For Today’s Tutorial Tidbit I'm using some of my throwback OG stencil designs… What’s old is new again, and why not? I have been perfecting this technique of two-tone dual pattern and the best results are achieved with stencils that have a small pattern on the base, combined with masks that have a big, bold, open pattern for the top layer. The combination and size of patterns is just as important as the colors of paint you choose while working on our favorite rice paper pad!

I watched this video twice, second time through I watched it at double speed. I dutifully took notes as instructed right in my notes app. Gotta love Picture in Picture.
First time watching, I thought of specific stencils and made note of them.
Second time through I thought of die cuts. Zowie! I think it will be easier to control, well not easier, but definitely more accessible for my brain, to create the open spaces and masked areas with paper motifs. I have more chunky shapes in dies than I do in stencils. Most of my stencils have delicate line weights. Using stencils for the second step and die cuts for the third & fourth step is going to be super cool, I think.
I’m trying to think of an adjective that’s not insulting and all I’m coming up with is “wild, haphazard, chaotic”. Okay. “Organic” is better. I think Elizabeth likes more organic patterns than I do.
I am most often attracted to grids, lattice, plaids, and mandalas. I bought Elizabeth’s peacock foam stamps because I immediately thought of making mandalas with them while watching the introductory video.
I think Elizabeth is more comfortable with spontaneity while I am more “I have to map this out”. When thinking about using die cuts in this process, I was picturing a grid.
I like to put my gel plates on quilting rulers because it makes it very easy to use the plates like a stamp plus it makes it much easier to register prints. Another great aspect of placing plates on quilting rulers is that I can tape a picture or sketch to the backside of the ruler and then my sketch has a grid overlaid.
Second time through I also thought of the character LL Cool J played in the movie “Toys” (came out in early 90s). The guy who said, “I’m a military man. I like a military plate” in the cafeteria scene. I think like that guy I can be quite rigid.
But if you like more organic patterns too, you can always use the paper left behind after die cutting. You know how when you run a bunch of dies through at once, you’re left with that funky piece of paper? That leftover bit would also be great in steps 3 & 4. Then you’d have a combination of controlled and spontaneous.
And the great big bonus to using die cuts? It’s a twofer because you will also be printing on the die cuts you use in step 4. Oh yeah, you’ll also be painting the die cuts you use in step 3, so that’s more decorated paper. I’m excited to try this idea.
You could also use hand cut paper in steps 3 and 4. You know it’s a really good video when your mind just explodes with possibilities.

So I bought 3 of your stencils from Joggles on Wed. That was the 1st I'd heard of you. Suddenly RUclips recommended your videos to me. So weird how that happened but I was happy as I really enjoy collage and gelli printing. Anyways saw the email today about the 25% off stencils and went and purchased some more. Was so excited, I realized later that I purchased 2 of yours twice-ha ha lol. I apparently really liked the designs! Yeah I'm a stencil junkie.
Thanks for the glimpse of No Cal while you were walking. Looks like my old neighborhood in metro Sac. Miss that area but not the heat. Been a little farther north in OR for 10 yrs now enjoying the mostly cooler weather. Will have to come back for a visit with my friends & take a class with you someday.
