Queer as Folk was on TV 20 years ago why does everyone in the media forget about that ground breaking show? IT was the First to depict gay life and culture honestly and openly.
I agree. But the answer is that it broke TOO MUCH ground. It was too honest and open. The media, run by cis straight people, will only ever present an image of queer life that is palatable to cis straights. We can be gay - just not TOO gay. And we mustn't have sex in any way that can not be accepted and understood as depicted through a straight lens. And as a group we must be pretty, young, and vanilla. No shameless fat old queens, please! And our relationships (and mess) must be represented in exactly the same way as straight relationships (and mess) - just with same sex couples. Nothing that challenges, questions, or broadens. Nothing that would make a vapid, narcissistic, teenage Valley girl say "Ewwwww!" Honestly, I believe we have gone backwards. That's why the straights now think queerness is old news, and that the need for PRIDE parades has passed. The media has created an "acceptable" homogenised way of representing us, and woe betide anyone who presents differently from the accepted paradigm!
I wouldn't say honestly - even the actor who played Justin said the show was more like a soap opera and unrealistic. Still had the hottest sex scenes though. 😆
The original UK version of QAF written by Russell T Davies was incredibly groundbreaking and challenging to heteronormativity, and (from my understanding) attracted a pretty broad audience, both queer and other (ok, maybe a lot of straightish women 😅). The US version seemed, to me, to be more soap opera-like and played to more niche audience. Both definitely had a role in paving the way for greater queer representation on TV.
Get him the role of Achilles & Taylor as his lover, we need more of those 2 together besides the RWRB sequel, thank this man for asking the best and most accurate questions 🙏🏻👌🏻❤️❤️
Having come out in May 1968, I must say how refreshing it is to give witness to the gay-positive films now being offered. Nicholas is simply delicious! Julianne is ravishing. Being gay is abnormal only to those who think it is. It is quite normal to the rest of us.
I can see Nick getting offers for the roles he wants very soon, maybe he already is working on some of those! I am so excited for his acting in Mary&George, he is so talented and beautiful
Sex is still being used as a weapon in this present day! What an articulate Nicholas Galitzine! He is not afraid to be typecast! I hope he doesn’t! These two are comfortable with each other!
In terms of gay stories we've forgotten Maurice with Hugh Grant, James Wilby and Rupert Graves. That came out in 1987 and it had a happy ending for the love story which was rare for a long while.
I'd love to see a story about Emperor Hadrian and his young lover, Antinous. It's a tragic love story because Antinous drowned after falling a ship when he accompanied Hadrian to Egypt. Hadrian mourned his loss deeply and named the area where he drowned after him, which still bears the same name. He also had him deified and his cult was hugely popular and widespread in ancient Rome. In fact, of all the statues discovered that depict actual historical figures, the overwhelming majority depict Antinous. When you think about it, he was histories first gay god. Anyway, I think you could tell a great story about them. Hadrian is recognised as one of Rome's best emperors. What is it about ancient Rome's actual history that makes for great storytelling?
❤great interview. Nicks attire in this clip is so attractive. He may be starting a fad. Nice see through sweater over a tank. It helps that he is buffed. The movie is phenom. Bravo👏👏👏
A curious film, partly ludicrous, partly very insightful. Once you get beyond the willy-fest, it's a tale of sharp observations on the road to power and influence - its dangers, its uncertain path, its cost. Julianne Moore is masterful as the central character, portrait of a woman pursuing her ambition in a hostile world, to be respected if not liked.
Yeah I lost a bit of respect for her when she mentioned it in this interview…. Is she not aware that among the gay community that movie is considered some of the most insulting, pathetic het drivel 😂 Not revolutionary, she should be embarrassed by her participation in it😂

I don't know how honest the portrayals actually were. We don't know what happened way back then. There's no recorded history of any of what is portrayed. And, another thing, I'm sure they didn't look all that handsome or beautiful back then either.
Tony Curran looks scarily like portraits of King James. There is only one existent portrait of Mary, in the National Portrait Gallery in London but it is very stylised fir the era. There are portraits of George. He may not look like Galitzine, but was very handsome for the period's standards.

What is Galitzine on about?! The relationship between James and George grew into something "pure and beautiful". No it didn't. It was clearly always transactional, as the series - for all its flaws (and there are many) - can't help but show. It was also all about power and exploitation. George and Many were devious, grasping nasty pieces of work. And according to the series they didn't even care much for each other. In any case, there's not much "pure and beautiful" about any of the relationships in "Mary & George". It's cynicism all the way. But maybe someone, or just Galatzine, decided that wasn't much of a selling point.
Not sure about Nick as Achilles and really don't think Taylor would be a good fit as Patroclus. Tho Antinous on the other hand, Nick is at the perfect age to portray him. The producer just needs to find the right Hadrian.
