People have been asking for the 7800 form-factor since the 2600+ is basically a 7800 because it works with the same games. It makes sense. They took what they learned from the 2600+ and applied it to the 7800+ to make a better product, it would have been silly not to. I'm glad Atari is so responsive to their customers and releasing it so soon, and that each new product seems to be getting better. What they learn from the 7800+ could be used to improve the 2600+ with updates if the hardware is similar enough, but we know little about the new hardware at this point. The 2600+ is still a good product and people have been mostly happy with it until now. I think demanding perfection in the 2600+ before releasing a new product is putting Atari in a tough position.
Not asking for perfection, just basic QA for issues that the console never should have had. Really basic stuff like wrong button inputs and switches. Point taken though.
I have not bought a 2600+. My plan was to probably buy the one they released this year with the better firmware. Instead of getting an updated 2600+, I can now get a 7800+. For me that is a win.
I prefer the 2600 shell. I also did hesitate until recently. I wanted to wait like you did for an updated version. But I got it used (mint) for 60 bucks now. That's also a win for me.
I can be rational and agree with your sentiment. Absolutely, I think better support would have been better before rolling out a "new console". But I will say, as someone who is nostalgic for both 2600 and 7800 games and yet held off on the 2600+ because my first console was a 7800, Im really excited for this. I may be on the opposite side of the demographic however. I AM who this is for. I think of it this way, most console makers release variants in colors. Atari went a step ahead and released a new shell for people like me who have nostalgia for the 7800. Sometimes console variants are released, while the main console still receives firmware updates, bug fixes and even beta fw's. But yeah, I dont disagree with ya bro. But just sharing that there are those of us that have been waiting for this, fighting temptation and holding off from the 2600+, in the hopes this variant would be released. :) Have a good one!
I bought a 2600+ day one and preordered this. Either you like it or you don’t. You don’t have to buy it. I made the same choice with the Evercade Alpha.
Here's the counter argument. For one I highly doubt the people at Atart are sitting back saying' our customers are stupid and who cares about them etc. While I don't disagree about the updates becoming offical first before moving on, its usually not that simple, there has to be something holding back the update from going offical. Because when the update goes offical you have to make sure there are no bugs so there must be a nagging issue just not quite resolved and you can't send out an offical udpate if that's not resolved or there are some more compatibiliy issues they need to work out before they release it to the masses. Which brings me to my next point, the rest of the company can't just sit idley by. You have to remember at this point in time Atari isn't the Atari of the 70's and 80's let's be honest they're a boutque company but still with separate divisions. There is a division in charge of software updates and bug fixes and development, and there is game developers and programers and product developers. If product developers are done and ready to go and heading into the Fall Atari can't just put everything on hold until the software update is completely bug free or is completley finished. Atari isn't big enough to be able to sit out the Christmas season . As to why a 7800 and not something else? We aren't privvy to what is going on behind the scenes, who are we to say they aren't working on a 5200 or a Jaguar or Lynx, product and software and gaming development takes a lot of time. and with with being able to put a new shell on the same "guts" makes alot of sense and can be ready to go and be ready for the Christmas season. I'm sure they had to sit back and see how the sales were on the Atari 2600+ were to see if this avenue is viable. So i think in the meantime they have these new games coming out but how to promote them. I think putting out the new console in a 7800 shell is brillant actuallly. It's adds a level on interest as I'm sure the 2600+ sales have flattened out. This could breathe new life into the area gives added attention to the games and controllers. I for one pre-ordered one, I sat out the 2600+ because I already have two flashbacks and two orginal 2600's I just didn't want another 2600 shell but I've been itching to play 7800 games as of late. So this fits the bill. I'm happy they did this in fact I wish they leaned more heavily into it and offered a Vader shell as well. What I'm trying to say there is always alot going on in the background we have no clue and to write it off as " they think we are idiots were stupid, they're just taking advantage of our nostalgia" I think is very short sighted. anywho that's by counter point of view.
