This is a problem that goes all the way back to the Clemson 2019 game. We beat ourselves every time. We have chances to bury teams early every time and we don't. We get cute, we lose emotion/communication/violence, and we play timid. Think about it. Clemson 2019, Oregon 2021, Michigan 2022, Georgia 2022, Michigan 2023, Missouri 2023, Oregon 2024. Where is the killer instinct?
OSU had 8 penalties to Oregon's 3. OSU forced zero sacks or turnovers. And still, in the end, Day and staff mismanaged the last 1:47 of regulation. Oregon did a better job in all of the phases of the game that ultimately matter and they won. Tip of the cap.
@@bradmurray7362 I agree the defense was all those things but the offense was also without its issues: a turnover, penalties, losing our left tackle (just terrible, feel so bad for Josh Simmons) and the most concerning to me was Will Howard. The numbers look good but another under throw on a deep ball, dropped a snap on a key 3rd down, the decision making at the end of the game was baffling. All were the concerns of Will Howard going into the year. If you watched him at KSU he’s the same player.

Clemson in 19' was taken by the refs and Georgia in 22' was also taken by refs AND we lost the best player in the country on the horrible overturn. That stat is misleading Like my man said players gotta make plays too. Drop pass to move the sticks. False starts. Pass interference. Missed block. Or if a defense gives up points changes script. Check Kirby Smarts career before he started winning 🤔 Day is in yr 6. He's one of the top coaches and only gonna move up in position.
Also, where's the stunts and twists up front? Relying on 4 guys to rush straight up field, and try to beat their man straight up 1-on-1, over and over again and not win, is insanity.
Great game. Oregon shows the country the PAC is real, and all the media bias is just that. Just like in real life, you can report what ever you want but you can’t change the results. Look, much props to OSU, but Oregon is the best team in the country and they proved it. OSU has potential, but you need to stop making excuses. You were given 7 point right at the start. With what would have been great field position and the way Oregon started off, I do t see how they wouldn’t have capitalized on that turn over that was stolen from them. With that 14 point turn around, Oregon still overcame the horrible call that no one, bucks or ducks can deny was the wrong call contributing to 7. Side note, even after fans and all pod casts agree, you, “Ohio State” can only focus on dogging your own couches and your own players. Let’s be real, even if you get the last PI call, if the game was called right, Oregon wins by 13, had DG saw Ty, Oregon wins by 20. You got out played . I know no one wants to say it, I have no problem calling it like it is. Good for you Dan, good for you Oregon for keeping g it classy. Shame on you espn, abc, nbc, all pod casters and Ohio state fans for making excuses and not acknowledging the truth. That is why Oregon will beat you again in the big 12 championship, and again in the playoffs, if you get there. Go ducks, it’s nice to see the pac 12 finally get the respect it deserves. Sad it took the pac had to die to prove this, but wait, now that our teams are in your leagues, you can’t deny us. The pac will be back, and we will take over the country. Go Oregon, lead the way. Daddy Dan, we got you back!
Go back and watch Oregon's final drive. Then watch Ohio State's final drive. Watch the defensive lines for both teams. What you will see is that Oregon uses some stunts up front, whereas Ohio State used a four man straight rush, without any twists or games up front. The lack of any complexity in the pass rush by the front 4 of Ohio State is hard to understand in modern football. There were a few blitzes by the Ohio State defense late in the Oregon drive, but when there is no complexity from the front 4, those blitzes, by the linebackers and safeties, are easier for the offensive line to read and pick up. Oregon got more pressure on Howard in the final Ohio State drive than did Ohio State on Oregon's final drive, and it's due to the lack of complexity in the pass rush from the front 4.
@@anonymouscustomer4252 From what I understand, Johnson only wants to play a 4 man front. He's stubborn. However, that defense isn't getting it done. I'd try some stunts first, add in some 5 man fronts or a 3-4 defense, and push the issue. Attack the offense, confuse their blocking, get more pressure. Look, I know Johnson brings in 4 star recruits, but honestly I don't care about that. All I care about is getting better results on the field. Better results will bring in recruits.
The way I see it, for what it's worth, is that OSU is just too much of a "by the books" team. They play football the way it's "supposed" to be played (moving the ball with simple forward passes, cover the opponent when they try to pass the ball, punting on 4th down, etc), and not the way it actually is played (via also running the ball, trick plays, flea flickers, hook and ladders, etc). OSU plays too traditionally and bland. Every time I've seen OSU lose (between Michigan thrice, Oregon twice, Georgia and Missou), OSU basically acts like the British ("Bad form! You're not played like a gentleman! A gentleman doesn't LOWER himself to such plays!") while their opponents try every play NOT in the book to win... because they know it flusters OSU and Ryan Day.
I was very critical of Josh Simmons and OSU for having to settle on him last year but what a revelation he has been. Gutted for him. I also think our national title chances took a major, major blow when he went down. I also know Will Howard’s stat line was great tonight but if you watched the game you have to be questioning his abilities to lead a team to a national championship.
You can't talk about officiating and not start with that obscene lack of a review on that Oregon interception on OSU's opening drive. That was absolutely ridiculous -- clearly an interception. Just pure garbage officiating.
Under a minute left with a time out. U rin the ball and move it foward alittle more timeout and attempt to win on field goal. The last drives time management was wild
This doesn’t feel as bad to me as it should. Maybe it’s the 12 team. Maybe it’s the fact not a single team in the country has looked good on the road this year. Maybe it’s the fact autzen is a legit hard road environment. I just feel like this teams going to figure it out. Kyle mccords performance for 3 quarters against notre dame last year scared me more than this game. And that was a win.
I’m with you. Tonight hurts but I still think we can compete with any team in the country. Do we have flaws? Hell yes. Is the track record rough in big games? Hell yes. But let’s beat TTUN, play a killer game in Indy and play better in the playoff and win a Natty. I’m still in

