I felt like the movie I was watching was kinda through the dying mind/memories of a 4 year old (now in a coma from the fall down the stairs that we're led to believe wasn't serious) - trapped within his head, facing the ceiling, no longer physically able to move or use the toilet (which disappears along with any way out of his home/mind), and the only constant within his memories - his sister - and their time spent closely together, eating cereal, watching cartoons, playing with Legos, ect. - is the clearest memories he possesses; until she fades from his mind as well.
(I feel there could be themes of neglect/divorce? running thru as well.)
Or I'm completely wrong. :)
Anywho, I loved the film.
There was definitely neglect. Kids don’t just have not have a reaction to being completely alone like that unless it happens frequently.
Also I picked up on the divorce with the mom reassuring the kid that they still love them. I remember hearing something like that when my parents had their divorce and it’s a stereotypical line in movies.
This is my favorite interpretation I’ve read so far! It’s very dark and messed up… but I like that
I TOTALLY FELT THE SAME THING!!!
If anyone is unsure if they want to see this in theaters, I recommend watching the short film that was made as a sort of pilot. The short film is called "Heck" and uses much of the same visual style, camera angles, and low fidelity look. You can check that out on the director's RUclips channel since, well, it's free and only 30 minutes. So if you don't like that short, don't bother with Skinamarink. I think the short film was better mostly due to its length.
Thanks John
Thank you. Will do....
One thing that everyone glosses over is that during the scene in the bedroom, if you listen very carefully it sounds like the entity in the film is telling the mom and dad what to say, which makes that scene even more scary
I’ve been thinking the same. Further, while watching I was under the impression the mother telling her daughter how they loved her was her breaking from the script the entity wanted, hence her asking her daughter to close her eyes. She spent her last moment of autonomy to defy it and express love, and knew she’d be punished for it. Cue the bone-crunching.
Saw this in the theater last night. As a horror fan I feel like we’re all chasing that high of feeling terrified like we were when we were kids watching a scary movie we actually shouldn’t be watching.
Just like you said, this movie made me feel that insane primal fear I had as a child. Like I’m five years old, I woke up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and I’m scared that I have to turn the light off and run back to my bed before the darkness catches me
As much as I hear others talk about how it would've been better if they cut some time off, I think it was perfect. In the beginning it really helped set up that feeling of "comfort" or familiarity since we basically kept seeing everything over and over again. Then once the jump scares started to come up, things didn't feel as safe anymore which keeps you on your toes a bit. It just makes you feel vulnerable. With how long the movie is, it makes the viewer get impatient and anxious even. And mixing that with fear really does the job in my opinion.
I’m subscribing, I love how things causally go missing in the background and I never caught it until the shelves were empty lol
sleep was a strong theme of the movie, from the children sleeping downstairs to the parents in their bedroom, to even just the nightmare aspect. as i was watching in the theater i wondered if this was filmed intentionally to try to make you feel sleepy as well. my friend fell asleep twice 😅
I felt like the deeper story was that the kids were abused and Kevin may be in a coma and this film is his coma nightmare. It felt like one of my own nightmares as a child of being stuck in my basement in the dark with no windows.
The final scene of the movie genuinely made me physically feel chills upon my skin. But it all depends if you have a good attention span, have good imagination, and are able to let yourself get lost in a movie
I had to cover my eyes with that last scene, lol
What was the last scene?
@@Comicedits39 it was a face staring at you. It wasn’t that bad tbh. The one in antrum was worse imo
To understand the film, let's start with the concept: the nightmare of a child. From there, we go worst possible scenario. The absolute Worst thing that can happen to children. An abusive father, driven by an evil influence, murdered his family with a knife while convincing them everything is OK & so they don't understand what happened.
Start Here: Most people are connecting it to a coma, but a parent saying a child fell down the stairs is a classic excuse to cover up physical abuse--it's even flagged as such when children need medical care. We know that the mother is gone; she's been gone from the beginning. The girl doesn't even want to talk about it when the boy brings it up, but the mother appears later to say the parents love them, forever and always, no matter what happens/happened (a rift on the original skinamarink folk song if you're just now connecting why that is the title)... parents killing spouses and their own children that they love is a common theme in murders and murder-suicides. You can also imagine some of the scenes of parents killing their children one by one, where siblings don't fight back or run away. Perhaps the mother was killed long before the children were & manifests now because of how exceptionally traumatic this is for her children trying to guide them--notice she's completely heartbroken, regretful, and can't stand to look at or physically comfort her daughter, doesn't call to the boy, even though the film hints she was loving and has not seen them for some time. Remember, in some interpretations, dark corners, corridors, and doorways can be literal gateways to another realm within which we find the dead & demons. This includes spaces under beds which we've feared since childhood for a reason no one ever actually told you--welp, Now you know!
