Nice photos! An experienced photographer with a kit lens always gets better results than a noob with a pro lens.

Worth noting that version 2 of the 12-35 f/2.8 is both splash and freeze proof; with the G9 and up it also allows for linear manual focus, making it much more usable for the videography thing. Not sure how many folks need any of that, but I really enjoy the lens.

I love my 12-32. I bought it with a very specific role in mind: it lets me stick my camera in my jacket pocket so I have it on walks where I don't want to bring a bag. The addition of a third-party automatic lens cap makes it fast to get out and fast to put away.

    • @ssthapit

Exact reason I got it. What is the 3rd party automatic lens cap you use? Do you recommend it? Thanks.

@@ssthapit It's from JJC. I had to enlarge the opening a bit to reduce vignetting at 12mm. I'm content, but not enthusiastic about it. Olympus makes one that's probably better quality, but it's ridiculously expensive at $35ish for what it is.

Ive got thousands of pounds worth of PRO lenses all the way from F1.2 - F2.8 for when I work professional jobs. But some of the best images I have ever achieved has been with the 14-140 v2 + Panasonic G9 in Bangladesh this year ... every image, I was blown away by. Best travel set up.

  • @JensMHA

I have both of them, the 12-32 combined with its 35-100 sibling makes for an extremely light travelling kit with something like the GX80 or 9. I bought them when I got into the M43 system along with the GX7 and much for the reason of size and lack of weight. Added a Oly 17 F/1.8 for indoors use, and it makes for a splendid, casual travelling kit if flying places or great outdoors stuff. Weighing in at under a kilo along with a spare battery and the battery charger. The only "stupid" thing with it, is its 37mm filter tread, they could have made it a 46mm like its sibling and the Oly. :-) The 12-35mm is a classic in the system and is what I use for "work", when out and about with photography in mind, but it tends to be on the camera for the most of the time. Fancy picking up the 35-100 F/2.8 for a light(ish) classic job set with F/2.8. Carrying the G9 plus the two F/2.8s are less than half the weight of a similiar line-up with my former Canon system, with F/2.8s , as well as half of the price or thereabouts.

I used to own the 12-32 G lens only because it was super cheap and it was kind of an experiment to know the image quality more. I used it often, but the zoom ring actually came unattached. And once that happened, it continued to do so here and there.
Users should also keep in mind that there are two versions of this lens. One has plastic mount and the other is metal. This may not make a difference to some, but depending on the amount of taking on/off, that might be an issue in the long run.
GREAT video. Thanks for chatting about both of these lenses.

The tiny 12-32mm G lens is a really handy walkabout lens, it barely weighs anything yet has such a useful focal range. One point to look out for when buying is some have a plastic lens mount while other copies have a metal mount. I searched through a selection in stock on MPB to find one secondhand one with a metal mount. Also the lens will focus manually, but via the 'D-pad' cursor on the back of the camera. With peaking turned on, it's actually very quick and accurate to focus this way.

I spent the past week testing all the lenses i own for M43 and checking the opticallimits page.
    (M.Zuiko 12-40mm F2.8, 45mm f1,8, 75mm f1.8, 14-42mm EZ, Lumix GX 35-100 F2.8 and Leica DG Summilux 25mm F1,4)
    1. I am really curious to try 12-32mm on my M5MkIII. My 14-42mm Ez suffers from chromatic aberration on wide to standard focal range. However 12-32 is not available for standalone purchase here.
    2. Certain lenses can be used without much impact on both Olympus and Lumix bodies.
Some lenses work well on both systems because they dont require in-body correction. This applies for chromatic aberration and distortion. If those are low or you can switch the lens to body of any manufacturer. Lumix G X 35-100 F2.8 is a great example of this.
    3. HiRes mode can be used for sharpness tests.
Tripod, remote shutter and subject like a wooden statue can reveal which lens is really sharper.

