Most whiskeys I buy, I watch your reviews and others. And look at written reviews wherever I might find them online. But something about this whiskey grabbed me, and I just had to impulsively buy it after your review of it (the normal review back in the day, not this one), and I am so thankful for that! It's one of my favorite whiskeys now, and I dont know if I ever would have tried "the gimmicky blue bottle whiskey".
This video makes me feel better about something I did after the Bastard's Ball. Me and my plus 1 were invited by other MB's to meet up with them at La Quinta where so many generous people set up a free for all of rare and very expensive whiskeys. It was like being in the Vault and being able to try whatever you wanted. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity so I might have lost track of how much whiskey I actually tasted. All in all I'd say I still handled myself pretty well that night but right before we left I was saying goodbye to some people and ended up bombing one of the livestreams one of the RUclipsrs were running. I watched it the next day and it was obvious I was completely lost in the conversation. Thank God it ended up being like a 3 hour long video in their play list.
So The Classic Laddie is my first foray into Scotch after seeing a documentary with Jim McEwan. I LIKED bourbon at the time (probably 5 years ago) but didn’t LOVE it. Tasted the Laddie and nearly poured out the bottle! So nasty! Over the years I began to love bourbon but still couldn’t palate the Laddie or any other scotch I tried. Then i started distilling my own single malts. Been watching your videos for a year or do now and stumbled upon this one. SO! Last night I broke out the Laddie again and from the heavens I heard a loud Hosanna! Like your tasting notes here, there was that big new-make character, lots of butterscotch, fruit, brine, …just SO pleasant! I feel like I’ve finally made the turn on the whiskey course of life! I can now say I love Scotch Whiskey…well, at least one! Lots more research to do now! Thanks guys…you just cost me an arm and a leg! 😉
Daniel Lanois is from close to me! Such an amazing producer/musician. His brother is part of another popular Canadian band, the Tragically Hip. Love the videos and comparisons to music. Thanks!
I actually bought a bottle of the classic laddie because of what you said about it being peated without looking at the label myself. It ended up a very pleasant surprise
The Classic Laddie is unpeated Scottish barley from multiple sources as far as I can tell and there is also an unpeated exclusively Islay barley version. I haven’t tried the later yet. Greetings fellow hermit. I know EXACTLY what you’re talking about. Great videos. Australian 🇦🇺 in Texas 🇺🇸. Cheers.
I've done the side by side of the 2007 islay barley with the classic laddie. The islay barley has a lot more of that pepper, it even shows up on the nose and mid palate. Meanwhile the classic laddie has a much fruitier nose and the pepper and spice only shows up at the finish. Bought a second bottle of the islay barley just in case bc i really love it
I'm so glad I happened to open a bottle of the Classic Laddie and watch this video. That thing you said about the peat in the Modern Rogue video threw me wayyy off! I was confused if the Classic Laddie has peat in it or not. Some said no but Daniel said it does..... Took me this long to finally get the answer (since I bought a bottle of my own). This video explains it all :D
I love Highland and Speyside Scotch! McClelland Highland being a fave along with Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. But ended up getting a classic laddie and holy smokes is it spicy and smokey and briney with dark chocolate and green apples. Might venture into more Islay
So I recently bought my first bottle of reply, and was discussing it with a friend a few days ago. She had an interesting point, that while the whiskey itself may be unpeated in terms of peat smoking the barley, wouldn't the water used for distillation and proofing have at least some peat influence? Or do they use a cleaner source of water that wouldn't have the local terroir in it?
Nathan Earley peat doesn’t really have an aroma, especially not a smokey one, until you burn it. You could possible get some earthiness from the water running through peat that hasn’t dried yet, but likely not the typical notes that burning brings put in whisky. (Fun fact the water flowing through islay is often brown from the peat despite being perfectly clean and drinkable)
She's absolutely right. The peat influences the water source. While it is unpeated that really just means that the barley wasn't dried over burning peat, so you don't get any smokiness. You still get all of the other peat influence through the water itself.
Based on this video I bought a bottle of The Classic Laddie, so coming into it, I had some expectations that may have steered my impressions. I do get the peaty notes even though I know they are not there. Also Daniel Lonios turns out to be a very good musician, just like this scotch.
I like your Classic laddie description as being in bushes, where various aggressive notes attacks you simultanously and quickly in a short time. It reminds me Captain Beefheart style of music.
I remember that mistake and I figured when you were about to talk about a "past mistake" if that is where you were going with your train of thought. I understand the way you feel, Daniel, I have been criticized in my past job about "answering questions I knew nothing about" by making mistakes like you did on that MR shoot when I actually knew the answer but jumped a logical analysis step that made it sound like I didn't know what I was talking about. Shit happens, some people take it a lot harder than other and sadly the internet (and some co-workers) will be amongst the vocal minority that will hit you on the head for small mistakes.