From here, things still align with some of what's said about the coma and the children trying to process what happened. But keep in mind that we're never in an emergency room or hospital. Anecdotes about floating to the ceiling or corner of a room or accident scene while being resuscitated are common. We can take that to also mean that's what happens when we die, wherever we are. The children died together and never left the house. They no longer can as symbolized by the doors and windows being gone. The girl figures it out first after confronting the parents (facing them, rather than the contentious definition of the word) and she leaves too. She was older, it made sense for them to try to approach her first. As with the rabbit in the cartoon, when you are ready to cease existing, you can make yourself disappear. Unconsciously the cartoon is trying to tell them that. However, it's nearly a year and a half of haunting the house for the boy to process that he's in this purgatory-like state, his younger mind can't figure it out, and the parents can't bear to tell him. He, in fact, tries to change it in his mind, having made the 911 call that ultimately never really happened. The boy is simply the one that's in the house the longest, but he's not there "alone" at first. If the film is only about him in a coma, the sister wouldn't be the Only one present in it's most significant scene. That's always been a major loophole in the coma theory.
As for the presence: It's not necessarily a demon but could be. In any case, it's the evil part of the father that killed them all. The father might have compartmentalized this evil, and hence it lingers separate from him. But it has the father's voice and only until the very end does the boy see it as someone/something different. Left to interpretation if it's because he can't recognize his father as having been capable of the murder. It's after the boy thought of trying to make the 911 call and things remaining the same that the boy is on the verge of accepting his fate. It would have been the last thing he saw when he was alive, his killer standing over him in the dark. Again, worst nightmare scenario, it's not his mother that's meeting him. She's been relatively powerless and fearful to come back for the boy. It's this presence instead that's taking him off into the afterlife.
Occams razor my friend…
Yeah, I dunno... this feels a little like hearing hooves galloping toward you, and thinking Zebras instead of Horses.
BUT - I mean, you could be exactly right, who knows... So I'm certainly not discrediting your comment. It's an interesting concept.
I guess only the director knows for sure - and he's not telling. Lol. All he'll say in the interview I watched earlier is that the story IS linear, but he wants people to come to their own conclusions. ✌☺
@@jerryanderson1245 Indeed, normally I'd agree with that, but the SIMPLEST explanation is that it's a run-of-the-mill haunted house story. The coma explanation isn't the simplest; it's the most Common. But it irked me that the sister has her own scenes if it's the boy's coma, among other holes. Note: I managed to avoid all theories until I saw it first
@@owlseyetarot Yeah, we'll never know, know until Ball gives us more hints. Though I mentioned above: with the coma, the most common explanation is actually not the simplest. The coma theory has been spread the most but requires some selective omission and misremembering of what we saw... more Mandela Effect, perhaps?
@@SRQBID Have you seen "Heck"? It's the director's 28 minute short film, and it's free, here on RUclips. (I believe his channel is called Bitesized Nightmares.)
It's the template for what Skinamarink became - with a slightly different (and more bleak) spin on certain aspects.
For anyone who enjoyed Skinamarink in any way, I think "Heck" is DEFINITELY worth a watch. 🙏
Be well. ✌
It's interesting. Definitely too long. I wasn't scared much, just...uncomfortable. I will say, if I had caught even a couple minutes of this film as a kid, it would have scarred me for life. It's like the movie was made to scare the shit out of children.
I don't get why everyone talks about abuse non stop. Kids fall down on their face all the time, coma or head trauma makes sense, but there's nothing indicating any of them were abused.
Thank you for the Love & support of our Film.❤️ ~Cheers!🍻
My major criticism is that I wish everything said had subtitles. Lots to love. But yeah a bit too long
Really enjoyed this movie, the first 40 minutes were almost ruined from some teens walking in 10 minutes late and talking before leaving.
