Love that slide down to G#1 at the bottom of his modal range, and of course that delicious drop from the C2 down to subharmonic F1. He's /so/ damn good.
The F1 in the end was done with so called subharmonic singing, which means that he sang an F2 which he modified so that the first subharmonic is heard. The second subharmonic would be another fifth lower and so on, much like the overtone series. Bass2Yang has a video on his channel where he compares the sound qualities of chest, Fry, chest Fry, and subharmonic singing on the same note. Subharmonics gives the warmest and richest sound. Subharmonics have become Geoff's trademark while Tim Foust typically uses growl down there. There is a nice video, Just Sing, on Voiceplay's channel where they switch techniques. If you want to hear an a capella bass who does virtually everything in chest, you should look for Elliott Robinson, one of the former Home Free basses.
Avi just uses chest and occasionally growl which I believe Tim taught him so he could do some special effects for Pentatonix' performance of Natural Disaster with his voice. Geoff has a tutorial on the subharmonic technique that he uses on his channel. What all of the basses say though is don't lose your high notes and they recommend practicing those as well as going low.
@@gailseatonhumbert9199 I had thought back and forth about their comments on the high notes and how that brought them the low notes automatically. I think, the explanation is basically what Gary Catona writes in Voice Building. If you strengthen the muscles in the vocal cords, I think they are called TA muscles, you not only get better control, but also increase their mass. Now thicker strings vibrate at lower frequencies when the tension stays the same. And as Gary Catona writes, when I started with his exercises, my speaking voice started to drop by about a half step.

A very nice tribute to Thurl Ravenscroft - another low bass famous singer who sang “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch” - and the original voice of Tony the Tiger. VoicePlay are very much singers that voice act (based on what they do with their voices not necessarily the profession of the latter) and I love it. Also I hope you're having a good time here, especially with all the rain, yes I'm a local.
You might like Johan Karlstrom who sings for the Danish National Symphony Orchestra that has a version of “Misty Mountains”! I believe Johan’ s voice is generally LOWER than Tim or Geoff! His voice is so rich and low at the same time, awesome! I go back to this recording just to hear his voice again. I think this recording starts lower than other versions done! He is an actor as well! He was AGENT 47 in HITMAN 2! I hope you love this as much as I do.

Now that is where I used to sing! Not the higher notes he used though, or at least only in falsetto. As a fellow basso profundo, I'm sure that must've all been his head voice. My bottom notes have risen with age and abuse though, so I can only get down to around B1 now, and that is unsteady. I never actually checked or recorded my bottom note when I was still singing regularly, but the BBC engineer who mic'ed me up (they had us each sing through our range from end to end before selecting mics) had to get a mic normally used for percussion and said it wasn't audible for most ears, from which I can make an estimation. I've been told that the normal range of hearing is generally reckoned to be 20Hz - 20kHz (I've also come across studies giving 35Hz-19kHz) which on normal A4=440Hz tuning would have meant I was singing down to below E0/20.6 Hz (or C#1/34.65Hz on those other studies) I know audio engineers work on 20-20k as a base assumption, as it is what is quoted for HiFi equipment. I know it was damaging to plastered walls, as I had to get a plasterer friend to first repair, then teach me to repair, the damage (landlords take a dim view). His control is incredible though. I wish we'd had pieces like this or Sixteen Tons in our repertoire when I was singing chorally, as I was certainly the only one in the choir who could have hit those solos, and I would have had justification for practising down in that range, whatever the damage to walls (more likely they'd have found me a practice room without vulnerable decor). I'd be willing to bet he can get down into the infrasound range if only there was a way to record it.
I would love to hear him do a voice over of the animated version of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. It would be very hard to beat the original, who was Boris Karloff but it would be great to hear Geoff Castellucci do it.
Gets the feeling that studios are missing a bet by not having Geoff doing voice work for some animated characters! What expression and drama he could bring to them!
His voice truly is amazing. Like, I am excited and filled with... more than a bit of dread when I see that he's put out a new video. My reaction to seeing him post Country Roads was basically "Aww, come on Geoff, that's not fair..." One video of his that I... haven't worked up the courage to listen to all the way through is his reading of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. The whole story. Start to finish. No joke. It's like an hour-long video. As for whether the heads were singing in chest voice or head voice... they don't really _have_ chests, so it would have to be head voice, yeah? 💀💀💀 Ba-dum-tish ;) Anyway, I've got to put in my usual request for Jonathan Young's Sound of Silence. I really want to see your take on that cover. I mean, Jonathan is no Geoff, but he's a pretty powerful singer in his own right (with so many good covers and originals under his belt), and I badly want to see you watch his cover of that song, since you've done Disturbed and Pentatonix.
That’s how my voice sounds all the time. Every time I call my wife at work it’s always the same thing, “there’s a guy with a really deep voice on the phone”

the Geoff Gang ! hearing a classic Geoff jam ....can you be in your chest voice if you are only a head ? as a high school freshman with a uncharacteristically low voice i auditioned and won a seat in my school's Symphonic Choir...later made all state Madrigal....typical bass note in choral music is the occasional C2....few can hit it so those that can must cough up a cord to balance the choir..... now (at 70) i can hit the A1 occasionally ....if your piano is tuned right :-)....( singing along with Geoff or Tim) never lower

Okay you got me with the tuning cat the first time it came up!!! I was laughing so hard!!
VoicePlay are very much singers that voice act (based on what they do with their voices not necessarily the profession of the latter) and I love it. Also I hope you're having a good time here, especially with all the rain, yes I'm a local.