You bring up some good points. We'll be talking about this live on Tuesday at 8pm EST, and I'll bring some of this stuff up as talking points! You're welcome to join the chat, we respect all points of view here. :)
I just fouind this on Atari from Ben from Plaion. I hope this shreds a bit of light on why the update hasn't been sent out as 'Offical" this was posted on August 5th, We had some fires to put out after launch with the firmware and thats why we got Beta 1.1 pretty quick. Then after that Raz0red and friends carried on with the experimental incremental builds, in some cases re-writing large parts of code. The only thing stopping there being an 'official' release of software is that the updating experience is somewhat rough and ready, doesnt scream like a first party experience. I've made a bit of progress with improving the process, but its slow going and not easy. So no it's not that they are sitting in some board room laughing at how stupid the atari fanbase is. If you are sending out an offical wide update it has to be flawless.
If you are obtaining these from Amazon, I assume you live in Canada like me. Since Atari is wants to standardize the + standard, I am sure that new 2600+ firmware is coming soon. I didn't pick up a 2600+ but will grab a 7800+. I also await a new Atari XE system as well.
Having better home-brew support or an sd-card for updates/roms would make it interesting. They’ll likely only reach people who prefer the look of the 7800 with this.
I agree. The day they release something like this and actually have an SD card slot I'll be singing their praises! Although I know why they don't do it.
@@mikesgaminggala yeah I also understand why there’s no sd card slot, but since through Atariage thet sell lots of homebrews, not figuring out how to give better support for homebrew cartridges is what I don’t understand. Maybe as you said about phones, it’s simply not for this year’s model. Once we’ve all bought one, then maybe there’ll be a model supporting homebrews
👏I couldn't agree more. Atari has promised a winter release for the 7800+. What's interesting is that they have also promised an official firmware release for the 2600+ in November. I am currently using the latest experimental release for the 2600+, which I must say has made a huge difference in game compatibility (minus for now, Rikki & Vikki and ARM based Champ Games). Also the B/W switch now pauses the 2600 games as well. I'm pretty confident that by the time the 7800+ is released it will be using the same firmware as the 2600+ regardless of how it is numbered/identified. The 7800+ uses the same Rockchip RK3128 SoC and the same Stellla and Prosystem emulators as the 2600+. It is simply a reskin. The only thing that makes the 7800+ tempting is that by the time one pays for Bentley Bears (great game) and a CX78+ wireless controller, you're only paying another $65 for the packaging, console, and HDMI cable. Basically you have a redundant console, should the 2600+ fail on you. This will make sense for some, but since I already own an original and a modded 7800 along with a 7800 GameDrive, I believe my 2600+ is sufficient for quick portability and playing most of the games. As for the CX78+ which also works on the 2600+, I think I'll wait for you to comment on how well it works along with any latency. 😃
I grew up with Atari. This is clearly a money grab and I get that from a company aspect. A company has to make money and that is the only reason they make products period. But, insulting your main customer base over and over will only work for so long. Seems they have forgot why the original Atari company went under back in the day. Would be a different story if Atari released the promised firmware officially for the 2600+ for all of the people who supported the company. Additionally, not rely on the community to solve our own problems for their incomplete product.
A good read on what's going on with Atari! And the new 7800+. I am on the fence about getting one! I do like the 2600+, but it would be nice if Atari could get the right fix for it for everyone that ones one!
I think the appeal for stuff like this is the HDMI output. Worst case there are converters like Mr. Poestyle says. Much easier to convert HDMI to A/V and have it look good than the other way around.
I was trying to think if I would or not, and I keep going back and forth on it. The honest answer is probably not. It doesn't do anything that I can't already do 5 times over with other things I own.
You said everything I thought. It's the same price as the 2600+. And why are they releasing Berzerk for the 7800 at the same price as the 2600 version. I'm starting to feel like I'm being taken advantage of. But, like you, I'll probably buy it! It's a vicious cycle!
More whining for the sake of whining. If you already have a 2600+ then you don't need it. For those that haven't picked one up yet and actually prefer the 7800 casing, it's a very nice product.
I don't think it's whining to point out that Atari is releasing basically the same product while the existing one isn't "finished". If you're going to do something, do it right or not at all.
@@mikesgaminggala It doesn't matter if it's the same product, there was always going to be overlap with the 7800 just due to the 2600+ supporting 7800 games. This just gives people who prefer the look of the 7800 and who would rather have a 7800 pack-in a more appealing option than what was already out there. I really fail to see why this is such an offensive move to some people.
I was thinking about getting this but why are they releasing so many consoles without committing to any? The new VCS came out what, a year ago and shortly after the 2600+ and now this? Why are they flooding the market like this? If I buy one, it'll be obsolete in a few months. edit: Didn't the 400 mini just release too?
