Your support is appreciated!
If you have a Defender/Tdi problem and do not know how to fix it, drop me a line! Maybe I can help!

That was especially interesting, Mike. Very nice to watch and I'll be waiting for the rebuild!
Thanks Mike. Now that Chris Higgins' Land Rover Toolbox Videos is taking a kind of sabbatical (for reasons I totally understand and support by the way) you are definitely the premier older Land Rover maintenance / repair guru!
Not bad for 9 months on RUclips
Mike!
Interesting watch 😎 always room in my heart for an old Landy
You were right about the first collar to come off it was f/in tight without the correct tool there was a bit of machining and lot of welding to get it off
Do not hammer it on - press it back on using the thread on the shaft
R380 = rated for 380Nm input (280 pound feet force)
LT77 = British Leyland 77mm shaft spacing (distance between lay shaft and main shaft)
Type A gearbox prefixes: - 50A; 51A; 56A; 58A; 60A; 61A; 66A; 68A; 70A; 74A (Long Stick - Defender R380)
Type B gearbox prefixes: - 53A; 55A; 63A; 67A; 69A; 73A (short Stick - Discovery R380)
Type C gearbox prefix: - 18A
Type D gearbox prefixes: - 64A; 65A
The letter at the end of the serial number is the series type. Most R380s are J series but there are some K and L out there.
Advice: once you can read your gear box serial number WRITE IT DOWN and save it.
Good info
IF you have a box with an odd number that does not match any of the above, then it is probably an Ashcroft box - drop them a line, and they will tell you what it is
Hi 👋 guy with the lurching discovery here. Got my R380 on the bench and going to strip it down, replace 5th for the lower gear, sort the whining bearing and make it better with your videos! Thank you!
Well done Jack!
Hi again, I’ve come to a stop with it... I can’t get the nut off of 5th with my breaker bar and 32mm socket and haven’t got an impact gun. Basically when I put the rag though it either ends up going through the gears or twisting the whole gear box 😩
Mike is Saint of Mechanics ;)
Good video mike
Hi, your videos encuraged me to open my old R380 of my dicovery 2 to renew it.
I found that the syncro body up and the sellector ring of the 5th/reverse with the with five notches is facing the reverse syncro and gear wheel, i've tried to find free movement setting when the five notches facing the 5th gear wheel and it didn't match.
It works good only when the notches towards the reverse.
1st and 3rd notches are okay.
What's your opinion please?
Thanks for responding
I have seen this before - the hubs bed in and do not like being swapped over - but the inner hub needs to be in the right direction - if it was working OK in the past - then leave it be
@@BritannicaRestorations ok , thanks 👍
Your a genius !!! Thanks for sharing, I'm enjoying your videos 👍
Great!
Mike
great overview! would you add a strip down and rebuild of the LT230 to your queue? I've got a spare waiting for some love
Probably a winter project - I have boxes here but not much time at the moment
Mike
I have a gearbox that I'm going to strip after watching your video, question I have is what puller are you using and do you have a part number for it.
Cheers Craig

Not cheap, and you need the adaptors too!

@@BritannicaRestorations thank you ever so much, I've been given a gearbox for nothing so I'm going to try that first.
Cheers Craig

Thank you. I enjoyed watching this video What oil is suitable for the P380
I use regular ATF
Hi there. Great videos very useful! Would you mind telling me what make/what type of puller you use dismantling this box? I can’t find anything like it anywhere. Cheers James (uk)