From what I understand, it's not a dead ball foul, which means the clock is not reset after the play. If that's the case, the rule needs to be changed because it allows the defense to stop a play by having extra men on the field, while taking time away from the offense.
The D line is just not good enough. Been the same story since 2019. I don’t care how well Larry can recruit when the production doesn’t show up on the field
Ducks left a lot of points OFF the board. Messed up a PAT, failed a 2pt, missed a field goal, went for it on 4th and goal instead of kicking a field goal.

That was pretty jarring to watch if you're a buckeye fan. As a Michigan fan I always fear the speed and athletic ability of Ohio state, for years. To watch Oregon run past burke like that and just slice through everywhere with speed , it was stunning. Imagine them in Indy indoors, with their spitting WR2 back and their best Dlineman... Michigan fan here ....i was shocked with 2:10 to play OSU didn't call timeout but let the clock run down to the 2 minute stoppage...this would of forced another play by Oregon saving valuable time for the Buckeyes..and they could of used a couple more seconds in the end...not sure Day's thinking there?
Defense was garbage. Totally overrated. Jim Knowles should be fired. No pressure on Dillion Gabriel, let him throw and run all night. Defense had no forced fumbles or interceptions. Lots of big plays given up downfield! It should never come down to bad refereeing or one play. They should have beat them by multiple touchdowns, but D wouldn't let that happen. Buckeyes should get the best Defensive Coordinator in the country, imo Knowles is not. Hopefully this loss will fuel the fire to kick them in the butt to motivate them so much that they go undefeated rest of year and playoffs but that is a big ask if the D keeps playing like it did tonight. Much as I love Ryan Day as a coach, if they don't beat TTUN and win it all with then he needs to go!

