Not trying to be a dick here but that's partly true and the whole album was recorded (including this song) but his then recorded company only liked a couple of the tracks from it which did not include this one. He then recorded a few more songs but they were still not happy, so he asked to have his contract cancelled and be released and bought the rights to the album to take with him to a new record company.
4:50 "I wish that I had this in me." Exactly. This song represents what 99.99% of us don't or don't bother to do. What I like best is that he does it with a smile.
I would love to see you react to "I wanna talk about me!" BTW: A little trivia: "How Do You Like Me Now" has a double meaning. It was the first song off an album with a new label where he had had more control. Record execa told him he'd never last doing this kind of music because he'd turn off female listeners and guys follow ladies to concerts. They were wrong! Women love Toby's music because a lot of it is what WE think giys think! So "How Do You Like Me Now" was also a question to fans on the new sound...different from "Blue Moon" and "Shoulda Been A Cowboy".
Last I checked "revenge" songs required someone being done wrong first? She didn't cheat on him she just didn't wanna date him, SOMETHING SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO DO. He asked her out, she said no, and his response to "get her attention" was to write her number on the 50yrd line saying Call for a Good Time? If anyone deserves revenge it's her.
Has anyone else ever noticed the guitar notes sound like they're saying "nanny nanny boo boo" towards the end of the song? You can hear it clearly around 6:35 in this video.
Yup, I so wanted him to notice it but he was talking over it, not his fault, but it’s great!! How many times would we love to do that to someone in our lives?!?
@@XanderHarris1023 I think they meant he had progressed too far in his style to fit into their country music label. Edit: Or maybe even into country music. Country music didn't used to sound like this.
This song is one of a handful that got me into country music 21 years ago. It IS the ultimate flex song. Whether you ever pull that move on anyone or not, most of us have someone or someone's we'd love to flex on and that makes this song incredibly relatable. Also the music is just awesome. Loved this reaction Billy and i'm happy you're living your dream man.
This song can apply to many different people from your past, not just someone who rejected you romantically. You have to admit, it’s a great vindication song/video. 🤣. RIP Toby💖 You were the best!!!
I love this song! It’s like saying no matter if you’re a boy or girl, if you reject the one who professes their love for you, don’t be surprised if they get famous and rub that right in your face!!! LOL
Hilarious he's doing good now just looking at him like what the hell😅😆🤣😁💛🧡👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤟 every time I see it I just like this video more more thank you for sharing
I remember when Toby was on a talk show and a fan asked him to play this song for a girl who snubbed him before he scored the winning point in the big game and then tried coming onto him lol
This is my favorite song of his. I love how the music at the end is taunting, like "nanny nanny boo boo". Another song in a similar vein that you might like is "You Broke Up with Me," by Walker Hayes. Even though the lyrics are addressed to a woman who broke up with him and wants to get back together, he said he actually wrote it in response to the people who abandoned him while he was starting out but then tried to come back into his life after his career started taking off.
I carry this in a heavy heart, his passing, he will be missed. I respected his music and his messages, I do love his work, and he will be missed. Toby Keith will be missed he is one of the greatest and he is even in the hall of fame. So, I raise my glass to you in heaven Toby.
I'm a HUGE Toby Keith fan! My husband even took me to Moore, Oklahoma to see the town where he's ACTUALLY from!! I LOVE TOBY KEITH!! I've seen him in concert more time than I've seen my family who lives eight hours away!! My husband doesn't mind either! He gets blessed trust me ❤😂

My Toby Keith story. I was a casino dealer and he was having a show where I worked. After the show, he comes into higher limits room and sat at my table. I was like that table(not mine) is reserved for you and he said "Well I got good feeling about you, I'll play here if you don't mind" When I tell you we had a ball on my game that night, it's an understatement! He really didn't believe I was a fan and asked to sing my favorite song of his. Of course I started singing this and he along with the others with him sang with me!! He was a great guy and we talked and joke like old friends. As he was leaving, he left a nice tip and sang little less talk! He made my night! To think, I wasn't even gonna go to work that night!!
He's from my hometown. Moore oklahoma. He went to moore highschool and they renamed the street infront of the school "Toby Keith ave" also one of our water towers says "home of Toby keith" lol we are proud of him.
This is the song that made me fall in love with country music 😍 When I was little we recorded this on VHS from CMT and I burned that tape OUT!!!! First song I ever sang that wasn't Disney 😂 Love Toby Keith!!!
We have to remind the newer generations how we used to wake up to a radio alarm. That was huge from 70's for 30+ years until smartphones gradually eased that out. But, his line is so clever: "The alarm clock starts ringing, who could that be singing? It's me, Baby, with your wake-up call."
He’s not being a “Petty Betty” IMO. Keith discussed the inspiration for the song on his website in 2000. "Initially, I said, 'Here's my title: "You Never Loved Me Before, So How Do You Like Me Now?” It's one of my catch-phrases. A lot of people become successful after they've been told they won't ever be, so people can relate to this. It can be about an old flame or a boss or a teacher -whatever it means to each individual. It was a fun song to write.”
This is the ultimate burn! I like this song because this happens to so many teenagers. When you go back to your reunion, things are really different. I am thinking this is something he or one of his friends went through & he sang it in a song. The offenders know who he is singing about!
I do not think "flexing" is petty when the person who dissed you in the first place did it so hard and hurtful that they had the flex coming to them. I am the oldest of five kids who grew up dirt poor in the south, and we were told regularly that we would grow up to be nothing but the dirt under our feet by the people around us. We all finished school, and we are all doing well. My youngest brother had a "how do you like me now" moment when he saw an old school mate in Las Vegas. Rip Toby. You are loved and cared about and you will be missed.
I am watching this after Toby passed away he was such a a pioneer and if you love country music and your country you was a fan of his
Toby got released from his label and wrote this song as his FU for not believing in him

Amen to that!
@@dole8001 most musicians don't own their own song rights. That's why certain songs end up on crappy comercials
Him calling her there to flex is why it's a beautiful song
The younger version is played by his son. I think a lot of us would love to thumb our noses at those who said we'd never accomplish anything.
Are we going to ignore the fact that at 4:29 he drank from a RED SOLO CUP. Toby Keith fans will get this
TOBY KEITH IS A LEGEND thats why he got the country music icon award 2 days ago and battling stomach cancer hes a badass🎉

similar to Taylor Swift's "Mean".
Female singers have been making "revenge" songs for as long as I can remember. Equality is a double-edged sword lol
Taylor Swift comes to mind first.
Great point

Yeah....the first time the song came out lol. It was intentional
This song was written to trash his original label that released him because his music was..."to progressive ". How Do you like me now!!!

What's funny is that "Skater Boy" is like the answer to this 🤣
Close! Toby wrote this after his record label released him and brushed him off soo he was literally like "How do you like me now?"
