I'm 62 years old and I enjoy this song very much. I remember very well what it was like being a High School student, and creating our own definition of what was cool. Don't worry about ageing, your friends are going to be there too.
Laurence Hawks im jealous, shit was easier to get away with
Laurence Hawks WONDERFUL N PERCEPTUVE.. IM 61 N THINK THIS MUSIC ACHIEVEMENT IS STAGGERING

My dad's in the military, so unfortunately No, however pretty much everyone hates me.
Sounds like bs to me. Most of my old friends are heroin addicts and could give a shit less about me lol the rest are cokeheads
A song about the late '70s that strongly brings up feelings of '90s nostalgia for me. Love it.
its 90 kids was born in 1979
Its about people born in 1979 not the 70s
ITS AN ERA THAT WE LOST 70'S 80'S THE 90'S WERE THE YEARS MAN IF YOU GREW UP IN THOSE TIMES YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.THINGS STARTED TO CHANGE IN 2000 AND REALLY WENT DOWN HILL AFTER 911.... THIS SONG MAKES ME THINK OF ALL THE TIMES WITH MY BUDDY'S... HOT SOMMERS' FIRST TIME OUT DRIVING.. GIRLFRIENDS PARTY'S, FIGHTS... ALL THE UPS AND DOWNS BUT IT ALWAYS WORKED OUT WITH NO LOSS.... NOW ITS JUST GONE... I WISH MY KIDS COULD SEE HOW GOOD A TIME WAS IN THIS WORLD... EMBRACE BROTHA WE ALL COME FROM THE SAME STONE.
@@rotarylabs9728 Dude don't just diss the 2000s like that. The 2000s were a decade as legendary as the 90s to grow up in. We had Halo 2 and 3 for fucks sake. Now the 2010s is when it started fucking up.
Honestly now that I think about it the 2000s, especially the early 2000s, was kind of an extension of the 90s. A lot of the culture carried over into the 21st century quite well while also evolving all of it into it's own identity.
@@genericwhitekidthesecond4330 Indeed. And 9/11 was one turning point that changed the world for worse.
This song feels so nostalgic, makes me think of sitting on the edge of a bridge with a friend, smoking cigarettes and drinking some shitty alcohol, talking about nothing in particular, just looking at the water.
I've never done that, but that's the scenario that pops in my head any time I listen to this.
I have and to this song my friends and I did exactly that
Neither have I. But I’ve felt the same whenever I listen to music from this era
😂😆
Makes me think of the good ole days, joints in the woods with dead friends, where did the time ever go
@@usednapkin245 that’s what I’m saying I miss my old friends tbh we were a special kind of a group that I don’t think I could ever replace always dearest to my heart and I’m happy I lived through it
this song sounds exactly how the 90s should feel
For real...
fuck yeah bro class of '97 right here. born '79
Well said Lou!! 👍
More like 1979

The nostalgia hurts my chest so much. XD Gosh, can't listen to this song without my breathes being short, haha.
good description of a song the touches you.
bondoly66 Thanks. ^^" And yeah, it really does touch me emotionally.
I know this comment is old, but man, you described that well. Every time I hear a nostalgic song it makes my chest swell with emotions. I miss the days I’d go driving with my mom while she played this song..
Me too. It brings this huge lump to my throat everytime. These are some powerful lyrics.
A classic for all generations
1996 Sitting in front of the post office on a warm day waiting in a dated 76 silver Impala black vinyl top with my young teen boys in the car. "1979" comes on the stereo radio, windows down, music blasting, guy on a motorcycle behind me turns his engine off to listen , car in front guy starts nodding his head to the beat, a moment groovin with complete strangers a smile of connection and satisfaction to a great tune ..hit the replay "Classic" one of the greats...
How'd you manage to "hit replay" on the radio back in 1996?
Wouldn't it be great if life were like that?
@@AsifKhan-ju4ld asshole lmao.
@LadyStonecut i appreciate ur story/comment 🤘
The older impalas looked amazing back then , now their disgusting coupes
Does this song make anyone else feel sad? idk why it does me
same
samantha hoffman Same here. I first heard this song from the movie "Clerks 2", in that particular scene where Dante found out he got his manager pregnant, which is played by Rosario Dawson ( i can't remember the character name she's playing). I couldn't help but to feel bad for Dante, it was like his life was over.
samantha hoffman your depressed
ITS BECOUSE YOU KNOW THAT IT WAS A GREAT TIME THAT IS SO FAR FROM HERE....SORRY SAM..
It has a mournful dark tone to it.
I still smoked bud when this dropped. My brother and l would lay on the carpet of his room when ld visit the folks back in the bay...and l swear l still feel the white stained plush rug under me and smell the acrid scent of old pizza and socks! Haha...l got STUCK on this tune, set on repeat, smoking and listening and talking about everything but nothing in particular. Those were the moments Matt. l love you brother!
You should write books. You had me intrigued.
I'm a kid of the 90's .. and I feel extremely nostalgic. 1979 will always be one of my favorite songs¡

