Dang I really digged the backgrounds you made that you ended up removing. Completely understand your point with it not being minimalistic enough though. Sometimes those decisions can be tough, but in the end I think you made the right call which keeps the art style similar to the one it already has!
ok so i just had the biggest relief reading your comment 😅😅 I'm glad you understand where I'm coming from with these changes. I wish my game could suit the aesthetic of the backgrounds I made at the beginning, but like you said, they were just not minimalistic enough :p Thank you for your incredible support! :D
Awesome devlog again! Really enjoying this series. The new backgrounds definitely fit with your minimalist style :) Maybe you could even make the background particles a bit smaller so they’re a bit more subtle, looks great either way though!
Thanks so much, Codeer! I think playing around with the particles would be an excellent idea :) I guess this was more of an experimenting phase, and now I can just tweak the finer details ^^
Awesome Video and Glad that Minima is still going strong! Also, With putting 'Shadow' effects on an object or level us a 'Point' where you image a light source is coming from, and draw the shadows relative to that light source, makes for some really cool designs I've found from doing my own art and drawings. (Also, I love those backgrounds mate, especially the green one)
nicholas nuuuu my mannnn I tried doing some of those shading techniques, but I found it got in the way too much :/ I might add an option to turn on them shadows at some point, tho :)
Your videos and game are getting better and better. Keep it up I really enjoy your devlogs lately :) But I have to say I like the old backgrounds more than the new ones.
The new backgrounds look fantastic! It was a great choice to go with these instead😁 I do think the particles might be a little too big, perhaps. Maybe making them smaller or adding some kind of blur could help. Either way, great job!
Ayyy, always glad to see you drop by these devlog videos! I'm glad you like the new designs, hehe! ^^ Funnily enough, I've already made the particles a little smaller xD They're a bit less intrusive now and I'm thinking it's looking a lot better. Thank you for your super nice comment and support as always! :D
Nice work, I did think the old backgrounds (well the version 1 of this video) worked quite well and felt relaxing, but mate the new ones are perfect! Reallyl like what you've done with them! Excellent work!
Great devlog. I also really struggle with making good art for games, maybe I should also get a little bit more minimalistic. As they always say, less is more! I really like the worlds, especially the cacti in the desert look really cool and make the level more interesting, even though it's just a background :-)
Thanks for checking out the video, Emerald! I always love coming back to minimalistic and simple art - even though it may not be as impressive as other art forms, it’s still really fun to make! ^^
The minimalist style is definitely worth keeping hold of. Given that it's a chill kind of game, what incentive is there to progress? More interesting puzzles or landscapes?
Thank you! I really appreciate that, haha :) I think the main incentive to play more is the sense of completion. There are going to be lots of 'mini-worlds,' and so it won't be a massive effort to commit to completing one, and then maybe another after that, and maybe just ooone more. I think you see where I'm going here :P
I was gonna comment about the new different world backgrounds ,but then a plot twist happened (you got rid of them all T-T) . So, now I'm gonna talk about the simple new version 2.0 backgrounds. The new backgrounds are cool. Although I really liked the detailed ones ,I can understand why you wanted simpler ones as the game is supposed to be chill ,and relaxing. Anyways nice devlog as always Icrocodileso (I think its obvious that I'm running out of nick names.)
Great video as always icosowo! I really like the final backgrounds so keep it up! 😄 Just one thing though, I feel like the red background was a littttttle dark (has sort of a black tint to it) idk if its intentional or if my eyes are broken though 😋
Thank you so much, my devvie boi! Funnily enough, I thought so too xD I think the video render might have done a bit with it, but I went back into unity, and made it a little lighter. Thanks for picking it up, haha! ^^
In my opinion, the new backgrounds look so much better, but I feel as if they are lacking a certain amount of depth as the other backgrounds. Maybe you could somehow add parallax to it.
Yeah, I definitely feel ya. I've been experimenting with breaking up the background into two portions and then adding parallax to that. Trying not to go overboard with the detail, but it's definitely coming together! :)
I really like the art direction you're going, but I think you should change the black parts of the tiles to be much more mild, since the backgrounds are already leaning in that direction. It makes the art from background to foreground feel kinda inconsistent just due to how much the attention is being grabbed to the black here. I should have my eyes on the player, not the lump of black under the floor. TBH, I think a really easy fix would just be to tint the black(and lighten it a bit) depending on the current background. With the orange background, it could be like a burnt umber; for purple, you could have a desaturated grape color, etc.
Oh heyyy, this is actually a big brain move. What you’re saying here makes a lot of sense - thank you for your comment! I’ll do some experimenting soon with those colour changes, and I think that could really bring a lot to it!