I really enjoyed the rawness and honesty of this video. I just did a review of this Bruichladdich Classic Laddie on my other page as a practice video into my world of RUclips. My page isn't even about alcohol, but I love it so why not talk about it? Thanks Daniel, I tell everyone about your page when they ask me about whiskey.
Broadcaster/Performers line..never the Blame and never explain...... Keep it moving. I know about being introverted 40+ years in Broadcast Television and Radio.. Now that I am out I don't have to be out front and in the public eye anymore... On the other hand are you really ever out?
There was ones a celebrity, I think it's Joan Collins... She said in the talk show.... “... Give me a man who has NEVER DONE any mistakes in his life, I'll give you a man who has NEVER live ”.
Folks are constantly confused when I tell them I am introverted, there are so many different “flavors” of us. However, I must ask who Pete is and why is he so dominant? 😜
I love the combined whiskey and music talk. Great way to discover new favorites in both categories.
Wear that badge of honor flaws and all buddy. We love you for who you are. From one whisk(e)y loving introverted bastard to another. Cheers brother.
Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker....outstanding!!!
We salute anyone who appreciates Lanois. And the classic Laddie is just candy apple!

I love these videos with the music comparisons. You're also simultaneously introducing me to new music. Thank you!

introvert and proud, and if you don’t drop a bollock every now and then you’re not trying hard enough🥃

Classic Laddie is bright just like the bottle. Takes a while to fall in love. Angels envy is a great bourbon to follow after this
Man, what a great talk about whisky, rock and life!! A shame I live far far away, otherwise I would have a couple of drams at your bar! Cheers!
This vídeo was realy great!!!
Thanks to share your thoughts with us.

I am a real peat head and despite that, I get what you mean about the hint of peat in this Classic Laddie!
"Moondog" is now on my fave list. The Classic Laddie has the same reverberation as does Lonois' vocals....
Steel Guitars always a win!!!
what an insanely likeable guy .....and whiskey!
I actually bought a bottle of the classic laddie because of what you said about it being peated without looking at the label myself. It ended up a very pleasant surprise
Thanks Daniel for describing it so well, now I know for sure I'm an introvert.

This is the first whiskey my fiancé said she can stand smelling.

You had me at Lanois ...this will be my next purchase

You mentioned this was one of two non-peated islays that are good examples - what was the other one? I love the Classic Laddie
Bunnahabhain
The Bunnahabhain 12 is outstanding value. Un-chillfiltered and natural colour. 46.3% ABV. Small batches.
God it took me forever to figure out you were saying Daniel Lanois
If I had not known of Daniel Lanois, I also would have struggled to understand what Dan said. :-)
Must listen to "Acadie" album by Daniel Lanois

I didn't realize I could switch profiles and stay on your video. hah. Anyway, peace.
We are not assholes, but we will ball bust!
Can you just say in one word if you recomend it or not?
5PPM peat
lol I relate
Wow. Drinking this NOW with you ! I so want to sit down and drink with you! #Not in a weird way!!!
Daniel, for some of us, if you didn't make mistakes, we'd never contribute to the comments at all.

Daniel called Bruichladdich a peated Islay?! That's it, I'm quitting whiskey. Who wants my Laphroaig collection?
Bring it here lol
I love it but it tastes peaty to me
There was ones a celebrity, I think it's Joan Collins... She said in the talk show.... “... Give me a man who has NEVER DONE any mistakes in his life, I'll give you a man who has NEVER live ”.
Not leaving a comment this time

aspergers syndrome with special interest in whisky? Sounds like me...