The VCS was several years ago, 2600+ was last year, Gamestation Pro came out about the same time (Not Atari, but Atari branded), then ya, the 400 mini was earlier this year. I don't necessarily have a problem with any of these individual consoles, just that this is a re-skin of the 2600+ and the 2600+ still has some pretty significant issues.
Amen to all of the above and I have considered making my own video raving about this. The Bentley Bear & Frenzy are the only games I am interested in. Atari... you know how I feel about them. Thanks, Mike!
Hahaha! I wasn't actually feeling low, this is my "This is silly" exasperated dad vibe. lol This is my grandparent's backyard. I'm incredibly lucky to still have them so I visit every year. :)
I think the company are on a last slippery slope to final oblivion which would be a shame but they just seem to be clutching onto anything to turn things around, Evercade is also another company that will go exactly the same way, poor hardware, poor firmware, poor customer support and poor quality control, I bought two Evercade EXP's and both were faulty. Can't they just bring out one quality retro machine that works and will last for six or seven year's before releasing a new one. I was going to buy a 2600+ but after seeing your video and being burnt by retro consoles twice there won't be a third, thank you for saving me 💵
Sadly, quality control and customer service are areas where Atari is VERY weak. I would say, though, that if you want a clone console that plays 2600 and 7800 games, I DO like my 2600+ and this 7800+ seems like it will be a better version of it. I don't specifically have a problem with the system itself, but rather the atmosphere it's released in.
Thank's for your reply and if the 2600+ is not to bad then maybe now in almost Sept 24 the shipped unit's may have already been patched, I know Evercade are pretty hopeless well the handheld atleast, they've put back their latest handheld back to November due to hardware/software issues. I think I'll give the 2600+ a try and order from Amazon here in the UK. I will let you know 🤞
7800+ , will I get one ? Oof . At the end of the day , you know me . Am I happy about that ? Probably . Will I use it much ? No . I have to be honest with myself here .
There will never be an official update. It will always be done by the community. For those that haven't bought the 2600+, this a fair price to buy in with better adaptability out of the box. No fiddling around hoping you don't brick your system. Don't buy in so early, be willing to wait. That's what I did. I'm getting a great deal on a system that comes completely updated to the community build, In a form factor I prefer. Your not dumb, but impatient. Just wait. Atari will put another one out in a couple years.
Welp... Maybe you are dumb, but you haven't HAD to be, yet. Vote with your wallet, by not purchasing something that is this tacky. Tacky, because it is unfinished and we all know it. I also don't use any wireless controllers. 😅 Helps when you sit within 4 feet of the console! 😂
I’m sick of these Atari re releases. Shits always the same. It’s like your old buddy still living in his head about his glory days still showing you the same high school football game his team one once back in 1997. Nostalgia only works when it hasn’t been seen over and over again for years and years.
I cant bevlieve Ford put out a Bronco and a Bronco Sport, I Can't belive there is pixel 9 and Pixel 9 pro I can't believe the iPhone comes in different sizes and colors smh
@@kghhgkgk6322 ok you keep telling yourself that... If they charged more than you would have a point . The fact that they are the same price and wireless out of the box negates your point.
Unfortunately the company that owns The Atari Brand is all about the cash grab On nostalgia , They put things out With the minimum effort and costs to themselves, They should have just released one system That you can play all your games on and works well And they would have sold Lot more units ,You have to realise as long as people like yourself continue to buy their substandard products They will never change, Then nostalgia bug is something that grips on tightly to all of us 😂 I agree with everything you just said, You should resist the urge to buy this though But I know you won't 😂
if that were true they would just licensed out the Atari IP iout to every tom dick and harry like previous Atari IP owners and not bother with spending time and money and research into software, consoles and new games. The undeductaed torches and ptichfork mentality is getting tiring.