:O i love your procedural stuff!! :D
Minima is coming along great! Super excited for the release
Thanku so much, Luak! :D
The first backgrounds where really amazing but I really love the final end result great job
Thank you! I just have to make these tough decisions, I guess 😅
I think the new background looks amazing! Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you so much! Highly appreciated ^^
What can make the background a lot nicer is if the front layer can make it more detailed and the further away the blurrier it gets
Oooh yus, that would be cool! I'll play around with that, thanku!
Great backgrounds! I love how minimalistic they are, they really fit the game.
Thank you so much! Glad you like ‘em ^^

Damn, that background looks smooth af!! Good job icoso, your game already looks awesome!! (^D^)
Thank you for the nice comment! ^^ (~ ̄▽ ̄)~
Gee that Zed guy sure is cool huh?
Thank you, Icoso. Looks amazing! Minima, I mean. Not reIterate(). Well that too. But y'know.
He's just the coolest guy on the block, I tell ya.
No problem at all, mate :) Both of our games are lookin *fabulous*

YES, new Devlog
WOO! :D
I like the old backgrounds MUCH more than the new ones.
Man I really loved the bg's you removed in the end, but the new ones are cool too.
Yeah, me too, but they just weren’t sustainable for a whole game 😓
The art is looking great, keep it up!
Thank you so much!
Let's goo new devlog!!!
yayayya! :D

You say your bad at art and yet your character looks so good...
Hehe :P The square really is beautiful
Awesome as always dude!
Thanks so much, Raindeir! :D
Yay... New devlog

Yeah, I'm sorta bummed that the old styles didn't work out, but I'm looking forward to the possibilities I have with the new ones! :)

WoOOoOo! :D

Looks Great so far!, just I wonder if the player will stay as a square forever or will there ever be a change?
Thanku, Zary! I'm planning to keep the player as a square just to keep everything simple :)
In my opinion, the new backgrounds look so much better, but I feel as if they are lacking a certain amount of depth as the other backgrounds. Maybe you could somehow add parallax to it.

Looks marvellous so far. I hope it will be free though
Very gaming 😎
You bet 😎
it's about minimalistic driving power
that's right 😎
Just make the shadows a setting for the player, whether it be a Boolean or more of a slider
Oooh yeah, that could be pretty easy to do! :)
Mmm great
:D
Great Video! But tbh when the background got a revamp, the character and platforms look off... Good luck!
Thank you for your response! It’ll definitely take a little bit to adjust to these new backgrounds 😅
Great job so far! I’d suggest toning down the particles on the player a bit, they might be distracting to the player.
Thanks so much! Will do :)

Ayo which one's for the McDonalds world
right on my bday!!
Ayyy, happy birthday, my dude! :)
Could you make a tutorial on how you make those backgrounds?
For sure, yeah!
The backgrounds are awesome 😎 , but do lower the blur intensity a bit.
Cheers! I will do a bit of experimenting with that, thanks!
Yeah, this looks very cool. I have an idea, about making a game in excel using formulas. Let me know if interested and I will spare you the details.
here from dc :))
Ayy, thanku! ^^