1979 is my birth year so this song is sentimental to me...I think I was like 16 when it came out? That was an awesome year too!
I think this song represents the turning of an age. how old times made the transition to the 80s and kind of the first modern decade. Thus the name 1979.
+Auguste Nelson yeah kind of strange...
Quite possible
Yeah like how cars made a HUGE improvement in the exact year 1980.
Auguste Nelson listen closely to the lyrics, and you'll hear his description the "urgency of now" or the need for enlightenment but he sees no one around. This song came deep from the soul of the artist!
Auguste Nelson I think it's a freaking brilliant song about Youth. Restless, Invincable (we don't care where are bones will rest, etc) And how we become disillusioned with age.
And can't get it back.
Or with drugs "morphine city" would disillusion anyone. I think it's nothing to do with 1979. Just life. Kids I knew listening to it weren't born in 1979, & wouldn't even resonate with anyone today if 1979 were literal.
It's probably another analogy of growing up, changing, the 70's were so different than the 80's....being young is so different than when you're older....even with disillusioned youth.
This song clearly and poetically represents the energy and melancholy of being young in suburban America.
Song sounds so melancholy, I love it. Don't know why the year 1979 is so talked about in music. I can only find stuff about so many trainwrecks that year.
It's because the 1980s marked a changing of the times.
Atleast I would think that that's why...
LuchaKing don’t you mean, MellonCollie? *Lenny Face*
1979 was the last year before every genre of music was invaded by this stupid new genre called "Pop"
i think he was 12 in 1979... songs about losing touch with childhood
I'm not even that old but i wish i was a kid back when i didn't have to worry about anything. Its funny because maybe after 10 years pass i'll be wanting to go back to the present as well
This is my favorite Pumpkins song, heard it a million times but never really knew all the lyrics. Thanks so much for posting this.
Like motion pictures when you pull slowest motion at the most inconvenient time.

If you are here to bless your ears in quarantine, you sure have a great music taste, I'm proud of you
It's..."I know you better than YOU fake it"..
& "down the seam" after that
I'm glad you made this video with the lyrics because I've been singing the wrong words for the last 20 years or so. For example: Jukebox kicking like a stone 😂😆
That little mumble between the verse just sounds so satisfying i think thats why i like the song mainly
I thought it always said 'umm right now'.anybody else?
This song was nostalgic to me before I ever knew what nostalgic meant
Everytime I hear this song I think of all my former friends and Lost friends. I miss them, and I hope they are doing well.
Bought this cd at HMV Gatwick Airport back in the 90's after my flight home was delayed by a birdstrike as the plane taxied up to the gantry Still play it now in 2019, this track and By Starlight are still up there in my favourites listIt still feels like there's been something lost along the way when I listen to it, being 61 really sucks at times, but on a cool night when I'm out on my Triumph heading for the coast the years slip away briefly
This song was everywhere in the early to mid 00s.
This song will be just as great 100yrs from now as it is today. Timeless!
Thank you kind sir for the knowledge and appreciation of this timeless piece of art
This song makes me feel happy and sad and when I hear it a feel like having a fun late night with family and then having a bond fire and like I'm in the 90's .just me ?
1979 l was 17 and in my last year of High School this song takes me right back there for some reason, the clip could of easily been me and my friends at the time. Good memories.
It was our class song. ❤️