@@maggiereneemusic Currently watching it.
You NEED to hear his version of Misty Mountains Cold!
Hey, just seen his video myself, and I love it! I'd suggest you check out Ivan Rebroff singing "I'm Tiefen Keller". There's an F1 in that too.

Love listening to Tim, Avi, and Geoff, but I think Geoff has the best quality bass voice of the 3. Tim has the lowest subharmonic, and Avi has the most soothing voice.

LOL love your edits!
Hope you see this. Geoff finally gave you your wish! Check out his latest video, "Way Down" in which he in fact does hit the C1!
Love your faces reacting!!
I would love to hear him do a voice over of the animated version of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. It would be very hard to beat the original, who was Boris Karloff but it would be great to hear Geoff Castellucci do it.
Thank you for your comment. Did you like the new reaction to Geoff Castellucci I just posted?
I went down to our local Tuning Cat Store... They we all out ! I got so mad, I had to go to therapy.😜
Gets the feeling that studios are missing a bet by not having Geoff doing voice work for some animated characters! What expression and drama he could bring to them!

@@maggiereneemusic I totally enjoyed that reaction, yes! Already provided a thumbs-up "like" on it! *smiles*
😍
I would enjoy talking to him all day
His voice truly is amazing. 💀💀💀 Ba-dum-tish ;)
Anyway, I've got to put in my usual request for Jonathan Young's Sound of Silence. I really want to see your take on that cover. I mean, Jonathan is no Geoff, but he's a pretty powerful singer in his own right (with so many good covers and originals under his belt), and I badly want to see you watch his cover of that song, since you've done Disturbed and Pentatonix.
Glad you liked it!! Thank you for your suggestion. Hope to see you tomorrow for Nightwish Premiere? 💀😊💖
@@maggiereneemusic Unfortunately, your premieres are right at the same time as my daily team meetings for work! T_T
Gotcha
As a bass/baritone
I absolutely love Geoff Castellucci voice
I can't even sing that low
I love your reactions ❤
😊 Hope to see you TONIGHT at my LIVE stream?
Misty mountains, that’s his best to date!
As I've heard, "Voiceplay, The Theater Kids of A cappella"!!!
That’s how my voice sounds all the time. Every time I call my wife at work it’s always the same thing, “there’s a guy with a really deep voice on the phone”
Maggie, you need to check out Voiceplay's version of Grim Grinning Ghosts. There are two versions on their channel, one studio and one live.
Thank you for your comment. Hope to see you at the Premiere this morning of a new video and then here www.twitch.tv/MaggieReneeMusic later today for fun LIVE reactions? 😊
Voiceplay - If I Were a Rich Man/Girl. Only few days old. Get yours while it's hot.

Every time I hear this narrating Geoff reminds me of Lorne Greene (Bonanza actor and bass singer doing great ballad covers).

"the heads are using headvoice"! :D
the Geoff Gang ! hearing a classic Geoff jam ....can you be in your chest voice if you are only a head ? as a high school freshman with a uncharacteristically low voice i auditioned and won a seat in my school's Symphonic Choir...later made all state Madrigal....typical bass note in choral music is the occasional C2....few can hit it so those that can must cough up a cord to balance the choir..... now (at 70) i can hit the A1 occasionally ....if your piano is tuned right :-)....( singing along with Geoff or Tim) never lower
Thank you for your comment. Hope to see at my new Nightwish reaction video premiere tomorrow?
i was humming with him while sitting on the couch with my sister and she didn't know my voice could go so low.
legend states that geoff can go so low that it can crumble mountains
I forgot how much I enjoyed your reactions! I just subscribed to you, so I don't miss them again! At least the ones I care the most about, Geoff / VoicePlay and Home Free / Austin. Yep, I'm an acapella fan!
I love Geoff's voice so much! As a patron, I'm in their chats (well, I listen and type, of course), and he talks like a normal guy, kinda a low voice, but normal. He's really funny!
Please react to VoicePlay's "If I were a Rich Man / Girl", "Phantom of the Opera" and "Butter" . Also Geoff's "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold". All awesome!
Great reaction, lots of fun to watch! Thanks!
