replaced and bypassed the transmission/radiator deadly mix potential. (That's probably the reason so few Xterras are on the road now after suffering deadly mixing of fluids) Brake calipers ceasing up. Rear springs breaking, mainly from hauling a trailer over very rough roads. I don't put it in 4wheel drive much, but when it's in 4x4 mode, it's a beast at moving around. Dialing in and out of 4x4 mode you have to watch the dash to make sure it is in or out of 4x4 mode because just turning the dial doesn't always make it happen right away, it may take 2 or 3 attempts. Changing the sparkplugs is a real pain as you have to take way more of the top of the engine covering components off than you really should have to just to do a simple job like that. A "bearing" split in the steering column that is non replaceable so you end up getting an entire steering assembly just because of a simple plastic bearing case breaking... in that situation the entire steering column becomes loose/wobbling but still works. Things I especially like are the way the rear seats can fold flat so I have a large open storage area in the back. I like the roof rack for carrying a canoe. I have a 3000lb trailer and the Xterra hauls it around very nicely on the highway and the shortish wheelbase on the Xterra I find helps manouver the trailer around easily. There's very good visibilty all around as you're driving. Gas mileage could be a bit better, but as long as I'm around 60mph on the highway it's OK gas mileage. Having a heavy foot and accelerating quickly is fun but you really pay for it when you go to the pumps if you drive like that with the Xterra. Mine is a 2006 and it still has most of the original exhaust. Motor still runs great. Burns maybe a quart of oil between changes but that's expected.
Pro: torque, visibility, turning radius, interior and exterior storage, compact size, value for money, available lifts and mods, fully boxed frame, best looks of suv when done right Cons: badge says Nissan and not toyota so gets no love
Badge says Nissan, so it's not overpriced like a Toyota... I had a Pathfinder and loved it, but a flood ruined it. I have a Tundra and Tacoma and love them, but the Tacoma frame is rusted.
We've had our 2015 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X for going on 3 years and we absolutely love it. We've never had a single problem with it and it handles amazingly well in the snow. Ours came fully loaded with the heated leather seats, navigation, backup camera, Sirius/XM radio, Bluetooth, towing package, the whole nine. We just hit 100k miles on it and it's going in for a tune up next week. This is, hands down, the best SUV we've ever owned. Prior to buying our Xterra, we had a 2010 Jeep Commander Limited that we bought new, which we loved, but it was starting to have a few issues by the time we traded it for our Xterra. I would buy another Xterra in a heartbeat, although we are currently looking for a slightly older Titan or Frontier to have as kind of a "work truck" for hauling materials when we're doing projects on our house and things of that nature. Plus, my husband would love to have another pickup. It's been about 8 or 9 years since we last had one.
There's a cargo organizer that Nissan makes that integrates to the tie down tracks in the back. It works great for groceries! I hated that my stuff would slide around when I got my Xterra. That organizer took care of that!
I bought a 08 with 120k for $5k. I didn’t buy the 4 runner because it was 3X the price. The 4 runner might be 10% better, maybe 20% but 150% better? I don’t think so.
Pro-4x if using it for off-road and 4x4, many better choices over the standard 4x4 model. Looking diff, down hill decent, skid plates, Rockford Fosgate system, etc. Had my 2011 for 10 years, no issues, plenty of power. BF all terrain tires. Decades of off-road experience in the mountains and National Forest. Also Made in TN
I currently own a 2011 xterra pro4 x it has 114,000 miles this has been an awesome vehicle. I live in Tennessee and about 6 years ago we got about 10 inches of snow everyone else was at a stand still but I kept on going.