@@Boswd Yes they're putting out consoles and new games But I really wouldn't say they're spending any money on research, I really don't want to poop on them But the quality of their products is not great, Say taking advantage People's nostalgia and good will, If they put out a decent product they won nobody would be complaining And they don't seem to be very active in fixing any of the issues , A lot of the problems seem to be getting solved by People in the community rather than Atari themselves
@@marcgoesblindgaming2076 and you have this knowledge.. how? You know where they are spending their money? Also how is using the Atari age community as beta tester for software updates and bug fixes a bad thing.... I think it's smart to be honest.... You are able to reach a larger number of testers under different circumstances instead of relying on a small handful of in-house testers... I think even the larger companies should do something similar..... And why is Atari treated different? The Switch has it's joy con drifting issues (class action lawsuit). Xbox 360 ring of death. PS 5 and it's controller issues... But if Atari has an issue then they are just cash grabbers who don't care.... Mind bogelling ... I know it's easier just to grab the torch and pitchforks.. but seriously to say they are just a cash grabbing company that could care less isn't a serious comment and just borders more on the uninformed troll type of comment.....
I have a love/hate relationship with Atari these days. lol
I know you're feeling a bit low in this video, but I gotta say that I'm loving the scenery. Probably much needed with Atari's bull-twang 🤣
Hahaha! I wasn't actually feeling low, this is my "This is silly" exasperated dad vibe. lol
This is my grandparent's backyard. I'm incredibly lucky to still have them so I visit every year. :)
At the end of the day, it's just another cart dumper like with the 2600+.
Get em Mike!!!
I try to be real 🙂👍
@@mikesgaminggala I had the pleasure to hang with Phil yesterday. It was a blast. Legendary!
@@Mr._Bassman97 NICE!!!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Mike.🕹🌅🍀
That is the best thumbnail I've ever seen.
I will let you know 🤞
Let us know how y'all really feel Mike thanks for being honest and speaking truth bombs have a great day
Lol. Thanks!
7800+ , will I get one ? Oof . At the end of the day , you know me . Am I happy about that ? Probably . Will I use it much ? No . I have to be honest with myself here .
Yep, I'm in the same boat!
I will not be buying anymore from Atari. I've been waiting on items I've ordered last year.
Very fair
I've dealt with said company. They're not good people.
Completely superfluous except for Atari - they can milk their fans with yet another emulator. Forget about it - make something really new!
I'm always within 4' of retro consoles when I play! 😆
All they are doing is repackaging the same old stuff.
I’m sick of these Atari re releases. Shits always the same. It’s like your old buddy still living in his head about his glory days still showing you the same high school football game his team one once back in 1997. Nostalgia only works when it hasn’t been seen over and over again for years and years.
Just a 2600+ in a new shell. Gross.
Pretty much, ya.
I cant bevlieve Ford put out a Bronco and a Bronco Sport, I Can't belive there is pixel 9 and Pixel 9 pro I can't believe the iPhone comes in different sizes and colors smh
@@Boswd ...none of those things are functionally identical. Good try though. Shake your head some more.
@@kghhgkgk6322 ok you keep telling yourself that... If they charged more than you would have a point . The fact that they are the same price and wireless out of the box negates your point.
@@Boswd next level stupidity
Unfortunately the company that owns The Atari Brand is all about the cash grab On nostalgia , They put things out With the minimum effort and costs to themselves, They should have just released one system That you can play all your games on and works well And they would have sold Lot more units ,You have to realise as long as people like yourself continue to buy their substandard products They will never change, Then nostalgia bug is something that grips on tightly to all of us 😂 I agree with everything you just said, You should resist the urge to buy this though But I know you won't 😂
Must... Resist... *sigh* not likely. 😆
if that were true they would just licensed out the Atari IP iout to every tom dick and harry like previous Atari IP owners and not bother with spending time and money and research into software, consoles and new games.
Just because you have a you tube channel doesn't make you an expert in the field.
@@Boswd Sorry My comment was not meant to cause offence, It's just my opinion, I don't claim to be any kind of expert And when it comes to things like the Nintendo switch Joyless cons I have been complaining about those for years, Yes I may have a RUclips channel But it's just a hobby, I don't make serious videos just silly stuff that makes me laugh, That's why I watch people like Mike Who speak a lot of sense and I think actually do know what they are talking about, Sad to see you took my comment so personally, I'm not here to troll, Just voice my opinion , Like you are entitled to voice yours, If I don't like what I believe Atari is doing That's up to me, If people like you choose to support them And believe they are doing a great job That's also fine, I've honestly never seen someone so eager to jump to the defence Of Atari, Are you sure you don't work for them? 😄😄😄 I jest
