Thanks for the posts, John. We both share a love for McCartney although I'm not always in accord with you over album ratings. One big thing I need to thank you for is the introduction to 'Wings Over America'. Normally I would never have bothered with this album as I'm no fan of live albums (Thin Lizzy's 'Live and Dangerous' being an exception). But on your say I got hold of WOA and what a revelation! It's now one of my favourites. So cheers.

Hi John I think you finally persuaded me to give this album another go. I like it! Especially "Single Pigeon" and "Little lamb dragonfly". But I still feel it doesnt have enough rockers, its a bit too soft. So having listened to all the extra tracks from the new issue, I have come up with an 'imaginary' track list of how I feel it could have been better. I know you feel "Hi Hi Hi" didnt fit, but I open the album with it, replacing "Big barn bed" as I feel its a superior song. Also, I have ejected "Loup" which I feel was a waste of space, and put in the Denny song "I would only smile". On the medly I lose "Hold me tight / Lazy dynamite" and kept the other 2 stronger tracks. I have also added "Little woman love" to liven it up, and end the album with "Live and let die", easily the best Paul song of the time:
    1/ Hi Hi Hi
    2/ My love
3/ Get on the right thing
    4/ One more kiss
    5/ Little lamb dragonfly
    6/ Little woman love
    side 2
    1/ Single Pigeon
    2/ When the night
    3/ I would only smile
4/ Hands of love / power cut
    5/ Live and let die

I haven't received my sets yet as I purchased them directly from Paul's store.Never thought that we would see an official version of the James Paul McCartney special let alone Bruce McMouse.Looking forward to the remaining Wings material next year.

You've done it again! I was quite happy with my two vinyl copies from yesteryear and original CD with the new excellent remaster and then I saw the gorgeous new vinyl edition on your video and £35 later I am also the owner of what is a wonderful release. Your videos cost me a small fortune - ha! I've always loved the medley on RRS and coming into it in the late 1970's was very pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this album, mainly due to low expectations based on views of others, George's Dark Horse (bought at same time) was similarly better then it's reputation. Another informative and balanced video - thanks

For a double album with superb packaging £35 is excellent value and well worth it. Paul continues to set the lead for others to follow including the Stones.

John a great review as usual. I use to not care for Red Rose Speedway in the years past but it really has grown on me. Being that its laid back but is very enjoyable. I'll be getting my vinyl copy of the proper album soon.

Hi John, this the first album I ever bought so I've always loved it.My original album never had the booklet stapled in (staple shortage 70s Yorkshire).I definitely think these 2 albums need re-evaluations.Side 2 of Wild life is amazing.Red rose The Mess is a neglected classic.Hope your well

The new 180 gram vinyl version of RRS looks real cool and if the remix sounds much improved then it's time to retire my 1993 copy and spring for this. Both Denny Laine and Henry McCullough do some great guitar work so well worth getting this edition. Thanks for showing and reviewing this fine album.

FitToBe TieDyed cheers Paul...I think it’s a bit more special when the slightly more obscure albums get the archive treatment...not that RRS wasn’t a huge hit at the time...but somehow the critics since have decided that that these albums are not so great...well...screw them :- )

  • @jamesgriffithsmusic

Thanks for this John. I'm think I'm going to get this though it'll have to wait as I've just splurged on the White Album Deluxe CD set. The quote I always remember from McCartney about the first couple of Wings albums comes from the mid to late 70s - 'When I first heard Wildlife I thought, 'hell we really have blown it here'. And the one after that I couldn't stand'.

I bought the "double and original" format of RRS in 180gm vinyl and played it with fervent anticipation. Honestly, the packaging immediately signals the contents and the album in this format is half-arsed. Good call by Paul to select the best for a single album which is still somewhat 'bitty' to my ears but good quality and deserving of a place in the top five or so of his non-Beatle canon... in my opinion obvs ;-).