I was in the market for that same group of rugged off road SUVs that you mentioned. I wanted to pay cash and wanted something preferably low mileage and one owner. Stumbled across a clean Xterra that fit that criteria before finding any of the others. 2 years and 60k more miles (140k total) later, I have not been nice to it, I haven’t let it take a break, I have beaten it down, bruised it, and it has never ever failed me. It lived the first half of its mileage with an older couple who serviced it meticulously, and is spending the rest of it with me. Given the deals you can get on these I can’t see why you’d pick any of the others over it. One of my good friends has a 2020 T4R TRD Pro, fantastic rig, super nice, but it’s kind of anemic. I feel the Jeep is the same way. The 4.0 in the Nissan is no joke. Yeah it was around for 15 years but it’s got one hell of a punch for what it is.
The Xterra, particularly the first generation (2000-2004) was minimalist, rugged, dependable, and (compared to the 4-Runner) affordable. Nissan dealers were pissed off there were almost no dealer-installed options, but it saved the company at the time.
in Calgary, Canada, i ll only choose Xterra OR Sequoia, why = upto 25 cms on snow in a day, windchill upto -23 D C ( -13F), both starts in first crank and crushes heap of snow on M+S rated tires. My Xterra had BFGoodrich Ko2, and my Sequoia has Falken Wildpeak AT3.
I might be in the market for an Xterra. A manual transmission is non-negotiable for me. The last time 4runner had one was in 2000, so immediately 4runner is out of the game. I would not trust the reliability of a Jeep, so that leaves the Xterra.
I HAVE A NISSAN XTERRA 2012 , ENGINE DIÉSEL 2.5L 5 SPEED MANUAL , THE BEST SUV I EVER HAVE , I BUYED IN NISSAN COLOMBIA NEW BRAND , AND IN 9 YEARS WORKS LIKE NEW.
V8's optional on pathfinder's only. People have swapped 5.6 on xterra's i thank motor mounts fit same place. By the way i own A 07 love it to. Just have to fit separate trans cooler to protect. Transmission ☺
We have a 2010 Off Road Xterra . Too many things to list as awesome. However, the seats are hard & uncomfortable so a butt cushion is required. I'm selling my Corvette to buy another Xterra ! We use excellent tires. Good tires are ok but who wants to be just ok? The starter is definitely a dealer replacement---I could barely see it,,, let alone replace it.
About 5 years ago I bought a 2012 Pro-4X Xterra with a 6 speed manual transmission. It is the best vehicle I have ever owned. It fits me better than the alternatives, including Jeep and Toyota, and has been really reliable, only replaced the battery, a new set of tires, and I did have a thermostat go bad (simple fix). I am trying to keep mine in good shape because I like it so much and they are not made any more. I am soon to replace the shocks and will again go with the Bilstein 4600s that are stock on the Pro-4X. I have had a full size GMC pickup, an original Land Cruiser FJ40, and 3 Jeeps. (an old Wagoneer, a Cherokee, and a Liberty) in the past. The Liberty just died on me one day. It apparently dropped a valve seat out of the blue. Got rid of it then and have not considered Jeep since.
2015 pro4x. Bought it Feb 2020 for 19k w/ 74k miles and a certified pre owned 100k warranty. Best vehicle I have ever owned. It is currently Aug 2021, and the prices for these are up right now. Saw a 2015 pro4x w/78k miles listed at dealership for 33k.......it is insane. The only drawback, it doesn't have the huge aftermarket support like jeep and Toyota. There are more aftermarket components available for the "crack whore" FJ, than the xterra.
Just make sure the timing chain tensioners and radiator was replaced/and or do the bypass, and you have a reliable vehicle, that’s a lot cheaper than a 4Runner of the similar era. Though I’d take a 4Runner. Have a 2008 Pathfinder with 178k.
It depends on the price. If it's mostly highway miles and the previous owner kept up with all of the oil changes, it should still have plenty of life left in it. Our 2015 Xterra Pro-4X just hit 100k miles this week and it still runs like a dream.
✋Proud owner of Xterra! It's unique!falling in love with it again and again! happy to watch your video(from UAE) When comparing with other same class SUVs:- Better visibility from cabin Tough design(interior and exterior) Affordable Unbeatable power Simple operation Eventhough Leaf springs -it has its own advantage (tow Not So bulky-truely rugged! Regular maintenance can give it life for long years.....