This was not a good game if you’re the more talented team! It was a bad poorly played game….get that straight!!! This team will not go without losing again. How disappointing.
The talent gap between Oregon and Ohio St. is negligible, if not dead even. This was a good game between two powerhouse teams battling back and forth all night. Neither team played even an A game, lots of mistakes and errors on both sides. This isn't some huge upset or even a season ending loss for the Buckeyes. Will Howard played his butt off and individually had a really good game. Probably the MVP of Ohio St. that night, for what it's worth. The defense struggled for sure, especially the D line. And simply abandoning the run game was a real head scratcher. I'm not wanting to play Ohio St. again, but we likely will at the B1G championship. It will probably be another epic game too. GG Buckeyes, and GO DUCKS!!!
About our defense. I am dissaponited seeing that it was already crowned the best ever but then again we continuesly crown pieces of our defense as the best ever such as our two DE's. We act like they are the Bossas or Young, or Hubbard. I wish they played like Hubbard did. It isnt their fault, its our fault for thinking they were so elite. They arent.
Thanks man because I'm honestly sick of people talking about jtt and Sawyer as if there young or one of the bosa brothers. There literally A round 3 or 4 type of talent. They literally only get 3 sacks a year lol
Michigan fan here. OSU let that game get away with the poor clock management. The had multiple chances to put that game away. They couldn't get a stop on defense on Oregon's winning drive, they also didn't execute on offense on thier last possesion. Run the damn ball and kick the winning FG. I am a college football junky. I HATE when a team fails to execute at the end of a game. That being stated, the national title is still there for the taking for OSU. With only one difficult game left, PSU. Even if PSU wins, which is unlikely, OSU still gets in the CFP with 2 loses and they have as good a chance as anyone to win the national title. Be happy, my Michigan team is an absolute trainwreck this year. Could you spare a QB?
Did anyone ask Ryan Day Cooper why he did not call time out with 22 seconds left and run 12 secs of the clock or use a timeout with 6 seconds to discuss ball had to go to endzone?. 6 seconds is not enough time to get 15 yards even on a pass. Squarely on Day. Stop bashing Howard people.
With this defense, and now losing Simmon's for the year, difficult to see this team going far. This defense is bad. Can't stop the run. Can't stop the pass. Can't rush the passer. Bad across the board.
Day don’t like to make the tough calls-too soft-until he has to cover his butt. Knowles is His Handpicked guy-he didn’t inherit him from Meyer. And don’t get me started on how he has slowly squandered the program he inherited from Meyer
Birm mentioned not needing the deep ball down field but Im not sure Will Howard has the arm strength for the deep down field pass. Not knocking Will Howard’s overall game, just his deep ball arm strength. It was a super close game, and we lost. Move on and fix the mistakes.
The fact there is so much focus on that last drive is insane. I almost wish this was a two score game like it should have been so we can get down to the nitty gritty.
I can’t express my disappointment properly through a RUclips comment. Denzel Burke…BIA, natty or bust? What an embarrassing performance. While there were some good individual performances on defense, the overall effort was inexcusable. He should be embarrassed and Jermaine Matthews should get a look in the coming weeks. Very few players have taken more career snaps than Will Howard- what was he thinking at the end of the game? A timeout in hand and he scrambles for 5 yards as time expires. You might as well let Sayin learn on the job if Will can’t provide veteran leadership and experience. That’s not what you expect from a 10th year senior Chip Kelly Ryan Day coached QB. This team will be expected to win every game left on the schedule. This season kind of sucks as on OSU fan to be honest. It has been very difficult to get into the first 5 games of the season and then the first time we are challenged, we completely fold. I’ve been more invested in this team than any OSU team before. I completely bought into the hype. But it’s the same old shit. I turned the game off after the kickoff fiasco and rewatched it later. This isn’t fun for me anymore, just stressful and disappointing. I am taking a sabbatical from all things OSU football. I hope the boys can get it together.
Fam this is the most relatable comment I’ve ever seen on RUclips. I put so much hope into this year, really believing we could turn a corner. But at this point I’m not enjoying watching these games. It’s all just so disappointing and frustrating. Sports should be fun but this never feels fun. Will keep watching but I have no expectations until Day gets fired. Let’s just try to enjoy the season at this point but the team is buns 🤷♂️
@@omgitsfridaywe probably have to make our expectations more realistic. Day should never have been made head coach. He might be a nice guy, and he might be a nice assistant coach, but he is taking our program down the tubes compared to what he inherited. Chip Kelly is his mentor, but he still can’t win the big games even with that kind of support.
