That was so amazing. I was on the edge of my seat watching til you got him free. A family of these owl set up house in my backyard a few week ago (papa, mama, and two babies). They are so amazing to watch and to listen to. Kudos to you for helping that little guy!!
You should search for "owl huffs" and "owl defenseless" (both without the quotes) to find two interesting vids depicting raptor rescues. You did a good deed; it was likely only a matter of time before the owl panicked and tore its own wing off or a land predator spotted the "tasty morsel" and ate it. Be sure to upload any other interesting raptor vids.
I see. Most raptor rehabilitators restrain a bird's feet to make it calm down (holding both in one hand just above its talons is usually enough to render one mostly harmless). If you brought it to a real rehabilitation centre, I'm sure they would be able to tell you whether or not its wing was broken or fractured. It's just a bird, and probably not smart enough to know that struggling would hurt it even more. What's really funny is how it seems to be angry at you for helping it.
That would have been good; but no we didn't. We were in the middle of a wilderness area far away from any rehab centers. A couple of nights later I heard a barred owl hoot near our camp; hopefully the same one.
I think the owl was confused. They are normall scared of us, and after the rescue, the owl was probably like "I guess I shouldn't be so scared after all!" Nice job Cabbithunt!!!
That's interesting; I didn't know grabbing the feet could calm it down. Yeah; it could have had a broken or fractured wing. We were in a wilderness area accessible only by portaging canoes and equipment; rehab wasn't really an option. I do hope it wasn't injured but I don't know. It was a wild owl; naturally it thought we were going to cause it harm instead of help it. I don't think it was mad; probably just scared for its life and considered us a threat rather than a friend.
Thank you for all of the nice comments. Just wanted to let everyone know that this video will be on Animal Planet this coming Sunday (July 20, 2008) at 9 pm on a show called Untamed and Uncut.
The nylon bag was breathable enough / had enough air so that we could cover the head without suffocating it. (A plastic bag might have suffocated it). Once it couldn't see what was happening, it calmed right down and no longer presented a real threat.

Nice video, thanks to all for helping him
God bless you all for helping it!
How did you protect yourself from the owl's beak while still allowing it to breathe? It's difficult to tell from the video angle.
Did u take it to a rehab. center?
