What's your biggest struggle on your minimalist journey?

    • @roseeze166
      @roseeze166 5 месяцев назад +4

Im not sure if this is related to minimalism but biggest challenge is spending less time watching RUclips videos but CREATING RUclips videos.
There is so much to learn like where to find slides and footage for my content, different forms of editing. It's a learning curve that's so exhausting, I want to give up and many of the so called courses are exorbitant and a rip off. Who wants to pay $500 for a course just to learn the answer was ALT-CTRL-DELETE.😂

I caught myself going “wow, Gabe is kinda beyond this kind of content now.” But then I remembered that not everyone is at the point in progression that he and a lot of his followers are. Good job throwing a beginner video out there again to bring others along that are at the beginning of it all… when they realize something has to change… but what? And how?

Yeah it's not enough to accept something intellectually. The ideas have to take up residence in your brain, so that you remember to apply them to your own behavior. Through repetition over time, both the ideas and the behaviors become habits.

I copied a money mantra from Martin Lewis, a famous UK financial guru. If I'm skint: Do I need it? Can I afford it? If I'm not skint: Will I use it? Is it worth it? If the answer is NO to any of these questions then I don't buy. One big change for me this year has been that I've started using my local library. I realised that most books get read once and that's it; they then get donated or sold off for pennies in the pound. The library even has an app, so if I see an ad for a book I'm interested in, or a youtuber talks about something I may like, I can just reserve the book on my phone. It may take a few weeks to arrive but that's no problem, I'm less impatient as I've got older.

I use my natural pessimism to my advantage, think about what a nuisance owning that item is gonna be: cost, maintenance, limited warranty, finding a home for it, how guilty I'll feel if I end up not using it very much, what a pain it'll be trying to sell/donate/trash it, how little it'll fetch second hand etc. If after a few days I've overcome most of those objections, then it's probably worthwhile.

Whenever I have the urge for a spending spree, I love investing money in the stock market! Investing $1 into an index fund gives me the same dopamine high that buying something I don't need would. Plus I know that $1 is going to grow with time, and it's satisfying to see my account grow over time 😊

I would never say that I've been terrible with money. But when I really wanted something I'd buy it without fail. The real pitfall for me wasn't buying big things, but rather buying stupid little things that add up over time. I really have to credit Minority Mindset with changing how I think of money nearly entirely. I'm now far further in the right direction with my money than ever before. Find a good reason to save money (your future, your spouse, your children, whatever gets the cogs spinning). For me its working towards financial freedom

Nailed it. Those are the best tips for buying things or avoiding it. I use the Amazon wish list and wait to buy things off it for 30 days or more. I update the list before birthday and Christmas and if I still want something I may get it as a gift for myself or friends and family. My buying decision is if I don't have a product and it will significantly improve my life. Or if I have a product will the new product be significantly better/ cheaper and the same quality or the same price but much better. If it doesn't meet those criteria I don't buy it. For consumables I try to find the cheapest item at the cheapest place that meets my needs and use that. If it doesn't work out I go up in price and/or quality and keep dong that until I am satisfied. This may mean the Dollar store, Costco or name brand product from a regular store for toilet paper, cleaning supplies, soap, razors etc... Once I find what works for the value I stick with it.

One thing that worked for me more than the thirty day rule was just buying whatever I wanted with no internal argument. But when I got home, I would leave it in the shopping bag. That way, there’s no nagging feeling that it will sell out or that the price will go up. I leave it there until I’m sure it’s a need or a meaningful want. And if I’m not in love with it, I take it back and get the same shopper’s rush from getting my money back as I got making the purchase. I have the discipline to return things, and I found that it made shopping as well as NOT shopping less stressful, since much of the psychology of retail is convincing you that you’re about to miss a limited opportunity.

Food budget is the struggle right now to be honest.
I bought a huge table from Amazon that was advertised as "like new". Amazon seller refused to lower the price when it ended up being damaged. No wonder previous person returned it.
It was too heavy with ripped broken to be sent back. It upset me enough to shop only when absolutely necessary. I didn't renew Prime either. NY resolution, keep orders under 25 a year. Returning things when they are not good, takes time and energy.

But I rationalize it for these reasons, because I’m listening to stuff like this, personal growth, finances, etc, and when I do watch RUclips, with the screen locked and in my shirt pocket, it’s 9/10, a video learning how to do something. I’m very dependent on myself, borderline stubborn😂 so you guys tell me. Am I wasting my time on RUclips? Cuz I do value my time, and also my skills. And RUclips and growth kinda go hand in hand for me. But maybe I’m just rationalizing a bad habit?

Those three questions are all related:
    1. Will this save me money?
    2. Will this make me happy?
    3. Will this improve my life?
If it saves me money, it will make me happier. If it improves my life, it will make me happier. If it saves me money, it will improve my life. Ideally any significant purchase should answer at least two of those with a 'yes', if not all three.