Day made a mistake hiring Knowles. I wanted Jim Leonhard. I also thought we should've looked at Jesse Minter at Vanderbilt, but OSU never would have given him the job because he had only 1 year as a DC. Day tied his fortune to Jim Knowles and it's biting him big time. If Knowles doesn't turn it around quick, Day will be on the hot seat. If Knowles is canned and Day survives, Day should hire an NFL level DC.
The season is far from over! So we lost by one point! We hung with them all night even after all the mistakes! Watch what happens the rest of the season! I believe in this team. You can quit today😘😘😘
It is always great to hear all of the excuses by everyone. At some point someone in the program is gonna have to do some soul searching. OSU has been soft for years. Basically all of Days tenure. Their tackling is weak. There is nothing tough about them. We can't get to the QB and have been making decent QB's look like top Heisman candidates for years. Larry Johnson has to go. Our Linebackers have been mediocre for years. Clearly James Lauranitis isn't the answer. Jim Knowles defensive scheme is just horrible, but when you give the QB all day to throw, pass coverage will break down. Whenever someone outside of the D-Line rushes, they just get washed out in the line. JT and Jack go right back to being MR and Mrs irrelevant. Chip Kelly's play calling was suspect numerous times. So I guess we are back to bubble screen after bubble screen. Apparently Will Howard can't throw the ball more than 15-20 yards down the field with any sort of assurance or accuracy. What a waste of talent. Ryan Day clearly can't win big games. He keeps getting out coached.
What the hell were you watching? Two first and goal second-half goal line stands to where Oregon had to settle for field goals! The bucks even held them on a 4th and goal! That is physical! Wake up! 😡
Let me see if I got this right ...... the Buckeyes had the ball on Oregon's 28 yard line with 28 seconds left in the game. The next TWO PLAYS WERE PASS PLAYS. WHAT ?????? I am no offensive coordinator BUT ..... don't you just run the ball up the middle until there is 3 seconds left and call your last time out. Kick the field goal .... AND WIN THE GAME !!! What am I missing here Buckeye Nation ????
"What am I missing here?" Hopefully you're being rhetorical and you know the reason: OSU during the Day-era is 1-7 against top 5 teams. They simply can't handle pressure.
I'll take the whole game up till the final drive, literally threw the dub away with poor play calling. 5 pass attempts. Left Judkins & Henderson & Jayden Fielding who's 100% fg this season with 47yd career long, all on the sideline. Like previous possession by ducks, should've been 3 runs and FG to win the game.
Last play, Howard slides and is sitting up with 1 second showing on the clock. And OSU has a timeout on the board that was never used. So much time mismanagement at the end.
Burke got paid. Should of put Mathews in. Burke got torched for like 160 and 2 tubs in the 1st half. No way they should of left him out there on an island. Crazy to think the other team went after our "best" corner 🤔🤷 Ohio State shot themselves in the foot all game Jim Knowles has got to stop coaching like Ryan Day was coaching in big games last 3 years. Too much talent not to help the front 4 get pressure on the qb. BLITZ!!!!!!!! Or use the Jack with CJ or Melton. You can take Hamilton out and put either Saywer, JT or even Curry in the middle with Tyleik Larry Johnson HAS to swallow his pride and stop being stubborn. His defensive line isnt winning 1on1's.. Need to find a way to create pressure on the opposing teams qb. Staying with the normal 4 isnt working Crazy we grabbed Downs from the portal while every other position stays another yr and we looked like that
Ducks top edge rusher didn't play, top receiver was ejected, fumbled snap for missed PAT and a missed FG, Ducks left points on the field. Bucks pass defense was swiss cheese, end of game clock management was questionable, run the ball, call TO and kick the FG.
"I don't think they're going to let this happen again this year?" I thought that's why they all came back. They didn't want to let this happen again...but they did. Until they prove it, I don't think fans can trust that they won't let these big game losses happen.
How many yards did Ohio run in the 2nd half? 34 for a net 19. That was your game right there. The answer was that Oregons run defense destroyed Ohios Run game in the 2nd half. Kudos to the Ducks. Ohio didn’t lose the game, Oregon beat them up front at their own game. Oregon is for real. And….they clearly are getting better. Oregon left 12 points on the field. Oregon knows they are better. They will be.
We beat ourselves. We made a TON of mistakes tonight on the other side of the country against the #3 team in the nation and we lost by 1 point. We will be fine! This is the most confident ive ever felt after a loss, and maybe that's because I haven't been drinking tonight so im not as emotional, but I think this loss could be the best thing to happen to this team this year. Lets get our shit together, lock in, win the rest of our games and revenge this loss in Indy!
We stopped Oregon at 2 big moments in the second half that we shouldn’t take for granted. When we we went up 28-22 and they got the ball back we made the stop on 4th and goal. And at the end when we held them to a FG. Our defense played poorly but they did enough to give our offense the ball to close the game, twice.
Ducks fan here. Both teams very .closely matched. Early season rankings aren’t worth a helluva lot. Bucks didn't drop much in polls. Just gotta be in top 4 to receive first round bye in playoff.