Yet after it was my friend and I plus 3 others, and we all had the same reaction "It was different" but you could tell it was still enjoyed. It hit me more after watching and my friend had the same feeling that getting home and seeing a dark space felt uneasy.
It felt like a nightmare being seen when you have a fever or are stressed. Those stiff moments but something is there and you're trapped. Really great new take I'm looking forward to a physical copy to support the film and see more work.
Also check out ANALOG horror to be familiar with the style.
You won't believe the hassle I had to go through with this movie. I showed it to my 4 year old thinking it was a Sharon, Lois, and Bram sing-a-long. BOY was my daughter upset!
Absolutely loved this film, creepy as fuck and gets under your skin.
i like how the vinyl pops disappear as the video goes on, a subtle idea that as the video goes on your chance of being loved goes up
I feel like if this film was cut down by at least 30 minutes. It would have been 10/10. I love weird movies, love most of David lynch films. I wish there was more of the house in the nothingness and that long door leaving into the nothing. When it was good, it was good. But when it was slow, it was slow. I will definitely watch it again when it releases on shudder. My mom called it Floors, ceilings and walls: the movie. But it wasn’t her cup of tea. I just feel that loud noises with a bright light to make a jump scare isn’t effective. A jump scare is a reaction. Not an emotion.
That chicken scared me😅
Watching this in a crowded theater isn’t as scary as watching this at 3 am alone in your living room in pure darkness. It will traumatize me and I’m not sure I could do it. Imagine stumbling across a DVD of this when you’re 10 and watching it. This movie could be life-changing therefore a masterpiece. I think 20 years from now we’ll be calling this a horror classic.
Amazing movie, wonderfully matching the tone with the aesthetic, as well as using not knowing as a way to use the very surreal concept to keep invested viewers engaged. Buttttt if you're like some random movie pass user, wanting something fun to watch, I can imagine this looking like a terrible movie, something without a "point" or story to follow, which is probably something most people want, but this movies story is so perfect for itself. Strange movies like this rarely release in theaters, but I hope more do.
Great review. Loved your disappearing background. Neat addition.
I wish i could experience it for the very first time AGAIN! Great movie. 👍
Appreciate the subtle nod to the film by you slowly removing the contents on your shelves. 😉
And yes I LOVED the film!! Watched it 2x to really catch everything
First time checking out your channel. You are a great reviewer.
I like how everyone is trying to emulate this movie now. Considering it was made for 15,000 (even I could budget wise make something for around that value) and now the guys a millionaire.. this will inspire a lot of new projects, ect. which is really cool!
If Boards of Canada made a movie..
Great review, this movie was really special and scared me in a way I haven’t felt since I was a kid. If you haven’t checked out the director’s channel, Bitesized Nightmares, definitely give it a watch! It’s a lot more of what works so well in this movie, but at super digestible lengths. Subscribed!
This movie's gonna become a cult classic.
I can definitely see this movie being mentioned in a line up of cult classic horror films!
@@TheUnprofessionalReviewer I can see 'Skinamarink' being used as a template for future, bigger budget movies.
@@rebelfighter5249 agreed.
Perhaps even music 🤷🏼♂️
Agreed! It’ll be a cult classic like Eraserhead and Possession (1981).
You have a really great review voice and great taste in movies!
I thought it was terrible. I had high hopes for something different and thought the concept would be terrifying. What I got was a bunch of murmuring that was barely audible, shots that didn't make any sense, and no real plot or story line. It was almost painful to watch, and admittedly I had to watch it in two parts because I just couldn't stand the banal nature of the film. The only thing it reminded me of was like some sort of film MKUltra would use to brainwash somebody. I guess that's scary.
On the topic of the movie being cut down. In a way there is a shorter version. A proof of concept on his youtube channel just called "heck" in my opinion it is much scarier especially that final line.
Had to leave halfway through , as well as 10 others in the theater. Unless you enjoy looking at a static screen and the same thing over and over again don’t watch this. The only “scary” scenes were just loud noises
This is the best and most well-organized review I’ve watched so far! You’re great a what you do. Thank you for the info!
Nice review 😊
Also, fantastic intro. Also, where did you go?