Another proud Xterra owner here. We have the 2015 Pro-4X and it's the best SUV we've ever owned! We've had it for almost 3 years now and we still love it just as much (if not more) as the day we brought it home from the dealership.
I'm 6'5 and this is very true I always hit my head in 4 runners. Love my 04 xterra. I got it with 151,000 on it 4x4 for $3200 bucks. Now has 200,000 and running strong. For the price of a similar 4runner I could swap the engine, trans, and everything else and it'd still be cheaper.
I'm the 2nd owner of a 2006 4x4 6speed(stick under 100k)same color as yours(blue). I lifted my X with wheels, tires, roof basket, gobi ladder, leds up front, ect. It's like driving a big gocart. I love my X. But I do drive my 2010 2wd lowered tundra 5.7 with 103k on it alot more. I'm 50yrs. old and don't think I'll ever sell them.
I purchased an Xterra because of price. After 5 years of building it, I can honestly say I believe a 4Runner or Jeep is a more capable vehicle off-road. But I love my Xterra and is still a very capable rig.
@@RagingBad IMO, better because more updated off-road features such as A-TRAC (more aggressive than Xterra's ABLS), crawl control, and multi terrain select. I like that it has coil springs in the rear, rather than leaf, which improves wheel travel. I honestly don't think the side clearance for the Xterra is that good. I'm lifted 3 inches on 33's, and I still feel like other trucks with same setup have much better clearance.
been cross shopping these 2. I like the 4runner cause of the rear window rolls down. I like the Xterra cause its cheaper. If the rear window popped open I would jump on it. LOL Some times its the simple stuff.
i rather have xterra and is simple as that toyota 4runner is not have enough power on ther 3.3 L engine same thing with the jeep the suspension is to hard that why i got a 2006 Nissan Xterra i bought it when it was 180,000 miles on it and it now have 349,000 miles on it as it is 4x4 as well AWD mode too that motor will pull is already been tested it got original motor and transmission very strong and it got so much stability and it is blue color like us video my xterra is been driving from coast to coast all way to New York i honestly recommend other people’s to buy one ther will be pretty please with it just won’t die
Fix It Again Tony made Jeeps are rolling jokes on wheels ! In relaibility perspective they’re not even close to 4Runner,and way behind Xterra. Price comes to count to. For one FIAT you’ll get 2 Xterras. I would preffer 4Runner,but i needed 2 vehicles for me and my wife,so for the price of Toyota i’ve got 2 Xterras. I drive the simple X model, she’s got the pimped up PRO4-X.
4 runners n 1st gens Xterra r really reliable in 05 n newer Fiat turned it around alot n 2005 n newer u got more common problems n they also been recalled for a transmission problems
I'll type ya' a thing or three that nobody cares about. Last summer (June 2020) I found a 2015 Xterra Pro-4x (automatic) with less than 30,000 miles on it. I noticed it had been sitting on the lot for damn near 2 months, however, it was RIGHT in the middle of COVID. It had been lifted, tinted windows, steel front and rear bumpers, rear spare tire carrier, I'm guessing it was sitting on 33's. It was for sale at a Subaru dealership for $25,000. CarFax was clean, though I've subsequently learned that CarFax doesn't mean dick. Test drove it. Fell in love. This seemed like I was (for all intents and purposes) getting a 'new' vehicle for $25,000. Dealer insisted I leave a deposit, before even discussing price. I had scheduled to have a Nissan dealership do a pre-purchase inspection. Before the inspection could be done, the dealership called to tell me that they had sold the vehicle online to someone in Houston, TX. Sounded like bullshit. They refunded my deposit. "So what?" Ended up buying a stock 2012 Pathfinder in July 2020 with 135,000 (what appears to be highway) miles on it, for about 1/3 of what I would have spent on the Xterra. There is no "off-roading" to speak of in the state where I live. I just like a rugged-looking mall crawler. So far, I LOVE the Pathfinder. Even though I would most likely never use them, it would be great if Nissan still sold a truck in North America that had locking differentials, skid plates, crawl control, etc.....................for those high curbs at Starbucks. If "money was no object" (which it always is for working-class people), I would have wanted a Toyota Sequoia, only because I had rented one for a long weekend and loved EVERYTHING about it, including its powerful V-8. That being typed, I think that Nissan Xterra's, R51 Pathfinder's, and Armada's are great values in vehicles. Nissan's VQ series engines can compete with any non-exotic and while Toyota is king in terms of the combination of reliability, durability, and off-road prowess, Nissan's trucks are a great alternative for avoiding the 'Toyota tax.' I like the look of Jeep Wrangler's and recent Grand Cherokee's however, whenever I read any "owner reviews", Jeep's quality control seems too inconsistent for my money. Also, I am a HUGE fan of the 'old-school'~'dated' interiors, analog guages, etc. in those 2012-2015 vintage Xterra's, Pathfinder's, Armada's, 4Runner's, and Sequoia's.
