Swam in a triathlon staged in an inner harbor that was fed by a polluted river after a heavy rain. A good number of the triathletes did get sick after. I lucked out.
Ugg. Glad you were ok. I feel like these organizers really need to be careful about testing water quality. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
This is THE most important question and it was left unanswered in this video. The video was so so but how was this important information left out. I'll talk to the editors.
Now, that video is a departure from your typical sports tech gear. Very refreshing...and no not because I took a dip in the Seine river.....Great video....👍
Thank you!!! I did put a good bit of extra time into this one but it seems to be struggling for views. Still it was super fun to make and very different. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand You may have picked the best time to drop this video, just before the Olympics. Your views should increase once the swimming competition begins.
Great video Matt - and the best explanation I've heard of what's actually going on there. Personally, I think the water test results will magically make the numbers just before race day - could be a PR disaster for Paris if they didn't.
Oh, I've been wondering the same thing. I'd like to know more about who is doing the water testing and where their funding is coming from. I've seen paid 'independent' consulting firms with very non-independent results before. It's almost as disgusting as the water quality of the Seine. 🤢
I read somewhere there's the also the option of switching the marathon swim to the rowing lake outside Paris. Obviously wouldn't work for triathlon at short notice but find it incredible to think no one thought there was a need for an alt venue, even if it was never needed, why not at least plan a cycle and run course based out of or around the rowing centre. A duathlon just isn't an acceptable outcome for the greatest prize in sport.
100% agree with you. A duathlon would be such a disappointment. I’m watching either way but still. 🤷🏻♂️ Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Love it. Live right in 7th arrondissement in front of The Louvre. Event was almost cancelled but finally happened. Curious if you managed de get any water quality data reported during the event itself? Merci monsieur 😂
Oh that would be super interesting. I do worry that these paid third party testers might “conveniently” report perfect numbers during the Olympics. I’ll dig around a little bit.
Me too. I am hopeful that everything will be perfectly fine. I just wouldn’t bet the house on it. I’d have a backup plan and location ready to go. But I’m not planning the Olympics. 😆
100% needs to be the new name for the tri and marathon olympic swimming events. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Cancelling the swim for the triathlon and making it a Duathlon would be completely unacceptable, it would be like taking the hurdles out of the 400m hurdles event and telling the athletes to run the 400m flat race instead. It isn’t at all the same and totally different athletes would win. A backup plan should have been made - I hope they can swim!
I've got to imagine that both the urban sewage and street rain water are at a high level right now. I'm seeing rain in the men's time trial for cycling. I wonder if they'll move triathlon to a later date. But 100% agree that canceling the swim of the triathlon would be horrible. 🤦♂️
I know, its all about the tech. Wich I love. But I like that you focus on tri. Not many, do that consistently. All fans of the sport will appreciate this clarity on the subject. Without just regurgitating what has been going around for months now. We could do with more channels reviewing tri stuff like bikes shoes suits etc.
I’m not sure if any of the open water events have prelims. That’s actually a good question. But I doubt many athletes are going to hesitate to race in the water regardless of water conditions. Thanks Matt.
Yeah, I'm not sure what to think. This one was a big effort. I'm not quitting reviews. I have a lot of interesting stuff coming up. 🤷♂️ Thanks for checking this one out!
Maybe the Olympic committee needs to consider some sort of drug regime for the swimmers to disinfect or counteract any kind of GI infection. Unhealthy water exists in swimming pools too - so they are commonly dosed with chlorine.
I’ve been using the 965, Epix and Enduro 2 a lot. It’s kind of tricky because I’m literally always testing watches. For others, I think it’ll come down to what needs they have and what budget they’re ok with spending.
They’ve actually scheduled the option for the marathon swim to be at a different location now. So that’s something. As for the triathlon, I guess they’d switch it down to a duathlon. 😬 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
How was it expectable for literal shit to go straight into the river at any point past 60s is insane. But those Europeans are just more civilized I guess.
It was both interesting and bizarre learning about all of the history of the Seine river. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

I’ve heard about this so much but not seen any of the data. Thanks for sharing. Fingers crossed this works out!
Thanks for watching this one Brent! I have a feeling that it'll all work out. Although, if it were me, I'd have a backup plan. 🤷♂️
The question is does poop water increase buoyancy?
If some of them get enough floating poopies stuck on them we might get to see some new world records.
This is THE most important question and it was left unanswered in this video. The video was so so but how was this important information left out. I'll talk to the editors.
countries should not be allowed to host the Olympics if they cannot provide safe venues for these incredibly talented athletes. Shame on France
I wonder if the water quality values will ‘magically’ become perfect right before people race. These testing companies are exactly independent. 😬

Only if we read the history of The Seine River…….🤢🤮
🤢 - Olympians will not be allowed to know the history of the river before their competitions. Wikipedia is off limits!
Well…they happened today. Alot of athletes threw up immediately after finishing.
I hope they are all ok
Yikes! I did enjoy watching the guys race. I still need to watch the women’s race. Don’t tell me what happened! 😆

@@benbos1925 - I haven't seen a good channel that covers tri bikes. Not that that would be easy. Maybe GTN? 🤷♂
I’d swim for the Olympics regardless of the e.coli levels. Only thing more complicated is the time delay (to get sick) between prelims and finals.
I’m not sure if any of the open water events have prelims. That’s actually a good question. But I doubt many athletes are going to hesitate to race in the water regardless of water conditions. Thanks Matt.
@@mlegrand they don’t have preliminary on Open water events. Only 24 people per gender.

3:00 missed opportunity, should've said "focus from species to feces"
😆 - 100% - Next time.
Interesting. I wonder if some countries might refuse to participate if the quality is still bad.
That sounds possible. I also wonder if the "independent" water testers will suddenly start reporting perfect numbers right before the games. 🤔
@@mlegrand Or maybe Paris will have a "no flush" day. 😆

For the marathon swimming events they've an alternative with the basin of Vaires sur Marnes wich will be used for rowing
Awesome! I had a feeling they’d find some sort of alternative option. Thanks for posting this!
