I'm not english either, but the difference between Onion and Garlic is usually quite basic.
Garlic is what you sometimes use in butter and on baguette combined with herbs. It's part of mythology as something offering protection from vampires.
It's called "Knoblauch" in german, "aglio" in italian, "ajo" in spanish.
As for onions, there are red onions, white onions, yellow onions - they are used for example in french cuisine in a soup with cheese, they are similar to shallots, recipies often start with chopping onions (which make your eyes water when you chop them, garlic doesn't) and frying them in oil.