How many miles? I’m currently looking into possibly getting one. This year stood out because you don’t have to worry about the radiator and transmission fluid mixing.
@@michaelknight8243 I’m looking at two. First one is a 2004 with 81k for 4,990 and a 2011 Pro-4X with 146k for 7,995. I’ve been doing a bit of research but still unsure about either one. Penny for your thoughts!?!
I own both a 2005 xterra off-road RWD (yeah I know not ideal) and a 1995 4Runner SR5 4x4. I also used to own a 1999 Tacoma SST. So I have experience owning them and being a mechanic working on them. So this what I found through my experiences over the years: Jeep: rugged looks, ok interior but bad reliability. (Very, very bad) there saving grace is they are light so off road wise is an ok choice. Toyota: tighter interior, car like almost. Most reliable option. So rugged external looks but interior can be lacking. Nissan: the jack of all trades. Ok durability inside and out. Mostly reliable (there was a few that gave some problems to my customers). But overall awesome choice. Mitsubishi: good choice but not quite as reliable as the Nissans and Toyotas. There are others but these are the main overlanding / off-road I have had experience with or remember for that matter.
@@RagingBad sentra, altima, maxima, and occasionally a rogue or xterra. I generally deal with late 90's to early 2000's models. I however can't really say anything about the Titans. I have not worked with a single Titan yet interestingly.
I have both, an xterra with the offroad package and a 4 runner trd.. I will take the 4 runner any day of the week.. its just a better truck all around..
I had a 04 4runner Sport...178k miles later brake booster went to shiattt which I found Toyo knew about this issue but claimed they didnt have enough failures to enlist recalls. I mean I was doing 45 approaching Stop and noooo brakes. So I kinda lost faith in Toyo. I came back around after driving a Mustang GT a few years as a daily to looking for either a 4runner or FJ...yeahhh I still liked the Toyo's. Then I ran across a 2015 Xterra Pro4x with under 70k miles for 19k bucks. I did some digging and found absolutely no recalls on that year. I got it...like it ...had it off road on a few mild trails and gotta say it drives as good off road as it does off road. Read that it handled rough on highway...but I don't think so at all. Great handling vehicle. Gas mileage is mehhhh but its not a deal killer...added an AEM Filter to it which helped eco by almost 2 mpg more. Sooooo, I have to say its a gooood option where you dont have to pay the Toyo tax. If you want a Trail Edition 4runner , give the Pro4x X a look.
