I watched a documentary a few months ago where a monkey joined a troop of a different species of monkey. I wish I could remember what documentary it was. The monkey was around the same size as the other monkeys but that's all I can remember.

I remember seeing this on tv. It had a sad ending; the marmoset disappeared and the observers didn't find out what became of it.

If it could feed itself, it might have tried to join other marmosets. Or maybe it couldnt jump as far as them through the trees, and got left behind.

Maybe they were hungry & ate it. The lady did say that capuchins eat them. Same like that lioness that “adopted” that antelope baby & kept it for 3 days, everyone thought it was sooo cute & sweet until she killed it & ate it. Some ppl still refuse to believe that’s what happened but it was witnessed by the park rangers.

Maybe the female Capuchin had just lost her own infant & this adoption was based upon misplaced maternal instinct? In addition to this hormonally induced bonding experience, perhaps this female Capuchin additionally held a high enough rank in her troop so that other Capuchin troop members of both genders tolerated this odd adopted monkey with non-aggressive behaviors in their efforts to garner favor from the female Capuchin?
I remember reading about this strange incident in another publication which reported that on one day, as the researchers were looking for this baby Marmoset Monkey, the Marmoset monkey had totally-Disappeared! As to whether the baby Marmoset Monkey had left the Capuchin Monkey Troop to rejoin another Marmoset Monkey Troop or whether it had been by foul play from within The Capuchin Troop [i.e. it had been EATEN] couldn't be established. Knowing the aggressive nature of Capuchin Monkeys; my bet is that the Marmoset Monkey had definitely run-out of borrowed time...

Those are not the only two possibilities as to what might have happened to it. Capuchin infants that are in groups that are being followed and studied often suddenly go missing from the group and have usually met with a deadly end due to many other reasons (i.e. a serious fall, some other type of injury, some type of illness, poisoned from eating something it should not have, grabbed by another capuchin from another troop and killed, killed by some other wild animal, grabbed or killed by humans..one of the most common reasons...in one case local people often used the baby capuchins as target practice!!)

Probably her own newborn died, so she kidnapped a newborn marmoset, likely killing his mother because moms wont set down 1-3 day newborn, not even for second, and a tug-o-war wouldve injured him, so she hadda kill mom first. How adorable.
Of course its possible her baby died then she just happened to find this opportunity coming upon a newborn marmoset clinging to its moms corpse who had died in childbirth 24 hrs previous, but that version requires SO many coincidences and perfect timing, its much more likely she created an opportunity for herself.