Decided to just get the 2 cd reissue with the extras. Still waiting on it's arrival. I just don't get the prices being asked for the both the Red Rose and Wild Life box sets. I see them listed as being more than The Beatles White Album box set. Wha???? Wild Life has a charm to it, but like McCartney it needed a few more tracks IMO. To think songs like "I Lie Around" "Little Lamb Dragonfly", "Little Woman Love", "Hey Diddle", and "A love for you" and a few more were all recorded before the Wild Life sessions. Easily, a few of these could have fit nicely on that album to fill it out. Anyway, about Red Rose, I love the shiny new cover. The colors are so much more vibrant, whereas, the matte finish from the original is a bit blah. Anyway, I tend agree this should have just been a single album. It's a tighter album overall. Still, I would have like to have seen both "The Mess" and maybe "Best Friend"(he should have worked on a studio version. why didn't he??) added to this album to give it a bit more "umph!'. Over the years I've actually come to enjoy the studio version of "The Mess" along with the studio version of "Soily", another great rocker. To make room for these tracks I can do without "When the Night" or maybe "One More Kiss". Although I've always found the medley on Red Rose enjoyable enough, I dunno??, I guess in retrospect I see it more as a gimmick and maybe Paul being a bit lazy or really not knowing what more to do with these snippits of songs so why not just smash them together like what was done on Abbey Road. It works well enough but nothing spectacular. Still, for some reason I love "Power Cut" as a guilty pleasure. Wouldn't mind getting the reconstructed Red Rose but that'll have to wait. I was debating on even getting this reissue cuz it's never been one of my favorite albums but watching your review got me to re examine the album. Anyway, a nice review as always. Have you done a "Wild Life" reissue video???

Great review as always John. I’ve just spent hundreds of dollars on the white album 50th anniversary reissues so looks like the double CD will have to do me. I do have ‘Pipes of peace’ McCartney, Speed of sound, Ram and Venus & Mars in deluxe boxsets but I’ll have to put this one on the back burner until after Christmas. Keep up the good work!

I’m still debating whether to splurge on the deluxe 3 cd version. It seems there are some songs on it that aren’t on the 2 CD edition. Overall, I’m so glad to hear that the remaster has significantly improved the sound of the album. Red Rose Speedway is one of my favourite McCartney/Wings albums. I love every track. Can’t wait to hear it again, whichever edition I get.

I'm a big fan of the Wings albums after Wild Life. Red Rose, Band on the Run, Venus and Mars and Speed of Sound. Apart from the remastering aspect of the Archive series, I'm not impressed with the bonus material, except for RRS. Generally the bonus stuff is alternate takes or demos whereas the RRS bonus stuff is more like the wonderful Dylan Bootleg Series with material not heard often or live songs which are quite rare, for instance the wonderful 1882.

Thanks for another great review. I’m planning on getting the deluxe box and the reconstructed RRS but now I’m worried that the audio is unsatisfactory. Or, is it just a lot of information on each side and the volume needs to be increased a bit?

    • @johnheaton5667
      @johnheaton5667  5 лет назад

Darren Peacock i think turning up the volume certainly helps...cds always seem to be louder than vinyl!

    • @darrenpeacock3497

Great review John. I'm loving the remix. It's a bit of a stoner album, exploring some textures and rhythms with bass and percussion, and has his characteristic love of words that don't have much meaning, but are nice to sing - what does 'Lazy Dynamite' actually mean?! The album does crucially span the gulf between the sketches of McCartney and the fully realised Band on the Run, showing his growing confidence. The remix does confirm this line up were becoming pretty exciting. As much as I'm enjoying the additional tracks I think they did the right thing by keeping it as a single album. Has Denny spoken recently about these early seventies releases? He needs to go on Howard Stern!!

I never cared for this album much. Little Lamb Dragonfly is sweet and Big Barn Red is poppy fun, My Love has been played to death but Henry's guitar remains amazing. As for the rest I just don't really engaged with the material, Much of these trcks I prefer the live performances. Many people love the medly which to me is dire. Please no one shoot me it's just an opinion.