The Xterra, in no doubt is a great vehicle in terms of power, off-road capability and reliability. I understand the only pitfall is an issue with the automatic transmission when use overtime. Guy, can you highlight on that? Thanks for your review. I really enjoyed it.
thank you Anthony! I'll will be doing a second review. We just purchased a 4runner thats pretty close to the same year as this Xterra so I plan to do a versus review one day this week. Thanks for your feedback and I will mention what you said in the video. Chad
The issue is with the automatic transmission cooler located in the radiator. On the earlier models, coolant and transmission fluid would mix due to a faulty radiator. This wa later fixed by an updated radiator. I have a 2015 Xterra Pro4X awesome trucks.
My xterra had that issue aka SMOD. It happened around 100k on mine, did a complete flush, replaced radiator and 5yr & 100k miles later (210k now) the xterra drives perfect. Mine is a 2005.
Still love my 2014 xterra. Drive like solid and tough and with proper maintenance ,this vehicle never leaves me in the dark....Greetings from Alberta!

I'm looking to buy an off road model. It is the cheapest 4x4 with a rear locker. I'm going to build an overlanding rig.
Love my xterra, Titan swapped it and V8 swapped it as well.
How hard were the swaps? Straight swap or a lot of custom work?
@@newunderthesun7353 pretty much bolt on, minus an ecu harness from the titan. looks stock and all the things work like AC

FJs visibility sux
Just make sure the timing chain tensioners and radiator was replaced/and or do the bypass, and you have a reliable vehicle, that’s a lot cheaper than a 4Runner of the similar era. Though I’d take a 4Runner. Have a 2008 Pathfinder with 178k.
9:25 I never knew that!!!! Wow that's amazing that Nissan offers that storage area! I thought it was just for looks lol
Not all Xterras have that, I think only the Off-Road and Pro-X 4 have the locking storage feature.
I love my Xterra!
Would it be worth it buying a 2010 Xterra with 214k on it? The frame looks great on it. Also apparently it’s been highway driven only.
It depends on the price. If it's mostly highway miles and the previous owner kept up with all of the oil changes, it should still have plenty of life left in it. Our 2015 Xterra Pro-4X just hit 100k miles this week and it still runs like a dream.
Sir how much can we buy a used car just like that????
✋Proud owner of Xterra! It's unique!falling in love with it again and again! happy to watch your video(from UAE)
When comparing with other same class SUVs:-
Better visibility from cabin
Tough design(interior and exterior)
Affordable
Unbeatable power
Simple operation
Eventhough Leaf springs -it has its own advantage (tow
Not So bulky-truely rugged!
Regular maintenance can give it life for long years.....
Another proud Xterra owner here. We have the 2015 Pro-4X and it's the best SUV we've ever owned! We've had it for almost 3 years now and we still love it just as much (if not more) as the day we brought it home from the dealership.
xterra seating position is more upright than 4runner and more accomodating to talller drivers
good to know. thanks for sharing Scott!
Hey Scott, we just got a 4Runner that's similar year to the Xterra. I'll mention what you said in the new video when I film it this week. Thanks, Chad
Facts man..im 6ft 280lbs 4runner feels like its leaning the driver seat
@5:50 u mean 4400lbs
What kind of transmission does the 2013-2015 xterra have?
They come with 5 speed autos and 6 speed manuals it just depends which model you get. No CVT.
@@xxboxofmuffinsxx4252 good thing hahaha
I'm the 2nd owner of a 2006 4x4 6speed(stick under 100k)same color as yours(blue). I lifted my X with wheels, tires, roof basket, gobi ladder, leds up front, ect. It's like driving a big gocart. I love my X. But I do drive my 2010 2wd lowered tundra 5.7 with 103k on it alot more. I'm 50yrs. old and don't think I'll ever sell them.
How reliable is the Nissan?
@@RagingBad ????? It's a 15 year old "X" only had to replace front window motors. It runs like a "Bat out of hell"! My X was built on a good day.
I purchased an Xterra because of price. After 5 years of building it, I can honestly say I believe a 4Runner or Jeep is a more capable vehicle off-road. But I love my Xterra and is still a very capable rig.
Why is the 4Runner more capable?
4th gen 4Runner started in 2003 - 2009 5th gen/current gen started in 2010 to present.
