So I Coded Pacman In Minecraft...

- Pacman in Minecraft, I coded it so that the entire game of Pacman / Pac-Man, an old time classic, is now in vanilla minecraft (I used a plugin/mod on the server). with this plugin I messed with my friends and their reaction was HILARIOUS. I really hope you enjoy this video, I loved making it, was a ton of fun!

As a programmer with a few years of experience, I can confirm that it is like a holiday when a program (usually a complex one) works first try
Then it is like a dread, while wondering if there REALLY wasn't a bug in there somewhere
Fun fact: I once spend days trying to find a bug: Apparently I typed "||" instead of "|", somehow twice. (To the computer that's like saying "a++b" instead of just "a+b".) But since both || and | are valid 'operators', no error was detected.

Well, even if I didn't get an error, a Logical OR "||" had a significant difference from a Bitwise OR "|". My code was just checking 8 pins, each high or low. While Bitwise OR looks at two 8 bits and outputs bit-by-bit, Logical OR sees the two bytes as two 8-bit *numbers* instead. Destroying the 'pin data', as 8× True and False became an 8-bit number instead.
Funny, and annoying, how a completely valid opperation has massively different outcomes, all because of one extra symbol.
Welp, about 10% of programming is writting code. The other 90 is debugging said code...

An interesting balance you could've had to Pac-Man, is he normally moves about as fast as say a Player Run, maybe slower. But once the player is in front of them, no matter the distance, Pac-Man just BOOKS IT. I think that's be a really interesting premise and could've maybe even had the players think differently when playing.
This is a really smart idea, if I end up reworking the mod I will 100% do this

First off, Minecraft is not a simple game.
Second, "block" is not a game genre.
Third, Minecraft is a 3D grid-based sandbox-game.
Fourth, Minecraft has technically been in development since 2009 (12 years).

@josefa.9105 You must be fun at parties. The game was originally made as a simple block game in 2009 but it's no longer simple anymore. I still define it as simple though because that is what Notch wanted for its development. 'Block game' isn't a genre but many people call it that, so going with the flow would be the best option. I know its a sandbox game but nobody wants to hear special words defining what the game truly is, instead of 'simple block game' overall just being an easier way of saying that. Oh, and I know it was made in 2009. The game was fully released in 2011, which is when the big ceremony happened when Notch pulled the real life lever.

This is really cool. I like how you solved the cornering issue. Something you might want to consider as an addition (or alternative way of changing direction) can be found in the original. Turning actually gives pacman a little bit of a distance advantage.
If you're fleeing a ghost in a straight line, one who will eventually catch up with you, making a bunch of turns can buy you some time.
In your game, when pacman makes a turn, if the direction input is one block too soon, he makes the turn anyway, and appears automatically centered in the new passage. This would essentially skip him one block ahead of where he would have been by waiting to line up properly.
I understand that this would likely require trashing a significant amount of your working code, but just as a sort of thought experiment I think it's cool to imagine more of the original dynamic implemented in your game.
On a side note, did you experiment with portals for the . . well . . the portals?
I still have an original Atari 400 with the PacMan cartridge (and plenty of others) and this was really fun to see.

Philza was the best at this game, proving he was around when Pacman was made. He is the oldest man alive.
The only problem I really see other than the speed thing that someone has already brought up is the fact that Pac-Man and even the ghosts in the original game are incapable of turning around without taking turns. From what I have seen it appears able to just turn around even on a long stretch.
the ghosts can do a 180 turn only upon entering fear/panic mode (packman picks up a power pellet)
pacman however is 100% to move wherever he can
ghosts could sometimes hit a wall and go back trying a new route, specially the orange one, while the pac-man is playable so you can probably win without doing this but it's oerfectly common to happen
I'm pretty sure Pac-Man could turn around. It was the ghosts that only turned back when they changed their state between chase, fear and retreat.