You are the best. Thank for your videos
Thanks Joe!
Mike
I just need to no where can i find that puller
Another great video as always Mike. Can I pick your brains for a moment? I heard a grinding/loose metal sound yesterday coming from the clutch/gearbox area. I've been poking round today and it seems to only happens when under load, so I'm thinking of ruling out the clutch.
Although it drives fine, I'm understandably concerned. After watching your video I'm pretty sure I don't fancy trying to rebuild a gearbox.
Any suggestions to check before I take it to the local mechanics (who I don't have any faith in sadly) and consider buying a refurbished box.
It could be a clutch bearing on the way out Nick. Hard to tell without seeing it
@@BritannicaRestorations thanks Mike, I'll keep investigating. The clutch was replaced last year so it shouldn't be an issue unless I didn't install it correctly (not ruling anything out)
So hard to say - what box is it?
@@BritannicaRestorations r380/lt230, I thought about checking the drain plug for particles/bearings
I did a video this year on flushing an R380 - made a world of difference!
I really don't think you'd get that collar off the output shaft with a three legged puller. I used a press, but it was very difficult. I wish I'd had that tool you've got.
That tool was f*cking expensive BUT as I have done many boxes over 20 years it have been worth it
I would like to know if I can put a manual gearbox from a 2003 discovery v8 in a TD5 of the same year?
Mike, I’ve got oil leaking out of the rear most threaded hole on the bottom of the extension housing (there’s 3 M8 holes in a triangle formation), have you ever experienced this? Thanks
Nope - sounds like someone has fitted a too long bolt and cracked the casting!
@@BritannicaRestorations Okay thanks Mike. I’ve had all sorts of theories like oil wearing the inside of the casing to there being internal pilot bores that are routed in such a way to indicate a leaky seal.
Your diagnoses makes much more sense because it happened very suddenly, no signs of weeping to suddenly a fairly major leak. Thanks for your help.
That 3 bolt mounting is for the adaptor for a gearbox lift - so you can balance the gearbox and transfer case when taking it out
@@BritannicaRestorations yea, just 3 blind M8 holes in the casing! I’ve plugged it with a bolt and copper washer, see how we go. Thanks again.
hi Mike can i pick your brains for a second I was driving my discovery today all was well. I was in fifth gear driving along I slowed down and went down the gears to turn at a junction and when I went to speed up thro the gears I had no 5th it's now like it in natural and I have also no reverse now. any idea what it could be and how to fix. thank you.
Ha! Simple one - you have broken the lay-shaft in the gearbox
First 4 gears uninfected, but in the aluminum housing at the back of the box sits the 5th/reverse - the shaft has sheared off just behind the bearing on the bottom shaft
Bet you £1000!
Gearbox needs a rebuild and and new lay-shaft - no other fix - sorry
@@BritannicaRestorations that's not good looks like I'll be looking for a second hand box thank you for your reply I really appreciate it.
Hey Mike, would it be possible to do some still close up pictures of what would be acceptable wear on gears and synchro's and what would be in your experience too much wear and would need replacing. Cheers
Yeap - look out soon before I out this box back together
cheers many thanks
Thanks 👍🇲🇹
No problem 👍
hi and thanks for the video again!! In your opinion is it possible to change to Prime Motion shaft bearing during an engine out clutch change (as have some noise in neutral with clutch not engaged) without removing the R380??? Thanks if you get tiume to reply
I had to think about this! Technically maybe, practically no. I have difficulty getting the bearing off the shaft in the vice, so in the box would require some advanced skill
Also when fitting new bearings the box would need reshimming
It is common for the R380 to chatter - it seems to be the clutch plate springs that are the culprit
Mike
@@BritannicaRestorations Thanks alot - keep up the good work!!
What oil did this one have in it, Mike? Would it be manual gear 80 or something? I prefer ATF in these.
ATF but there is a better oil for hotter climates I was told
Ashcroft's recommend ATF
Mike
What do you mean put the wrong corrasponing gear in mate
RoversNorth prices are absurd. Britcar is who I go with.
Which is why they are nick named Robbers North......
That’s hilarious. RoversNorth $6. Britcar 20 cents.
Hello mike
What happens if the filter is full in such way that it stops the oil ?
Can it happens ?
Is it possible to ad external filter using the coolant dérivation ?
Where did you get the puller kit from? Any reference number you could share?

Non cela ne fonctionne pas
thank you for this very instructional video.. I wish the reassembly was available as well !! About the oil that's recommencded by LR, ain't it MTF instead of ATF??
ATF is recommended by Ashcroft's
ATF allows foe less synchro grinding...
