You’d have had to see her in the live Broadway show to appreciate how well she fit the role of Tess Harding. I did, back in the ‘80’s. And I was one of those who went in to the theater thinking “she’s no singer” too. But I had to admit: she was perfect for the part-including the musical numbers . The character of Tess would have been less believable if she’d been played like a songbird. In fairness, there’ve been other non-musical stars who had roles that required some singing (Rex Harrison, anyone?) but still pulled it off. Bacall is one. And she earned her Tony award.
The creative team on "Woman of the Year" gave Bacall wonderful songs and numbers that she could perform within the limitations of her vocal range. She was a hit in "Applause" and even better in "Woman of the Year"
It wasn’t until after her death that I heard that she was “difficult to work with”. Fame will probably go to most people’s heads, some more so than others.

That is so much fun to see!! Miss Bacall was quite something on the stage and singing!!! Thanks for posting Alan!!!
She had so much class.
Beautiful woman!
Seeing Bacall in Applause and Woman of the Year is godsend for me, someone with a lower, non-belting voice.

Kander and Ebb were the masters of writing songs perfectly tailored to the talents of a sepecific performer!
That was fun! After the little mishap at the end, I pity the person she took it out on.
I thought that mop was gonna hit the conductor too, haha

Lauren Bacall = STAR⭐🌟⭐🌟⭐🌟⭐
I love the Merman story from their opening night
I know the one! I was thinking the same thing Ethel was.
How do people who can't sing get into musicals? I loved Lauren, but please. And Wayne Newton...bleh.
I agree ; Harrison and Burton could make it work but this is insufferable.
@@davidallen508 I never saw "Applause" live, but in the TV version Betty Bacall seems positively DERANGED in that one, too. And normally I like her.
LOL....2 funny😁😁
