The irony here is that Joe's ideas end up being really good as shown in Season 3. Mutiny would have done much better having implemented them.
No I don't think Joe was too harsh, but what's not obvious is why his discount is feasible. Does it makes sense ?

i don’t think i could ever hate joe he’s just to interesting of a character
it is because the writers were genius, and the actor was so good at being bad