Ohio didn’t lose it, Oregon won it
You made A great point about the dline not stunting more I agree with you bro I think if they change that up it will definitely help us out
These guys reported a few weeks ago that there is internal drama between Knowles and Larry Johnson
S&C continues to be OSU issue that everyone ignores - Oregon was faster/stronger/more aggressive/better conditioned team, period. FACTS
Not really. I suspect this is your favorite comment everywhere
OSU’s 2024 Season got Carted off the field along with OSU’s only legit OT on Roster…
Anyone saying "this game didn't matter" are wrong just for this reason. That was a massive loss.
I immediately said our national title hopes are over when that happened.
Yeah feel terrible for him. And it’s a huge loss for team.
Yup
I was very critical of Josh Simmons and OSU for having to settle on him last year but what a revelation he has been. Gutted for him. I also think our national title chances took a major, major blow when he went down. I also know Will Howard’s stat line was great tonight but if you watched the game you have to be questioning his abilities to lead a team to a national championship.
I can’t even imagine what CB J. Mathews did to bury himself in the OSU Coaches Dog House - Is he still on the team⁉️
DL was what it has been for the last few years.

Larry can retire. Burke should be benched but there is no accountability in this program for upperclassmen
Ryan Day is an Incompetent HC, He failed to argue to Refs to reset play clock to 10 seconds after Oregon Penalty and it stayed at 6 seconds
From what I understand, it's not a dead ball foul, which means the clock is not reset after the play. If that's the case, the rule needs to be changed because it allows the defense to stop a play by having extra men on the field, while taking time away from the offense.
That is the rule dude. Can't complain when you don't know what you're talking about
~ You are clueless about the college football rules. It's not a dead ball foul. You don't reset the clock. That's literally the rules.
Can we honestly say we haven't had a good Defense since 2019. Never should have let Jeff Hafley leave.
We tried to keep. He wanted HC money and BC offered that. These guys are greedy ladder climbers
Jim Knowles should have coached his last game, but that won’t happen.
Yeah, the D couldn't do much of anything. The Quackers o was almost flawless.
The D line is just not good enough. Been the same story since 2019. I don’t care how well Larry can recruit when the production doesn’t show up on the field
NIL buys the players. it is well know Larry johnson does not recruit or change his coaching style for the last 25 years. He is stuck in the 90s
Day is HC. Nothing will be done before it’s either Larry’s job or Day’s
Even if we won that game I don’t know how you can expect to win a natty with a Defense that can’t get to the Qb when it matters most