Thank you! It was so fun making that. I filmed it at 2am… in the dark… in an empty basement…
As for where I went, we may never know
Loved the movie! Not quite as much as I was hoping I would, but I’m so, so glad that I didn’t get as bored as I heard everyone else did.
Is 11 thousand usd is the budget
Yes it is $15,000 CAD. Still extremely low budget either way!
worst movie of all time
Spoilers? of What? Long periods of staring at walls and bad grainy footage and no story or plot???
you wouldn’t believe the sound of disappointment from everyone in the theater after the movie was over. It was incredibly bad.
Understandable! I imagine this movie will end the weekend with maybe a D+ CinemaScore? I did enjoy the experience of the film more than most will. I’m not surprised in the slightest by your reaction
I dunno, I feel like that extra 30 minutes is somewhat needed. The beginning especially feels like the movie is preparing you for how it works. It's such a weirdly shot and paced film that it eases you into its pace until it feels somewhat natural before playing with the concept.
planning on going to see this, but does the movie explain why your funko pops kept disappearing as the video goes on?
Well you’ll see where they went at the end of the video 👀
Though I feel that the overall presentation during the final stretch leaned a little too far into the abstract, I can honestly say that I enjoyed the film. Even if I was the only one in the theater to actually do so.
I LOVED this movie - it could’ve been an hour and twenty though…
I felt like this is a movie with a ton of layers that the viewer can pick apart and analyze. To me, this really feels like one of those "it means whatever you think it means" movies but that's not a necessarily bad thing. Definitely something I would watch again, just with the volume turned down and subtitles on lol.
It's HeiHei!!
They should have called this movie "Rinkydink"
Hey man where did the funko pop go. Creepy lol
I loved the move and thought it was the perfect length. my only complaint would be that it didn't really feel like we or the kids spent 500 Days in the house. I wish the environments were more messy and really showed the amount of time spent in that place. other than that, I really loved the shot composition and audio design.
I loved it. Looking into the dark halls wondering if I was seeing something or not was excruciating
This is quite literally the worst movie I have ever seen. I actually left the theatre angry at having lost almost 2 hours of my life watching this. I am having trouble thinking of any worse movie that I have watched and I can’t seem to find one worse than this. It takes a special film to make one mad after leaving the theatre. The thing that I hated about the film was the inconsistency in the elements of the film such as the house was a mid 90s style house, but then there are some rooms with 70s style carpet and paneling that are obviously not in the same house. Then the film grain is over done, cheesy, and not representative of the mid 90s film quality. The film had all of the cheesy grain and artifacts in it reminiscent of super 8 analog film of the mid 70s. The lo fi effect was just pure cheese. Terrible film.
Wish you could’ve enjoyed the film as much as I did but I get what you’re saying! Definitely not for everyone but if it is, it can be so great
The movie could’ve been 40 minutes shorter, and maybe had more substance, but the 70s grain and poor sound being “cheesy”? Shit was scary as hell and I hope they do it in future films
The final scene of the movie genuinely made me physically feel chills upon my skin. But it all depends if you have a good attention span, have good imagination, and are able to let yourself get lost in a movie
I feel like this movie is best suited for when you are alone in your room at 2 am. I watched this in the theater and because of how quiet it is, I could hear all the dialogue of Avatar in the theater next door. I went into this with an open mind and knew what I was getting into, yet I still left the theater frustrated knowing I wasted 2 hours of my life and the $12 I paid for the ticket. I am not sure where the $15k budget went, I think it might have been a bribe to get the movie in theaters for a weekend.
Bummer your theater experience wasn’t the best for this. I do imagine it being very creepy at home super late too. As for the budget I just don’t think you fully understand what it takes to make a movie. To make a film look and especially sound like this it takes a lot of work and attention to detail. Couldn’t tell you exactly where the budget went but working on shorts myself, money goes by very very fast even for a 10 minute short film let alone an almost 2 hour film
Some parts of this movie felt a little "creepy pasta" to me which I wasn't a huge fan of but other parts were truly incredible in the way that the director could create such a visceral emotional reaction using very little. The scene where you hear the kid dialing 911 on the phone over and over and it never connects broke my fricken heart. The moments where the film emphasized the vulnerability and the innocence of the children was both the highlight and the most horrific element of the movie
analog horror is crap that people claim is good so they can feel smart. can't change my mind