The Olympus 14-42mm II R lens is great in the middle and fairly good to the edge. I use the 12-32mm Lumix kit lens on my Olympus PL-8 all the time now -- and of course it works fine on my GX85 Lumix. As for the Olympus 14-42 R II lens, I got that with the PL-8 from Adorama in USA. For $280 US dollars, you now get a PL-8 and lens, on a super close-out deal ( looks like a white camera ) I got a black and silver earlier for $349. The Lumix 12-32mm came in a package deal with the GX85. It is low cost, China lens, with plastic mount, but is sharp across and pretty nice color rendering in a low cost lens. -Loren lorenschwiderski.smugmug.com/

The 12-32 G takes very nice photos. It is exactly as you said, I use it on holiday. It came with my GX80. Already I had the Pany 14-42 PZ that I used with my previous GX7. The PZ also takes great photos (an underrated lens) but i sold it and kept the 12-32 because it is a manual zoom and I liked having the 12mm. Also the 12-32 takes advantage of Dual-IS on the GX80.
I never thought about the 12-35 X because it costs a lot and is big. If I were to go that big I think the 14-140mm would be a better choice for me. It is nice to have the constant f2.8 of the 12-35 X but for my holiday photos, hopefully the sun is out so f3.5-f5.6 is ok.

I have 12-35 since 2012 or 2013 and I think it's no longer necessary. I never liked 14-45mm/f3.5-5.6 (G1 kit lens) which was not very sharp on one side, IS on GF1 was not great and long end was nearly useless except sunny weather. 12-35/f2.8 is optically superior in every way, it was only somewhat big and heavy for GF1 and it was flawless on G5. But in 2017 i upgraded to G80 which came with IBIS and 12-60/f3.5-5.6 lens for little extra money. To my suprise 12-60 is optically as good as 12-35, size is the same, it weights 100g less, I feel it has better IS so taking hand held wide angle photos in low light is maybe even better with this lens and when I want low aperture, I use prime lenses anyways.

Interesting. If you have the opportunity to use a Nikon D3500 with a kit 18-55mm, or better yet the 50mm prime ( low price lens ), take some shots and let me know what ya think. So far where my mirrorless MFT cameras have beaten my Nikon is in focusing -- quick focus on the street is not so good with the Nikon. For landscapes, and general photography, both MFT ( Oly. & Panasonic ) do render some good color, and sort of film like qualities, but I would not say overall a better image or dynamic range. For run and gun, fast shooting, I do like MFT. If the Nikon had the focus points and quick to lock focus of a MFT, it would match it on street shooting too, though it is nice to see the preview image before the snap. Preview is not that swift on the DSLR -- don't use it. For small, light and great grip, the Nikon D3500 has it. But I am going all in on mirrorless going forward.

I haven't used either of those lenses but try comparing out of focus areas or Bokeh, one of weakness in kit lenses at widest apertures. Normally, they are optimised for one aperture values, like f8 in apsc cameras. (I shoot apsc). Bokeh looks hazy, undefined, taking away the impact from the pictures.
Result is you make much more beautiful pictures in any circumstances or settings on pro lenses. But yes, if you want everything in focus, kit lenses are good enough.

The Lumix 12-32mm lens has a very good universal reputation as a sharp and extremely compact zoom lens. Pretty much everyone who have used it loves it. Nice review.
    I actually have both.
The Lumix G 12-32mm f3.5-5.6 was in bundle with the Lumix GM1 I bought long ago.
    - small and compact, perfect match for the GM1 and other small, compact m43 bodies
    - good for travelling and when you don't want to carry big and heavy equipment
    - no weather sealing, limited and non-constant widest aperture when zooming
    - requires more light
The Lumix G X 12-35mm f2.8 is my preferred standard zoom lens.
    - weather sealing, better build quality, manual focus
    - fast constant widest aperture in the complete zoom range; very useful for video recording
    - perfect for indoor and other low-light situations without using a flash
    - bigger and heavier
Other than size, weight and cost; the main difference is the aperture speed.
    i.e. at 32mm you have f2.8 vs f5.6

IMHO, at this price it should be sharper to the edge, and overall perfect, but maybe I ask too much. I wonder if it ever goes down to say 40% off? It is impossible on the Internet to find a lowest price for the year on items -- darn it!