I can’t get over how amazing I feel listening to this tune. This reminds me of being with friends 20 years ago on Bournemouth beach enjoying uni parties. It’s sad that time goes and the nostalgia you get makes you realise that you don’t even know the people anymore who you enjoyed these amazing moments with. Just embrace the good times!
Is it wrong that i feel... Sad , happy, nostalgic... down... Blue ... Depressed .. when i listen to this beautiful song
This not just a song
This is history
Brazilian that love this sound
God bless the Smashing pumpkins
This song holds so much significance to me, as seeing it performed live was perhaps one of the most magical moments of my life, I remember it so vividly. It was the most alive the crowd was the entire show, I was jumping up and down with a drunk lady and staring into the eyes of the guy I’d stood next to, half flirting with the entire show. His smile was so huge. This song possesses some serious magic is what I’m saying- I truly felt cool hanging out with random strangers hearing it live :).
This song from the 70 and 90 bring me jolly and love it
Dang it’s sad that the past is gone and all we is the memories
For its time, this song must have hit the music world as something entirely different, out of the ordinary, just like "The Big Hurt" did in late 1959.
This brings me back to 1993, 94... 🥰😍 starting high-school and first bf. His name was fabian.. so wverytime I heard this song I could fadely hear his name 😔😪 r.i.p. Fabian
The 90s was a glorious time to be 25. I have no complaints only fond memories
Wasn't it? We hung out, talked, watched MTV and nobody had their faces stuck in their smart phones! The music was still good. I don't know what happened, why is my hair gray?

Green Day: Comment
I love Green Day
what are they saying in the background?
Does anyone know what that refrain is that opens the song before he sings "Shakedown 1979?" I"m haunted by that little passage and want to know those lyrics so badly. Thanks!
My son was born in 1979 and I believe I was tripping nothing to do with the song except the year.... Just to let you know my son is grown... He blended right in with society.... And I'm still tripping.... And slipped through society... I blame it on my neighbors...
This taught me nostalgia way before I had anything to be nostalgic for
1979---
I wasn't even thought of. My parents had just gotten together. I was born 25 years later, their third child. Idk where I'm going with this lol.
I love this song
I wish I was born in the 70s but I had to be born 2005:(
alright, this is the best version out there
I didn’t really get or appreciate this song as a teenager. I just thought I was cool because I listened to the smashing pumpkins lol. I’m 32 now and the lyrics has a whole new meaning for me. Enjoy your youth kids and try not to rush through it. It is gone in a flash.

This song is a perfect memory song.Makes me look back at old memories and how I've grown and how my friends grown too
My dad was born in 1979 and he loves this song
No one cares of you individuality
I always laughed in high school when people listened to the Pumpkins and wanted Billy to be this great icon. I'd suggest his lyrics have a whole different meaning than the persona MTV and radio were trying to build him to be.
As someone who's main era was the 2000s (late specifically but I still have fond memories of the early 2000s) and I gotta say the 90s definitely beats 2000s music. Linkin Park, Eminem I love you but this shit bops.
My dad who was born in the 1970s showed me rhis song and all these older people having story's with this song makes me want to make newer stories to make sure the stories never stop maybe one day I can reply with a story of my own

This song alway puts me in a good mood.
Get this. I remember first hearing this song on a night when I visited my old high school for the first time in six years. Driving away with a friend later I was thinking nostalgically about how the school hadn't changed, but all the faces had (this song playing on the radio). That was February of 1996, lol! Mercy.
I don't even know what it was like in 1979, but this song still could make me cry

"The song's lyrics are about the transition out of youth into the adulthood. Corgan was 12 years old in 1979, and considers it to be the year that he transitioned into adolescence. The year 1979 was also chosen for the title because it rhymed with a lot of words that he initially wanted to include in the lyrics. He continues on to say, it emotionally connotes a feeling of waiting for something to happen, and not being quite there yet, but it's just around the corner." I was born in 1960 and I don't think it matters what year you were born and which era you grew up, we all shared that same feeling during that transition of our youth. The world was our oyster and this song perfectly describes our young lives as we slowly opened that oyster. Not knowing what to expect, but going full blast into the unknown. That attitude and those feelings are universal. And it only happens once in a lifetime and without our even being aware of it, a time that would hold the best memories we ever made OR will make in our lives. They absolutely nailed that youthful human condition!
"We were sure we would never see an end to it all." FUCK. Life has got to be the most sickening ripoff ever.
Damn I miss the 90s

Well, I was a 1979 graduate. So, no need to explain.
So underrated , love this song. My mum played me their songs when she was drunk, and it was like nothing I’ve ever felt to listen to this style or music, when all my life I’ve listened to shit music I never even liked. It was an awakening to my senses, my style of music.
As a 14 year old I can successfully say that my generations music is trash
Educate yourself on the entire Beatles catalog. That will be a brilliant musical education for you, beginning with "Till There Was You" and the old Hamburg 1950's rock tracks up to the "Let It Be" album in 1970.