I love my 1 gen xterra
I love 4wd car too sir
i rather have xterra and is simple as that toyota 4runner is not have enough power on ther 3.3 L engine same thing with the jeep the suspension is to hard that why i got a 2006 Nissan Xterra i bought it when it was 180,000 miles on it and it now have 349,000 miles on it as it is 4x4 as well AWD mode too that motor will pull is already been tested it got original motor and transmission very strong and it got so much stability and it is blue color like us video my xterra is been driving from coast to coast all way to New York i honestly recommend other people’s to buy one ther will be pretty please with it just won’t die
Right?
Fix It Again Tony made Jeeps are rolling jokes on wheels !
In relaibility perspective they’re not even close to 4Runner,and way behind Xterra. Price comes to count to. For one FIAT you’ll get 2 Xterras.
I would preffer 4Runner,but i needed 2 vehicles for me and my wife,so for the price of Toyota i’ve got 2 Xterras. I drive the simple X model, she’s got the pimped up PRO4-X.
2010 Nissan Xterra?
I own a 2000 XE & a 2015 Pro4X. Nuff said.
How reliable are they?
@@RagingBad Hi ! I've had to do nothing but regular maintenance on mine. My 2000 XE has 221,000 miles
Jeeps are a rip off. Toyotas are over priced
4 runners n 1st gens Xterra r really reliable in 05 n newer Fiat turned it around alot n 2005 n newer u got more common problems n they also been recalled for a transmission problems
For the 2nd gen xterra Swap out the 2 in 1 radiator/trans cooler for 2 separate ones and you wont have any trans problems 👌🏼
"So what?"
Ended up buying a stock 2012 Pathfinder in July 2020 with 135,000 (what appears to be highway) miles on it, for about 1/3 of what I would have spent on the Xterra.
Nissan's VQ series engines can compete with any non-exotic and while Toyota is king in terms of the combination of reliability, durability, and off-road prowess, Nissan's trucks are a great alternative for avoiding the 'Toyota tax.'
I like the look of Jeep Wrangler's and recent Grand Cherokee's however, whenever I read any "owner reviews", Jeep's quality control seems too inconsistent for my money. Also, I am a HUGE fan of the 'old-school'~'dated' interiors, analog guages, etc. in those 2012-2015 vintage Xterra's, Pathfinder's, Armada's, 4Runner's, and Sequoia's.
No V8 from the factory but the 5.4 liter titan motor is a bolt in
5.6
LOVED my Xterra for the 9 years of its existence on this planet before the dreaded strawberry milkshake took it away from me way too soon.
xterra 2011 💥
Am I watching the Car Home Shopping Network???
I got a 2011 pro 4x love it
How many miles? I’m currently looking into possibly getting one. This year stood out because you don’t have to worry about the radiator and transmission fluid mixing.
@@adrianb1655 any year after 2010 they fixed that. Mine has 53k
@@michaelknight8243 awesome, hey thanks for the response!
@@adrianb1655 wish they still made them I would get another one my first was an 2002 I put over 300k on it
@@michaelknight8243 I’m looking at two.
So this what I found through my experiences over the years:
Jeep: rugged looks, ok interior but bad reliability.
When you say Nissans what models are you referring to?
@@RagingBad sentra, altima, maxima, and occasionally a rogue or xterra. I generally deal with late 90's to early 2000's models. I however can't really say anything about the Titans. I have not worked with a single Titan yet interestingly.
@@RagingBad but for overlanding I was referring to frontiers and xterras since I have experience with those often.

HAHA Looks like my driveway, I own an Xterra and a Fiat 500.
He lost me when he called it a car. Lol just kidding. Love the xterra.
😁 my wife makes fun of me when I call it a truck. But I know the truth
@@ryanchan6590 on which year was this issue solved?
@@RagingBad I believe it was solved with the 2009 or 2010 models. Google SMOD years for Xterra.
