The Brexit election explained: where do we go from here?

  • 'Let the healing begin' Boris Johnson declared today, in a victory speech on the steps of Number 10 aimed at bringing a fractured country back together. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
    He insisted the focus would be on the NHS.
    But his landslide victory puts Brexit right back on the immediate agenda - the Withdrawal Bill likely to go before MPs next week.
    And it will put Scottish independence front and centre too - thanks to a resurgent SNP.
    As for Labour - with their worst result since the thirties, the political recriminations begin - and the search for a new leader.

Nearly all of the parties including Labour kept blocking it and insulted us by calling us thick and misinformed, aided and abetted by our own main stream media and the judiciary. I was expecting the referendum to be overturned. Now, finally, it’s happening due to this general election. So there’s some very hot blooded celebration going on in the country right now!

Now they're at it protesting that Boris is "not my Prime Minister!" I didn't vote Conservative but the Conservatives won the election so I hope they come good on their pledges to get Brexit done and invest in the NHS. They would love to see Boris fail just so that they can say "I told you so! @intempify The thing is I don't need the media to explain to me what happened. I have drawn my own conclusion. We had a referendum and one side won by a narrow margin, but nonetheless won. The majority of parliament opposed the result and for the three years following parliament obstructed the implementation of the referendum. This crippled the government to the extent that it was not functioning. We had an election an one party said we will finish the process so we can move on and the other parties continued to oppose or not take a firm position. The voters know we have to move on from the referendum and of course the majority of them were in favour of implementing the result so they choose to remove the opposition. Essentially the parties that lost have only themselves to blame for biting the hand that feeds them.

      There were 73 episodes in the Game of Thrones.
      Back during season 1, Game of Thrones cost about $6 million per episode to produce. In season 2, that number was closer to $7 million, with “Blackwater” - the show’s first big action set piece episode - getting produced for $8 million. By the time we got to season 6, HBO was shilling out an average of $10 million per episode. As the show’s fan base has grown, so has its budget. Though a $10 million price tag for a TV show may sound excessive, it’s not unprecedented: The final season of Friends reportedly cost $10 million per episode (including the $1 million paid every episode to each of the six cast members).
      However, Friends was averaging an incredible 25 million viewers per episode.
      Whereas, Game of Thrones was averaging about; 6.4 million views per episode.

      @ Gar Sm. The only single-issue vote we’ve had in recent years was the 2016 referendum which produced a clear majority in favour of Leave. Despite that, we’ve had 3 years of Remainers claiming the result had to be ignored and rerun to get a Remain majority. We also had to listen to hypocrites claiming that Parliament , which was out of touch with public opinion, was supreme and should override the referendum result. Now you tell us that a Parliamentary majority is irrelevant. Your side have lost on all fronts and you’ll just have to swallow it.

    2. This "Brexit" throws Northern Ireland irrevocably in the arms of the Republic of Ireland ( finally!) and consequently in the arms of the E.U. paving ipsus facto the unification of the Irish Island.
    3. The real winner in this election was Scotland and its movement for independence that will culminate with its ratification.

    The turnout was 67.3%, some 32,026,221 actually voted.
    13,966,451 people voted for the Tory party.
    18,029,770 people did not vote for the Tory party.
    Far more British voters (millions of people) didn’t vote for the Tory party than did vote for it. However, despite this...the Tories now hold a large majority in Parliament. This is not democracy, not by any sense of the word. A FPTP system simply cannot deliver true democracy.
    Only “proportional representation” (PR) can produce a result which reflects a true democratic vote and one that includes a fair and balanced representation of all stakeholder citizens that took part.

      No inclusion, no balance, no fair representation.
      It simply creates an “us versus them” situation....as has clearly been the case since 2016, and psycho-socially will remain so.

  • @sabaxalnur

    Why Labour party has failled??
    Because there was NO clear and explicit standpoint.
    The labour party did Not say neither it is against the Brexit nor it supports, so it ends up in no man's position!! there are were very people who were between leave and remain.
    Remember, 48% of the population has voted for remain. There two major voters,remain and leave. The labour party failled to take the vote of 48% remain voters.
    There were actually small party thas has clearly used the word "stop berexit" but this party was very small and could not win for the ellection that is why people did not vote for it.
    In the same situation the Brexit party did get any thing why because it could not get the majority to win.
    The two major parties were conservatives and labour.

      McQuade 1 Maybe they changed their mind, maybe they didn’t. It is the view of the Prime Minister that they did not. Surely you realise that you cannot have a new referendum every time it is possible that people have changed their mind? A country can’t leave and rejoin the UK once per year. At the time of the referendum they wanted to remain in the UK, in a generation they can be asked again.
      This is the conventional approach to independence referenda, and as it happens, it seems to be the approach favoured by the PM and the strong ruling Unionist party.

    • @eddevlin72
      @eddevlin72 4 года назад +4

      Sam Ludendorff Well they clearly changed their mind because snp won practically every seat in Scotland. So it isn’t really up to the tories whether Scotland should be allowed to decide their future because they lost heavily (in Scotland)

    • @bnap3221
      @bnap3221 4 года назад

      Ed Devlin It is up to the ruling conservative and unionist party, it is perfectly clear. Moreover, Boris has already been in contact with the Scottish first minister and informed her that the referendum independence will be respected and the SNP will not get another one. Accept it.