Their physicality has definitely dwindled little by little under day.
The common denominator in these big game losses is Jim freaking Knowles.
And Ryan Day, don't let the HC off the hook
Denzel Burke is officially Shaun Wade
Larry Johnson needs to go. I'm tired of the DL not impacting the other team's QB.
Agree 100% He is living off generational talent like the Bosas and Young. He has produced nothing in six years.
Defense was not "exposed", they've been this bad all year. You just chose not to see it because of who they played.
A lot of the Buckeye beat criticized the people for pointing these things out. This defense absolutely failed tonight.
Yep. Bunch of awful offenses so far prior to oregon
D line doesn’t have a single real dude. There’s a REAL reason a lot of dudes on the defense came back, and we saw that here
These players are young humans and it bums me out to think Denzel must have had the thought he regrets coming back after this game.
The way to sum it up is, Oregon exposed our lack luster defense yet again.
I’m so tired of losing big games the exact same way every time
To be very clear Oregon left should have had at least 36 points on the board leaving Ohio state forced to get a TD
With this defense, and now losing Simmon's for the year, difficult to see this team going far. This defense is bad. Can't stop the run. Can't stop the pass. Can't rush the passer. Bad across the board.

Day don’t like to make the tough calls-too soft-until he has to cover his butt.

If it were only that simple
The fact there is so much focus on that last drive is insane. I almost wish this was a two score game like it should have been so we can get down to the nitty gritty.
The 12 men on the field penalty was intentional. They traded 5 yards for 4 seconds and it worked.
I agree
It should have been the 15 yd illegal participation penalty called, not the 5 yd penalty for the 12th player trying to leave the field before the snap

Nothing about OSU screams physical
Saying that sawyer was literally mugged over and over. And then saying it doesn’t matter is crazy. Of course it matters. 😂
5 pass attempts when the ball was on Oregon 28.
With 1st down, one time out and 34 seconds on the clock.
Last play, Howard slides and is sitting up with 1 second showing on the clock. And OSU has a timeout on the board that was never used. So much time mismanagement at the end.
The NBC clock was behind the stadium clock, the stadium clock had already expired
You know it's an OSU podcast when the dude is crying only a minute 30 seconds into the video, complaining about the refs and the PI call😂😂
Completely unacceptable in all levels on defense, execution, effort, and playcalling.
Offense was great.
Burke got paid. Should of put Mathews in. Burke got torched for like 160 and 2 tubs in the 1st half. No way they should of left him out there on an island. Crazy to think the other team went after our "best" corner 🤔🤷
Ohio State shot themselves in the foot all game
Jim Knowles has got to stop coaching like Ryan Day was coaching in big games last 3 years. Too much talent not to help the front 4 get pressure on the qb. BLITZ!!!!!!!! Or use the Jack with CJ or Melton. You can take Hamilton out and put either Saywer, JT or even Curry in the middle with Tyleik
Larry Johnson HAS to swallow his pride and stop being stubborn. His defensive line isnt winning 1on1's.. Need to find a way to create pressure on the opposing teams qb. Staying with the normal 4 isnt working

He's just not a great coach. If he can't win it with this team, this schedule, it aint ever happening.
That wasn't the problem it was the pass defense.
@danielforrest6413 yeah, zero pass pressure...
We stopped Oregon at 2 big moments in the second half that we shouldn’t take for granted. When we we went up 28-22 and they got the ball back we made the stop on 4th and goal. And at the end when we held them to a FG. Our defense played poorly but they did enough to give our offense the ball to close the game, twice.
i mean one was after they got within a mere yard of the enzone of the endzone lol. How bout stopping them sooner than that.
Ducks fan here. Both teams very .closely matched. Early season rankings aren’t worth a helluva lot. Bucks didn't drop much in polls. Just gotta be in top 4 to receive first round bye in playoff.
Too bad no one will ask Ryan day or Jim Knowles these questions
The defense stinks. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Caleb Downs transfer after this season
Hold your heads high.. the Buckeyes are here to stay… don’t be disappointed
Tough loss, WE CAN BOUNCE BACK! A lot of people had bad games on defense, but can we stop expecting JT and Sawyer too much to be called great? They disappear to much in games.
